The Truth
12:30
I think an underrated storyline for the Steelers season, is if Russell Wilson stuggles early, which is entirely possible, fans will be CLAMORING for Justin Fields much like we did with Pickett when Trubisky was stinking it up. If Russ isn't good to start will we see Fields?
Jason Mackey
12:30
I think they're going to give him runway. Like two games in, I don't think the Steelers will flip that switch. Would think at least around the four-game mark. Russ has to have an idea of how that would go.

12:30
Do you believe the Steelers will sign a decent WR before the regular season? If Pickens gets hurt they are toast.
Jason Mackey
12:31
I do. I don't see how they go into the season with Jefferson, Miller, Watkins and Wilson opposite Pickens.
BR
12:31
Jason, what has been my secret sauce in the 6th month of the year (in the Julian and Gregorian calendars), and why pray tell cannot I bottle it for use during certain other months of the year?
Jason Mackey
12:31
Good question. If I knew, I would sell it, trust me. You make a good amount of money.
The Truth
12:31
Do you still think a trade for a receiver is on the table? I can't picture them going into the seasons with no proven commodities in the WR room. Pickens is talented, but not a sure thing to me. He seems too volatile. Do you think the WR room will be different come week 1?
Jason Mackey
12:32
I do. I don't see how you kick tires on Aiyuk, Metcalf, Sutton and a few others, then just don't do anything. That's odd.

Pirates get JJ Bleday, Paul Blackburn.  A's get Harrington, Peguero, and a lottery ticket (maybe Taylor too). Who says no?
Jason Mackey
12:32
Probably the A's.

I've scored a lot of baseball games over the years and occasionally got paid for it. Last Sunday there was a play that I can't think how I'd have scored it so I'd like to see what you think. And I can't remember any of the players involved but Yamani Grandal. It was the dropped pop foul. That's an error. Normally a batter benefiting from an error gets on base but for batting average purposes is counted as making an out. But in this case he continues to bat, gets a hit and I believe an RBI. For batting average purposes which play counts, the hit which brings his average up or the error which brings the BA down? Is he given two at bats for that one plate appearance (seems unlikely)? Is the run he drove in earned or unearned?
Jason Mackey
12:36
I remember the dropped foul, but I don't see that it was scored an error. ... I would imagine the at-bat (and hit) counts. But in determining earned/unearned, you recreate the inning as though the play was made, so it's going to potentially lead to unearned runs(s).

JJ Bleday would look awfully good in Center Field…Seriously how long is Suwinskis leash ? And Rowdy is hitting a bit more but 3 home runs isn’t cutting it
Jason Mackey
12:40
Rowdy has a .935 OPS over the last 30 days. I'm fine with that. I don't know on Suwinski. It's odd, yes. But what better option do they have that they're ignoring? I'm fine with trying Gorski, but yinz are acting like he's Roberto Clemente.

As always Mr. Mackey, your work is must read. Any whisperings on whom the Pirates are looking at/hoping for in the upcoming draft? It's always hard when not drafting 1-1 as one cannot predict the board but have they "fallen in love" with anyone?
Jason Mackey
12:40
Thank you for the kind words. No whispers. They look at a lot of guys. And keep any directional plans -- which will be dictated by the eight teams in front of them -- exceptionally close to the vest.

Good afternoon.  Do you think Nutting and Cherington publicly talking about making trades is sincere or just a means of trying to placate the fans?  Thank you Jason.
Jason Mackey
12:41
I think it's sincere. I think Bob wants to see something done.

Jason, for the record, where do you stand on the whole: Am I a potentially acceptable Number 1, a potentially superb Number 2, or a potential freaking disaster waiting to happen argument?
Jason Mackey
12:42
I think you could be an elite #1 ... if there's someone to complement you on the other side and you do a better job of keeping your emotions in check.

The Steelers only have 3 playoff wins since the 2010 season ending Super Bowl loss to the Packers. To answer the age-old question "Who on God's green earth earth could the Steelers possibly hire if they fired Mike Tomlin" here is a list of some NFL head coaches hired since then:
  • Andy Reid: Kansas City Chiefs, 2013
  • Sean McDermott: Buffalo Bills, 2017
  • Kyle Shanahan: San Francisco 49ers, 2017
  • Matt LaFleur: Green Bay Packers, 2019
  • Zac Taylor: Cincinnati Bengals, 2019
  • Mike McCarthy: Dallas Cowboys, 2020
  • Kevin Stefanski: Cleveland Browns, 2020
  • Dan Campbell: Detroit Lions, 2021
  • Nick Sirianni 2021
  • Jim Harbaugh 2024
  • Frank Reich 2023
  • Sean Payton 2023
  • DeMeco Ryans 2023
  • Shane Steichen 2023
  • Brian Daboll 2022
  • Mike McDaniel 2022
Is every single one of them worse than Mike Tomlin? Or at least 5 or even 10 better?
Jason Mackey
12:43
You're presenting an argument to someone who doesn't make hiring/firing decisions for the Steelers. You can get as mad as you want to about continuity, how the Steelers do things, believing Tomlin is an idiot, whatever. But if they don't agree with you -- and they don't -- why act indignant when they keep the guy?

If we had a time machine and brought some successful soft tossing pitchers forward to the game today, say Bill Lee, Stu Miller, John Tudor, etc. and put them on a major league roster would they be as effective now as they were in their time? Tudor once said he doubted he could get a high school team out with his stuff but major leaguers struggled with it. Hoyt Wilhelm had a long, long career and finished with a 2.52 ERA. Is there something about today's game that lessens the likelihood of guys like this being successful?
Jason Mackey
12:44
I think it might heighten it, tbh. Guys throwing as hard as they can, then they have to sit back and back and back?
Vinnie
12:44
Alright Jason, I’m tired of all the Aiyuk trade talk.  In your opinion, come September,  is he a Steeler or not?
Jason Mackey
12:44
I don't think so. Second contract too prohibitive.
PrinceBob
12:44
And to turn the last question the other way, would guys who hit for average but with little power, Matty  Alou, Brett Butler, maybe Wade Boggs, have a place in the game today if we put them into that time machine?
Jason Mackey
12:45
Sure. Why not? Luis Arraez fit. If you can hit, you can hit. I don't see why that would change.
Bednar's Oblique
12:45
Jason, am I a totally different matter than the previous issue known as Bednar's Lat?
Jason Mackey
12:45
Yeah, different side of the body.

Good Afternoon Jason what do You Think About Mitch Keller and Paul Skenes Both have looked Good Go Bucs this weekend
Jason Mackey
12:46
They should both be headed to the MLB All-Star Game. Keller's last start should've been a QS, if Michael A. Taylor caught that ball. Skenes continues to impress and show he's mature beyond his years. Awesome stuff.

12:46
Why did the pirates never give Miguel andujar a chance? How much better would the pirates be this year if we kept him and actually let him play
Jason Mackey
12:47
It's a weird one. I don't know if he would have affected things much. Maybe. It seems like, after he stunk early on, they made up their mind that he was a bad player, despite him continually hitting at Triple-A. And even in the offseason, they couldn't see him any other way. Mediocre player. Not worth the money. Won't consistently produce. I think they view his approach -- swing early and hard -- as almost sideways to what they want to do as a team.
B Davis
12:47
I know I’m in the minority here. But is there a reason (other than pure future potential) that we are consistently starting Jack S. in center over Michael A Taylor. Jack is a -2 bWAR at this point and MAT is .5 WAR. If they both don’t have a working bat, don’t you go with the superior defender?
Jason Mackey
12:48
I think they're trying to get both going. It's not working, mind you. It's also lefty/righty, and the Pirates love splits. So, it's not just about defense.
Brandon
12:48
What do you think is the best case scenario for the pirates at the deadline?
Jason Mackey
12:48
That they add a bat and a reliever without giving too much prospect-wise. An outfield bat, I should say. I'm OK letting 1B continue with what we've seen.

Favorite cartoon growing up? Scooby-Doo was mine
Jason Mackey
12:49
Hmmm ... I always liked Bobby's World. Simpsons, of course. Didn't watch a ton of cartoons, though.
