Is my contract or Patrick Corbin’s the worst in MLB?
Jason Mackey
1:18
Yours.
Jerry

Jason, I assume you will be celebrating what would have been my 80th with some fine tunes and good thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:18
I celebrate every day with your fine music and good thoughts, Mr. Garcia.

At what point do we get extremely worried about Mason Martin struggling in AAA? He seemed like a likeable option to replace Yoshi and become that power hitter for the Pirates that they never really have had in the past, but has struggled mightily in June and July.
Jason Mackey
1:19
Yeah, now. I mean, I would love to see Mason up here, but he doesn't deserve it. He's such a great kid and works his tail off. But the production hasn't been there. I worry about the strikeouts. They haven't been fixed. Not saying he'll never figure it out, but it's not a current succession plan at 1B.

Do you think Kevin Newman is on the team in a week? He's actually been a useful player, particularly vs lefties.   Maybe a competitive team has a lefty 2b/SS who can't hit lefties could use him?
Jason Mackey
1:19
I don't, Justin. I think someone gives the Pirates something for him.

Do you think Keller finally figured it out
Jason Mackey
1:20
I do. To quote my college pitching coach, I'm buying what he's selling. I like the sinker. I like his attitude and confidence. This is a very repeatable version of Mitch Keller.

Speaking of coaching….. hitting coach has done what? It probably is what he has to work with, but nothing seems better with anyone at bat.
Jason Mackey
1:21
The pitchforks are out. They've hit more home runs, one. They're also developed a team-wide approach, which they didn't have enough of before, based on pitch-selection and patience. Again, you need more players.

Do you think that Quintana's comments are more about standard veteran professionalism, or does he really like the situation here? It seems to me that the time for constant churn-and-burn talent acquisition has to end at some point, and Quintana likely doesn't garner an everyday player who can step right in and contribute. Why accept that it's fated for him to be traded? Nutting isn't going to pay 100 million+ to get Musgrove or someone this offseason, but Quintana's not really that old, and even paying him the raise that Tyler Anderson got over three guaranteed years seems to fit in with what's "affordable" for the Pirates. Say 3 years, 30 million, with a few incentives. He's built for PNC Park, seems to be enjoying himself, and would stabilize the rotation going forward. Why not keep him instead of try to find another veteran prove it contact this winter, and then trade that player for a mediocre return, with optimism no longer aimed at 2024 but 2025, and so on, and so on.
Jason Mackey
1:22
I think it's a little of both. He really has loved it here. At the same time, he's human. Why would he tether himself to a rebuilding organization when he doesn't have to? And because of how well he has pitched, he has more options for himself. Sure, the Pirates could not trade him and gamble that he would re-sign, but they're also not stupid -- contrary to popular opinion.

Jason, is this sustainable now that I’ve found this new pitch?
Jason Mackey
1:22
I think so.

Jason, i know that after Johnson, the Pirates have 3 remaining unsigned dps, Do you believe they will sign and how big is it for the Pirates to have signed all their dps the last two years?
Jason Mackey
1:23
Don't think they got everyone last year, Maz. But, yeah, it's important. More importantly, they got the higher ones, the ones that really mattered. They've done a great job in the draft, no doubt.

I've seen enough of Greg Allen. When Reynolds comes off the paternity list, I think they should give him the boot instead of Madris.
Jason Mackey
1:23
You gotta give him more runway than this, but yeah, hasn't been great.

Jason, Do you believe the Pirates are content with Davis as their catcher of the future, but with his lack of strong defense, do you see the Pirates trading for a top catching prospect?
Jason Mackey
1:24
I think they consider Davis that. So, no, don't think that's something they're going to target.
Justin

If you're the GM and Nutting told you you could get payroll up to a still-paltry 100 million next year (payroll currently projects in the ~50 range), how would you spend the extra 50?  Proven mashing 1b like Bell/Abreu?  Good pitcher(s)?
Jason Mackey
1:25
I'd buy pitching first and foremost. A lot of it. And anything left over, yeah, I would spend it on first base. Maybe those guys, maybe others. Not sure. But I'd go there and also sign a veteran catcher with some semblance of two-way production. That would cost some money.

Hearing the same names coming up.  Any noise about Allen, Peters, or Brubaker?
Jason Mackey
1:25
Can't imagine who would trade for Allen. Have not heard anything on Peters. Don't think they're particularly interested in moving Bru at this point. Friendly contract situation, and he has really grown up a lot this year.

Assuming Oneil Cruz stays at short, which I don’t think is a crazy idea, who is the second baseman of the future? Peguero, Gonzalez, or other?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Yeah, we don't know. Could be Marcano, Bae, the guys you mentioned, who knows. A lot to play out. My prediction would be Gonzales or Peguero. But we shall see. Sample size isn't large enough.

Jason, Appreciate your efforts. Enjoying the chat today. Especially appreciate your honestly on Van Meter and Yoshi and checking to see what is up with Diego Castillo. Your honest attitude is refreshing!
Jason Mackey

Thanks Terry. Glad you're enjoying everything.

I believe the Pirates need to show and prove accountability and meritocracy starting after the deadline.  Stop playing players who are not performing. Shuffle players back and forth as needed to obtain based on productivity. Management must make this plain and clear to players.  Do you agree or disagree?
Jason Mackey
1:27
I mostly agree, Mark. You need to be careful, though, because you need to give young players a chance. For example, if they bring up Swaggerty, you need to see what he can do. Not send him out after 5 games if he doesn't hit. That's not a legit sample in baseball. It's a fine line.

Jason, against my better judgement, I’ve been watching some MLB games. It’s time. Screw the human element. These humans cannot call balls and strikes. Admit it.
Jason Mackey

I would rather see robo umps, yes.

Are there any minor leaguers that we haven't really heard of who are on the rise? I'm thinking along the lines of what Matt Frazier showed last year.
Jason Mackey
1:28
Yeah, assuming Matt Gorski or Blake Sabol aren't deep enough cuts? Bubba Chandler? I don't know where your line is with that stuff. Kyle Nicolas?
Ethan

Spotrac--for some reason--does have him included for some reason, but it's not correct. Kind of inexplicable, in my opinion...
Jason Mackey

Guessing this is the Vasquez question?
