Hi Jason. Thanks for all of your great work. So, take out your crystal ball and tell us what position the Steelers will take in the first round of the 2026 draft they are hosting.
Jason Mackey
1:28
Ooooh, I like it. I'll go with a defensive lineman. Corner next season. D-line after that.

Just a comment. Skenes and Jones only reason I watch Pirates. Was at Skenes opening days
Jason Mackey
1:28
They've been awesome.

I don't watch college sports anymore.  In my mind, the athletes are just mercenaries.  Do you foresee a national trend where audiences will shrink precipitously?
Jason Mackey
1:28
No, I don't.
Cosmo Kramer

Is there still time to just do the opposite of what decisions Ben Cherington makes?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Good one.

At this time of year, are you getting NFL fatigue? I mean, except for interview opportunities, what to OTAs accomplish to merit so much coverage?
Jason Mackey
1:28
I'm not, personally. Doesn't seem from the readership of our Steelers stuff that our audience is, either. I actually find it fascinating. The NFL has become a year-round thing.

Skenes and Jones only reason I watch Pirates. I wish there were more. Not even Cruz right now. Went to Skenes home opener and watched bullpen warmup. How exciting! After national anthem, Skenes didn’t move until color guard left the field, at least a minute after anthem ended. Impressive guy. Just wanted to put that out there.
Jason Mackey

Yep. There's a lot to appreciate with Paul. Thanks for the comments.

No question, but a comment I have made here many times.  Using a new reliever every inning for relief and expecting them all to be effective on the same night is the reason why I cannot support Shelton's managerial style with pitchers.  It will not work.
Jason Mackey
1:29
Shelton's style isn't all that dissimilar from other managers, but you do you.

You have already accurately pointed out the shortcomings of the Cherington rebuild. Top it off with some hapless free agent signings that aren't producing and you have to wonder if we want this guy to keep digging. Am I wrong?
Jason Mackey

I don't think it's fair to pull the plug at this point, no.

do you think pens go afterJake at his projected 63 mil over 7 yrs.?
Jason Mackey

I don't think so. I don't see how they could fit it.

What's Joe Maddon up to?
Jason Mackey

Man oh man. That would be something, wouldn't it?

Im pretty worried about the pirates but not for this season(they arent gonna contend) but for the future. their lineup is pretty bad, reynolds and cruz really. hayes sucks at the plate.  Endy/henry looked terrible in mlb.  there are no offensive prospects in the minors other then termar. what are they gonna do for offense?
Jason Mackey
1:31
I'm not as worried as you. Not sure where you're getting some of the vitriol, but it's something. Endy is out for the year. He could improve. They're young players. They can get better. Give it time.

When umpires call a strike, does it ever sound to you like they're actually saying "strike?" Go me it always sounds like they're grunting. I have discussed this briefly with others who watch baseball and know I'm not the only person who rarely hears "strike."
Jason Mackey
1:32
Yeah, it's more of a grunt. Maybe someone will perfectly and calmly articulate the word just for you.

Any update on (1B) Nunez? I remember you being high on him 2 years ago but he seems to have disappeared. Keep up the good work!!
Jason Mackey

Still in Triple-A. Lost a bunch of weight. Has actually been halfway decent. Won't jump over Lamb, but could put himself in the conversation with some power. Never got it to translate from Double-A to Triple-A.

There are many more reasons to restart the rebuild than just a terrible bullpen... it's year 5 and their win total looks like it'll take a significant step backward from year 4. The FO has shown ZERO ability to develop hitters. There's no end in sight to the losing!
Jason Mackey

Okiedoke.

Do the Bucs make the postseason in the next three years in your opinion?
Jason Mackey

Yes, I think they do.

Jason, you are the best! My Stargell comparison was a joke and I never thought you would respond, but you did! That's why you chats are the best!
Jason Mackey

Haha. It made me laugh a little, too.

Jason your columns are a pleasure to read. No shaming and crumungering.  As an old timer I don't like all of the new stat lines being mentioned all the time. Exit velocity and such. Give me the story and nothing but. I've. been reading the the sport pages for fifty years and minus the numerous stats your the best. Keep on keeping on.
