I completely agree. I think they have a move there remaining. And a not subtle one. Scotty Miller is fine for depth, but he's not a WR2. They'll get there. May take a little time.

What was the reaction when the Pirates drafted Henry Davis?  It seems preposterous to me that the guy can't hit and doesn't have a position in the field.  Did the Pirates absolutely screw him up in development or was it an egregious pick from the start?
Jason Mackey
12:34
We don't know. Sample size is too small and disjointed. Remember last year, he was being shoehorned into RF. This year, he's having to become the primary catcher. Not making excuses for the young man. He hasn't been good enough. Just saying that there have been other things going on. ... He needs to go to Indy and reset. Hey, maybe they screwed up his development or made a terrible pick. But I'd argue that we don't know that yet at this point.

Are you going to grow a mustache? I can give you some pointers

Ha. I think I'll pass. Nobody needs to see that.

What's your take on the litigation, I think it's litigation, to create separate state high school championships for public and private schools? When I was in a Catholic High School we had our own organization, the PCIAA, which staged its own championships. The reason we were given for the separation was that the talent pool was smaller because only Catholics went to Catholic schools (we actually had one Baptist when I was a senior) and therefore would have trouble competing against the public schools. Now the complaint is reversed and private schools supposedly can fish in the bigger talent pool. But I have to think that's only an issue for schools in bigger cities. I don't see how Catholic schools in Ebensburg or St. Mary are fishing in a large talent pool no matter how wide an area they draw students from. I also don't really care which way this shakes out but it's funny to me to think Pennsylvania high school sports could be where they were when I was in school but for the exact opposite reason.

I lived in D.C. for 3 1/2 years out of college, and I think it's one of the best things about that area: the WCAC. They had the private schools that could recruit lumped together: DeMatha, Paul VI, Good Counsel, etc. I'm not sure why that doesn't happen more other places. Then you have a cool test when you have, like, DeMatha against the DCIAA champ or staged public/private battles. But the kids shouldn't be competing for the same trophies.

good afternoon Jason what do you think about the way Oneil Is having so far he has been looking good also what do you think the moves will be for Paul and Gonzalez i Think Nicolas and Williams get sent down
Jason Mackey
12:37
Good afternoon, Ryan. I don't think they're sending Nicolas down. He has been excellent. They really like him. I think it probably makes more sense to send Priester down, because you can. They could also DFA Roansy. As much as I like him and he teased earlier in his career, pretty sure that's a lost cause in terms of a prospect at this point.

Skenes, Gonzales...who's next up, and when does he arrive?
Jason Mackey
12:38
I'd imagine they want to get Bae back up here at some point. Don't know when, but their 2B has been meh. They could also work him into the outfield mix. Don't know if they would cut bait so soon with Rowdy at first, but Jake Lamb has at least put himself in position, should this start continue.
PrinceBob
12:38
I imagine the idea that Skenes won't be a Pirate after three years is a reference to becoming arbitration eligible and the Pirates not wanting to pay what he'd be awarded at a hearing. I don't necessarily buy that but I'd bet that's the idea.
Jason Mackey
12:39
I don't know. But he's gonna be here. The idea that he won't be is silliness.

Jason, so I'm watching ESPN ATH yesterday, and they start talking about The Mustache Man's mechanics and how they could lead to elbow issues.  And they were comparing his mechanics to Appels.  It's the first I ever heard this, and a quick web search revealed not much else on this matter.  Hear anything on your end?
Jason Mackey
12:41
Um, no. Have not heard that one. I'll be honest, I haven't heard a ton of concern about Paul's mechanics.
PrinceBob
12:41
Speaking of pitchers, does the fact that one of the women claiming Trevor Bauer assaulted her being charged with trying to defraud him do anything to make some team more likely to sign him?
Jason Mackey
12:41
My take: I don't think it's the charges/outside issues are the biggest part of Bauer being unsigned. They're obviously something, but I think teams are worried that he's a pain in the you-know-what and not worth the trouble.

12:41
Jason, so I'm hearing some are questioning my defensive prowess.  What are your thoughts about my ability to hold down second defensively if I hit?
Jason Mackey
12:42
Not worried at all about your defense, Nick. Strike out less and drive the ball. That'll help you stick.

Does it really matter who’s coaching the Penguins power play? These guys are going to ad lib however they want anyway. No fear of any repercussions. I just think they’re too infatuated with the style they believe will be successful, even though it needs a facelift.
Jason Mackey
12:43
Nail on the head right here. It certainly wasn't Todd Reirden's fault. Nobody is coaching players to be careless with the puck or give up a ton of SHGs. That said, the Penguins could stand to develop some new concepts and/or regularly employ some stuff that works on power plays. Shooting, for one. But an effective net-front guy. Smart, quick passing. Role that fit personnel. It shouldn't be this complicated, honestly.

12:43
Jason, given that both Jones and Skene are power arms do you think the Bucs will try to arrange it so they are not pitching back to back against the same team in a series or is it really not an issue?
Jason Mackey
12:44
I don't think it's an issue. Jared Jones and Paul Skenes pitching back-to-back is a problem many clubs would love to have. Maybe at some point you could flip Falter or otherwise get a soft-tossing lefty in there. But I'd hardly call it a big deal.

Jason, guys watching their assumed home runs from the plate that turn out to be singles has to stop, no?  Almost, but not quite as bad, as our outfielder's inability to call each other off and/or take charge. This team cannot afford fundamental lapses, correct?
Jason Mackey
12:45
Ummm, yeah. I'd say so. Would be willing to bet those have been addressed. The communication between outfielders has been better.
PrinceBob
12:45
If Jack Suwinski remains almost exactly the hitter he's been since he got here, do the Pirates keep him in the majors because of the power he shows now and then or does there come a time when they decide the home runs aren't wrth the frequent dead spot in the line up? I'm inclined to think that for now the home runs do justify the dead spots if only because he'd likely be replaced by someone who would create a similar dead spot but with fewer home runs.
Jason Mackey
12:46
If Jack continues to hit .178 and have an OPS in the .500s, yeah, I think he gets sent to. They'd have to, right? They're trying to ride it out, which I commend, but this can't be it. I also don't think this is who Suwinski is as a player. It'll change.

What is going on with Carmen down in Indy?  Based on the box scores I have seen it looks like he may be scuffling a little.  I really was thinking he would be there with Holderman/Chapman in holding down the backend.
Jason Mackey
12:47
Yeah, I was surprised by that, too. The 6.92 ERA ain't great, that's for sure. Haven't heard any specific problems but obviously results have not been there. Nicolas has been much better.

Glad that the Pirates finally promoted Gonzales, but how 'bout Bae and Pegureo? Also, any chance they'll just take the loss with Tellez? Not hitting is one thing, but his hustle leaves a lot to be desired. Voglebach was a big guy, too, but at least he tried.
Jason Mackey
12:49
I don't think we're there with Rowdy. Would like to see more power out of Peggy. At this point, I would probably go Bae first. But I just don't think they're be willing to cut bait on Rowdy or do much more than Nick, who got a chance (finally) because he was their best hitter at Triple-A, and they're gotten nothing out of 2B.

Jason, anything to these pernicious NJ rumors?  The Garden State?  I think not.  More like a Snooki-infested industrial wasteland.....
Jason Mackey

I'm not sure what you're saying, but I wouldn't totally discount the Sully/NJ stuff. It makes sense on both sides if they could figure out fair compensation.

You think Sheldon Keefe replaces Todd Reirdan as Assistant Coach ?

I think Wilkes-Barre/Scranton makes more sense.

Going to game tomorrow and fired up!  When is the Skenes’ press conference today? Did it already happened? Why is it so hard to find? Went to Dick’s yesterday to get a 30 T-shirt with Skenes’ name on back. Nada. Like why don’t the Pirates have merch already on the shelves? Wasn’t this planned? Excited but also frustrated. Help me!
Jason Mackey
12:51
Do you always speak in questions? 1:15. No. I don't know. I believe they're streaming it online. I don't work for the Pirates or Dick's ... or have any input in their merch. Would imagine the team store has them, no?
Jason
12:51
Do you think everyone is putting to much pressure on Skenes?
Jason Mackey
12:51
I guarantee you Skenes is putting more on himself. He's used to it.

Hello Jason. Did anybody see this lineup looking this bad? I actually thought they would be decent. I hope Gonzalez continues his hot hitting. Any other call-ups that may help the lineup coming?
