Bart appeared to definitively apply the tag on Bellinger slide before the question of possession. If so, why couldn't replay conclusively determine that he was showing the ball to the umpire when it was knocked out?  Wouldn't runner already be out at that point? Replay shows a solid grip until it's batted away.  I the umpire missing it in real time, but not replay officials blowing it with video evidence. It seems like a tacit endorsement of the bad old days of home plate collisions where runner is rewarded for causing ball to get knocked out.

Their argument was that Bart didn't complete the tag because he didn't hang onto the ball. The contact was ruled accidental. I disagree, mind you. To me, transferring the ball represents a completed tag. But that was reasoning.

I don't think it's that black and white. But recently, yes. He stuck with Nicolas too long on Skenes' debut and didn't get Stratton out quick enough last night.

I think that's an overreaction, but you're certainly entitled to feel however you wish. Restarting a rebuild because a bullpen has a 4.66 ERA in May seems a little harsh.

If/when Tellez gets cut, who plays first base? Does Connor Joe go there full-time? Any chance guys like Triolo or Grandal get reps? Henry Davis possibly?

Joe will certainly go there. I think you could see some Triolo. I doubt Grandal. His value is behind the plate. I'd also not disrupt things with Davis. Maybe see if Joey Bart could handle it? If Grandal for some reason was comfortable there, I could be talked into it. But I don't think he is.

Oh, boy. I wish they would, but how? Obviously don't have the space. How would you free it up? Trade Karlsson? That would be nuts. I'd also like to see them get a different type of winger. Let OC play with Sid and Rust. Probably good with Geno, Bunting and Rakell. Improve the bottom-six. I'd like size and someone who could play up in the lineup sometimes.

Looking recently at mlb website at the Pirates top prospects. I think I recall 11 of the top 14 are pitchers. With Termarr and two SS prospects. Maybe an outfielder. Is this normal?  When will we deal for a power hitter, ours don’t seem to be developing?

I think it's a little skewed toward pitching, but I don't think it's abnormal. I'd have to be really convinced to give up young pitching. The Pirates aren't going to buy this. They need to grow it. But I get they might need to trade for something now. Just be careful. Better to spend smartly in free agency and buy a bat that way.

Jason, with the Steelers playing Christmas Day on Netflix, a pay TV service by the way, how long will it be until the playoffs and Super Bowl will be pay per view events like boxing?

I don't know if the NFL would do something like that, at least for the biggest events. I think they want the worldwide attention. Now, you can stretch the reach of your product in the meantime. But I think they value the eyeballs for something like the Super Bowl.

Tellez compares with Willie Stargell: both big men who bat left handed and play first base! The only difference is that 'Pops' Stargell could hit and Rowdy doesn't have a clue! Ever thought of that?

Derek Shelton doesn’t have a lot to work with and in my opinion gets more flak than he deserves …. But the bullpen management against the Giants was really bad. Do you think he was just trying to shake things up and try new things? Or is this a bigger problem?

The problem is guys not performing. I'm not defending Shelton, but you said it yourself, we also gotta acknowledge what he's working with here. Chapman couldn't find the strike zone. That's not Shelton's fault.

Are you excited for the new 12 team CFP? I have mixed emotions about it myself. Some teams (Bama, UGA, Ohio St, etc.) realistically will never miss the postseason again. Not sure the likelihood of a 12 seed magically winning that many games against loaded teams in a row... but after all, that is why you play the games!

I am extremely excited, honestly. I think this is going to be gigantic. I'm OK with the big boys being in there. They should. But I also think we're going to see some cool upsets. I think the whole thing is going to be a lot like the pitch clock -- people saying oh my God this is awesome, why didn't we do this sooner?

Jack Flaherty on a $14 M 1 year prove-it deal looks like money well spent on a late FA signing. Better than the $13.7 M spent on Chapman & Tellez ($13.7M). Hindsight’s 20/20. The Pirates Payroll is 29th. They can afford to DFA Tellez & pay him his $3.2M. Joe & Triolo @ 1B now that Nicky G.’s on 2nd & Hayes back @ 3rd. Or add Lamb to the 40 Man. Olivares new RF. Plus, they need Delay if Yaz’s injured…again.

Yeah, it was not great money spent on Chapman and Tellez. That's fair. Agree with most of the personnel moves. We've been talking a decent amount about those.

They need to call Davis back up. He has nothing to prove in the minor leagues. Almost 1.000 career OPS in MiLB. He needed just a week away from Haines and is back to normal.

I think there's something to be said for letting him get comfortable doing what he's doing, basically taking his swing back to what it was. You want it to stick. I'm OK letting him form habits and build confidence.

The Pirates need help at 1st base. I know Cruz wants to play SS, but wouldn’t he be a better fit at 1B? Too many errors, IMHO, and with his length, fielding ability and arm as a cutoff relay, his power fits perfectly at 1B.

I wouldn't make that move in-season. If you're gonna do it, next offseason is the time. I'd also rather see him in the outfield, where you can take advantage of his athleticism.

Maybe you've mentioned this before, but what did the Pirates pivot FROM when they signed Chapman? Another starting pitcher or a bat? It's a long season, but Chapman to this point sure looks like an extremely poor allocation of resources for a team with limited money and many offseason needs.

They would piss him off, one. I may or may not care. Then, who plays shortstop? And how does Cruz handle first base? A position he has never played and one he doesn't want to play? Oh, and we're also wasting what might be the best arm on the team.
