No. He's also not the first person in the history of the sport to try and play through something.
Arnold

Jason, would OC not benefit by hitting the weight room? The Strawberry comparisons are silly when you look at the physical conditioning, no?
Jason Mackey
1:07
If you stood next to Oneil Cruz, you wouldn't say he needs to hit the weight room. Also, of all the things we could say to criticize Cruz, we're focusing on strength? Geez oh man. That's about the last thing I'd question with him.

Take on the Gallo contract to get a prospect as well?
Jason Mackey
1:07
No thank you.
Joel

Small sample size, but Marcano has an OPS over .900 at Indy. Especially now with Bae injured (what is it with injuries in this system?), why not cut VanMeter and plug Marcano into second base on a regular basis, spotting Newman against the occasional lefty.
Jason Mackey
1:07
Probably what you're gonna see in the second half. My prediction would be minus Newman.

Does it look as bleak for 2023 as it does now? We have some 'interesting' players', but none of them look to be impact pitchers/batters. How much longer can we take this? Pls talk me off the ledge
Jason Mackey

I feel like I do that for a living. My God. They need pitching. The bulk of their pitching is at Class AA. Or at least the first crop of better pitching. That group should be in Class AAA next year and hopefully creep up to the big leagues. Their pitching is universally acknowledged by Baseball America, MLB Pipeline and others as being good. They won't all suck. But they can't instantly mature.

Hello Jason.  The Pirates have drafted a number of middle infielders including the most recent draft. Out of all them, I’m wondering who you think will be the starting shortstop and second baseman when the team is projected to be contenders in the next few years.  Enjoy your chats!  Thank you.
Jason Mackey
1:09
That's five years away, Lucas. I don't have that kind of crystal ball. I wish I did. I really like the Termarr Johnson pick. I also like Oneil Cruz and Nick Gonzales. Liover Peguero, too. But they can't start four people in two spots.

Obviously Quintana wants to pitch tonight, but do you think the team finalizes a deal before he has the chance to?
Jason Mackey
1:09
Nah, I think he's gonna pitch and they take their chances with it.
Austin
1:09
Do you see any potential of the pirates adding prospects to a deal to sweeten their return or are we still a year or so away from that?
Jason Mackey
1:09
I think we're at least a year away from that.
Jaden
1:09
do you think bednar will be traded for prospects?
Jason Mackey
1:10
I do not.

I know Contreras is being managed in regard to innings, but when can we expect to see him making starts in Pittsburgh again?
Jason Mackey
1:10
I think you're looking at roughly two more weeks before he's back.
Mark

It’s been a tough year for Pirate prospects having down or injury-filled season. Have you heard any concerns (Pirates Brass) on the struggles these prospects are having?
Jason Mackey
1:11
Nah. Although they probably wouldn't publicly voice concern because they don't publicly voice concern about anything and they're not going to start by bagging on a young kid who has struggled. It's human nature. They're going to wonder what's up with Fraizer, Triolo, Gonzales, Burrows, etc. But saying that crap to me, not sure what good that does them.
Justin
1:11
Even if Yoshi hits 6 HR this weekend, it's really hard to see a good smart team thinking he's suddenly good.  At this point, what could they possibly be thinking having him on their roster?  Is it simply to show future FAs that the team follows through on playing time promises and is patient?  It's bizarre.
Jason Mackey
1:11
I agree with you.
Jeff
1:11
I read where scoreboard in left will be replaced. Looking at it the last game I went to, it does seem dull and not sharp picture. Around the league, are most more sharp and clear?
Jason Mackey
1:12
Hahahaha. Compared to the rest of the league, what the Pirates have is akin to about a 13-inch tube TV when other stadiums are rolling out 4K screens. It ain't close.
Mark
1:12
Follow-up to my previous question.  Those prospects having good years any news on them moving up a level?
Jason Mackey
1:12
Not yet. And as always, when there's news, we will report it on our website. But nothing until post-deadline, most likely.
Alfred

Which players not currently on the active roster would you guess will be on August 3rd or shortly after?
Jason Mackey
1:13
I'm looking for Suwinski to come back (tho maybe not right away), Swaggerty, maybe Bolton, Alldred ... Ro about two weeks like I said. Those are the ones top of mind.
Steve
1:13
Hi Jason. Am not seeing any lineup presented that gives the Bucs a chance to dig out of a hole or hit a guy or 2 on base home. Do you see a positive progression on this front with guys coming up in the next year or 2? Thanks Jason.
Jason Mackey
1:14
I'm not sure what you're asking, Steve. "2 on base home?" Seems like you're saying their lineup is too thin, which is a perfectly fair criticism. They need to develop more young hitters. There's more starting in Double-A, but obviously that's not now.
Jeff
1:14
Hindsight, but looking at Anderson now, maybe Cherington should have received way better than what Bins has shown. Do you think he can get better than that trade?
Jason Mackey
1:15
You take a chance. They're not all going to work out. Yeah, would be great to get more. But they're called lottery tickets for a reason. Think about other teams' top-30 lists. Do all of those guys pan out? Of course not.
K Hayes
1:15
What do I reach first? 100 singles or 100 strikeouts
Jason Mackey
1:15
100 singles.
1:16
OK, maybe strikeouts now that I take a closer look at numbers. Sorry, Key.
Smokey

Jason, how can anyone that watches baseball not see that the abysmal calling of balls and strikes affects games greatly. In short, me thinks the MLB umps stink. Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:17
I don't disagree with you. I don't even blame the umpires. So many guys throwing hard, with so much spin and such, it's not their fault. It's a really hard thing to do.
Victor

Is there any chance Derek Shelton is not the manager of the 2023 pirates? With Don Kelly being a highly sought after Managerial candidate likely to get a job this offseason I think you have to at least consider the possibility right? And at the very least I’d think Andy Haines HAS to go.
Jason Mackey
1:18
I think Shelton is back next year, first. Also would not shock me if someone hires Don Kelly. And, no. I don't think they get rid of Haines. People are easy to blame the hitting coach, but I think they're actually done things better this year. Certainly have found more power. At some point you just need better players before always blaming the coaches.
