Jason Mackey's Pirates chat: 07.21.21

What are your thoughts on Manfred's comments last week on Bob Nutting?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I asked him the question. I thought he could have expounded more. I wish he would have. He seemed in a hurry to be done with the press conference, which was unfortunate because I think that answer matters a lot to an entire fan base. So, I guess I could say I thought it was a little disappointing.

Are we really looking at the possibility of a Newman and Erik Gonzalez/Difo up the middle after July 31?
Jason Mackey
1:00
Castro could play. Strange-Gordon. I think they're options, yes. Unless, of course, they trade for Fernando Tatis Jr.

Hi Jason….I knows it’s been a bit of a secret who the Pirates minority owners have been in recent years. Do you happen to have any updated info on that question mark???
Jason Mackey
1:00
I don't, I'm sorry.
Gus
1:00
Late to the chat, so not sure if you’ve answered this or not. But is there any chance Polanco could be unloaded at the deadline? If so would the pirates have to eat some of his salary?
Jason Mackey
1:00
They would have to eat a lot, and yes, I think there's a chance. I think that's why they've been adherent to playing him as much as they have.

Hi Jason. Thanks so much for the chats. I always learn something. All the trade rumors about Frazier seems to be because he won’t be around when this “rebuild” starts to bring players up. Not sure I agree with that, but if it holds true, why aren’t players like Moran, Newman etc. also in the same conversation?
Jason Mackey
1:02
Well, because their contract statuses are different, one. Less team control. Two, Newman isn't tradable. Moran could be, but not now that he's been hurt so much. Newman will be arb eligible for the first time this offseason. Moran went through it for the first time. Frazier has one more cycle. So, they're in different places.

Jason, will BC bench Nogo during Sept call ups if he’s still mashing? Will Nogo concede 1B if Moran reinstated? Anyone other than Moran to try out at 1B after minor leagues conclude? Thanks
Jason Mackey
1:04
Well, one, BC doesn't make the lineup. Two, it's a long, long time until September. Three, no. Because it's Nogowski's career, and BC is respectful of that, as he should be. And four, again, we still have time. Could move, they could platoon. And likely not. Martin is their best available, but his jump should be to AAA.
Gus

We know the expected names to be shopped. Frazier, RichRod, Anderson. But could there be any sleepers? Newman, Moran (although I don’t know if u can trade injures guys) Kuhl perhaps?
Jason Mackey
1:04
Not Newman or Moran. Doubt it on Kuhl. Maybe a Difo or Stratton? Again, huge sleepers. But you never know.

What are the chances Lonnie White goes and plays football
Jason Mackey
1:05
I think he signs. At least on what I've heard this morning.
Gus
1:05
We’ve seen the dbacks take two so far. And with the unloading of Frazier and a few others likely, do you think the pirates give the dbacks a run for their money with that first pick?
Jason Mackey
1:05
Yeah, I think they could challenge for it in the second half. Absolutely. I think you're gonna see a dropoff after the trade deadline.
PT1000
1:05
Chances Polanco is resigned
Jason Mackey
1:05
Zero point zero. Also, he is signed. What we're talking about is picking up an option vs. his buyout.
John
1:07
How is available slot money for each team calculated? The Bucs had the most slot $ available but not sure how that was determined. What then would next year’s draft money possibly be? Thanks.
Jason Mackey
1:08
That number is based on previous year's draft position, ### of picks and amount spent the year before. More than that, I'm sorry. I don't know off-hand.
Gus
1:08
Could Tucker be any worse than Newman is right now?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Yes. And he has been. His offense has been worse. Will say this, at least Newman has fielded well.
Joel
1:08
My daily check of the minor league box scores is more boring without Oneil Cruz and Roasny Contreras. Any news on when they will be back?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Tomczyk talks in about 90 minutes, so I'm hoping we learn more then.

The draft is over, the trade deadline almost here.  Besides some young talent to be brought up to the major league level what else should Pirate fans do to keep it interesting for the rest of the season?  Thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:10
All kinds of stuff. The minor leagues. Who does what with MLB opportunities. Can Nogowski keep it up? What happens with Polanco? Who gets healthy? Hayes and Reynolds are fun to watch. Brault coming back. Have liked what Kuhl has done. When does Moran return? Do they give Alford a shot? Is the bullpen going to improve? Do they bring Keller back? How does he fare?
Carl in Carrick
1:10
Always enjoy the chats Jason.  Do you consider Stallings untradeable until Davis is ready to assume the catching duties?  Thank you.
Jason Mackey
1:10
Hey Carl. Yeah, I don't think they have any interest in trading him. He has too much value for them.
Gus
1:10
In your opinion, what number makes sense for a Reynolds extension? Both for the team and for the player
Jason Mackey
1:11
I'm never good at predicting these things, Gus. I would say buying out his arb and a couple free agent years. Would think in the $5-$8 million a year range. But again, those are very loose figures.
Rick
1:11
We’ve seen Key striking out a bit more and having some ugly at-bats as of late. Is that just the league punching back or reason for concern?
Jason Mackey
1:13
Agree anecdotally, but he's hitting .286 in July. Hasn't been hugely different. Strikeout rate (26%) a little high, and I'm sure there's been some league pushback. But I can't say it's anything I'm overly worried about.
PT1000
1:13
Are there any financial ramifications for DFA’ing Polanco
Jason Mackey
1:13
None, other than the fact that they're not gonna save any money by doing it.
Andrew
1:14
since Reynolds is here to stay what can you see the Pirates giving him in terms of a contract extension? And what do u think the lineup will look like in 2022?
Jason Mackey
1:16
I was speculating $5-$8 million with two FA years bought out, but again, very, very rough. Hard to say, honestly. Maybe ... Swaggerty, Hayes, Reynolds, Moran, Castro, RF (Nogo?), Stallings, Newman?
PrinceBob
1:16
Ditto on John Wehner as color man.
Jason Mackey
1:16
He's excellent. And an awesome person as well.
