Do you think the Pirates will use their Rule 5 selection? If so any names out there that interest you?
Jason Mackey
1:13
I do. It's a way to cheaply address some stuff. But I'm sorry. As I said earlier, I haven't had a chance to dig too deep into the market.
Justin

Obviously spring training will change things but here in mid-November, who do you think takes the 2b job and runs with it?  I guess Triolo would be my current pick but obviously Bae, Gonzales, Peguero, and probably more guys could be options
Jason Mackey
1:16
I'd probably go Peguero at this point. I like Triolo as a super utility guy or their first baseman. I like Peguero's athleticism, power, speed and attitude. I think he could really add something there. That said, it wouldn't shock me if it winded up being Triolo. But I see more value for him in a Kris Bryant type of role.

I know we expect them to be more competitive next year, but with so many teams looking for starting pitching that can’t help the Pirates out. What makes the Pirates more attractive other than the fact they they can guarantee people starting rotation spot? If they get further into the offseason and aren’t able to land many targets do you think they save money and go big next year?
Jason Mackey
1:16
No, I think they know they need to win baseball games. They'll sign some starting pitching.
Adam
1:17
I just wanna see a playoff baseball game in person again man. When am I gonna be able to see that?
Jason Mackey
1:17
I'm with you. It'll be Feb. 24 in Fort Myers for me.
Seth
1:17
What are the odds that Oviedo doesn't need tj?
Jason Mackey
1:17
It's a legitimate concern. Not sure I can give you odds. But when these situations happen, very rarely is TJ avoided.
Seth
1:17
When will the pirates bring cutch back?
Jason Mackey
1:17
I would expect some time in December. But I still believe it will happen.

Thanks for doing this Jason! Who do you think will be the highest regarded free agent(s) the pirates will seriously be in the conversation for? Hoskins, maybe the pitching tier of Stroman, Lugo, Giolito? It seems we’ve made a jump in the caliber of free agents we sign every year and signing someone from that tier would be really reassuring.
Jason Mackey
1:20
Giolito makes sense for them. I think they'll be in the conversation for Hoskins, but I don't think it'll make sense. I think he gets more than the Pirates really want (or need) to pay elsewhere.

Do you think that a RH CF who can compliment Suwinski could be an underdiscussed target they may have?
Jason Mackey
1:20
No, I don
1:21
don't. Suwinski is gonna play every day. And should. He needs to learn how to hit lefties and started doing better with it once they gave him some runway.
Brad
1:21
Jason, just wanted to let you know Connor Joe is still pre arbitration, so he can't be non-tendered.
Jason Mackey
1:21
He's Super-2.

Are there any trade candidates on the team other than the glut of middle infielders? I can’t imagine Bednar gets moved at least not until the trade deadline where you wouldn’t his value would be higher
Jason Mackey
1:22
Yeah, I struggle with this. Not Bednar. They need their bullpen to be very good. I can't see how they trade any pitching. Maybe some OF depth like CSN or Matt Gorski?

I regards to an earlier question, if I remember correctly, while behind the camera aspects changed for Padres and DBacks broadcasts through MLB, on air basically stayed the same.

What is your favorite soup?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Tremendous. Love it. Lobster bisque or french onion. Next!

Have you had a chance to talk to Cherington about his time teaching a graduate level sports management course at Columbia? If so, what was his biggest takeaway from his time there?
Jason Mackey
1:24
I have not, no.
Justin
1:24
Who is one available guy you look at and think "man, he would make sense for the Pirates"?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Shohei Ohtani.

Hey Jason, Could we see the Pirates potentially having an $85 million dollar payroll to start the year?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Yeah, I could see that. I think it would upset some people, but I think it's realistic.
Canyon
1:24
Who do you think could win a good glove next season (other than Hayes again)
Jason Mackey
1:25
Hmm ... Triolo would be my next nomination. Either as a utility guy or if he winds up setting down roots at first base.
Paul
1:25
Since the Pirates don't know how to utilize Davis's talents why don't they just trade him for an established first or second baseman. Your thoughts.
Jason Mackey
1:25
Absolutely not. You wanna trade a 1-1 pick after 62 MLB games? Come on.
Dan
1:25
Really impressed by Triolo at the end of the year .,. Is he a legitimate candidate at second base next year ?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Yes. Or to bounce around at multiple spots.

Who figures it out first...Pickett or Davis?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I'll go with a tie. :-)

Jason, my favorite Dead song is "US Blues". Yours? "Been hidin' out in a Pirate chatroom ..."            With apologies to Robert Hunter. ;)
