I would have a tough time seeing them get much for either one. Taylor has been bad offensively, but similar to Hedges, I think someone would like him for defensive and thinking they could get him out of this prolonged funk.

My next "Skenes" comment is to wonder if it makes sense for a money challenged team to do a big money long term deal with a starting pitcher in his first year or two no matter how spectacularly he's playing. The team has him for six years and it's easy to wonder how healthy that pitcher will be in that time and certainly beyond. I think the Keller deal made sense because, knock wood, he'd been around for a while and has been pretty durable.

Sounds like the subject of my column today. Sure it would make sense. Just tough to see it actually happening.

Isn’t it a shame that Pirate fans can only hope to keep Skenes for 4 or 5 years? Isn’t this what is wrong with baseball today. Only a few teams can (or will?) keep stars for most of their careers? Isn’t another problem is that even if we DO pay up, we will have to do another Liriano-like deal if it proves onerous?
Jason Mackey
1:01
Yeah, it stinks. It's why I wish there was a cap and floor and revamped revenue sharing. If a team wanted to make that sort of commitment, awesome. Get creative with team-building other ways. I just wish MLB was more like the other sports. It's not setup for small-market clubs to keep players.

How accurate was the report that the Orioles offered Holliday for Jones?
Jason Mackey
1:02
Not sure. I know it was reported. Then I saw a couple others refuted it. I have enough to worry about with my own job. I try to not pay attention to that stuff. To each their own.

Who, if any, of the Bucs minor leaguers are untouchable in trade talks, regardless the target?
Jason Mackey
1:03
I would be really shocked if they were willing to give up, say, Ashcraft or Chandler, given what they've done this season and what they represent. I don't think they would hang up the phone on anyone. But it would take a lot.

Done with Skenes so here's an easy question that I've wondered about now and again. When a team is playing in Milwaukee now and is next going to Chicago or vice versa, do they fly for such a short distance? How about Pittsburgh to Cleveland?
Jason Mackey
1:03
The Pirates take a bus. I don't know about other teams.

I just can't get the future photo of Aiyuk standing next to his twin, Mike Tomlin. Do you see any chance of the Steelers acquiring him? And if not him, who?
Jason Mackey
1:04
I don't see it. I just think the contract demands/expectations are too much for the Steelers to handle given what they probably expect out of George Pickens. Courtland Sutton is a more reasonable option, IMO.

What is more likely to happen: Scenes strikes out Judge, or Judge sends one over the fence?
Jason Mackey

Strike out.

I'm just back from three weeks in Montana. There's an independent minor league there with a team in Missoula that I went to see a couple times. They have an outfielder who in 41 games is hitting .443 with 20 home runs. Is the talent gap between that league, the Pioneer League, so large that no MLB team thinks this guy's numbers make him worth signing and at least getting a look?
Jason Mackey
1:05
Ha. I have no clue. I just started muttering at you under my breath after reading "three weeks in Montana." Didn't see much after that. Maybe he doesn't wanna leave. Not sure I would.

was the .131 college batting average before the dreaded splinker? I wonder what the average would be now?
Jason Mackey
1:05
It was. The splinker is a new thing. Isn't that nuts?

In an ideal world.....lets say every pitcher we have is healthy after the all star break, including Jones. Who is in our starting rotation and who gets moved to the bullpen?
Jason Mackey
1:06
Probably Skenes, Jones, Keller, Falter, Perez and Gonzales ... Ortiz to the 'pen? Not sure. It's also not a decision we have to make right now. But I do think they will try and go with six to space out starts.

Assuming Gonzales is the 2B full time now, where do you see Peguero fitting in? I think Peggy has a future and will be a good player. Could he be a utility guy with a bat first approach? Maybe learn some CF?
Jason Mackey
1:07
I get asked this often. I don't see it. Peguero has never played outfield. Has talked about not being comfortable out there. I'm not sure he fits, Bill. He might be best deployed as a trade chip. Not moving Cruz. Probably not moving Nick. Maybe a utility role for Peguero? I'd probably rather have Triolo there. Better defense. Not a huge different in the bat. Can play more places.

Shouldn’t it be telling to Bucs Mgmt that Haines is an issue when a guy like Olivares who put up good stats for KC comes here and no longer hits well?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Or Taylor. Rowdy has two bad months, basically CTL+Z's the whole thing, then hits. Henry hitting in Triple-A and not here. It's not just Haines. It's a hitting program that has been a problem for people.
Bill
1:08
How much longer do we have to watch Michael A Taylor play CF? Defense has been ok at best and he can't do little things or hit. I'd rather give Bae a chance to play along with Suwinski. They need to learn what Bae can or can't do
Jason Mackey
1:09
I've got a pretty idea on what Bae can and can't do. Not arguing to play Taylor, mind you. I'd probably just keep doing what they're doing, then see what they can get for MAT then.

Will I get any comeback player of the year votes? I haven’t hit this well since my father was coaching.
Jason Mackey

Ha. Love you, Jake. But I'm not sure it's comeback player of the year type of stuff. Has to be someone else, right?

Have the Pirates opened discussions at all about a Skenes or Jones extensions or is this all conjecture at this point?
Jason Mackey

I have no intel saying they've had those discussions.

Who starts tonight for Pirates?

Marco Gonzales makes the most sense. Hasn't started since July 6. He's due.

Do you see a potential offseason trade of Henry David? I feel the organization is happy with Bart and with Endy returning Davis is the odd man out.
Jason Mackey
1:14
That's an odd-but-true one. If they got something for him, yeah, I could see it. Not sure I see the fit. At the same time, I don't know if they would get something that would make them feel good about punting on a 1-1 pick this early.

Does the Nutting family care at all about reputational hits in earned media concerning their lack of financial commitment to the club or desire to win— or are they de-sensitized to attacks by now and just concerned about the bottom line?
Jason Mackey
1:16
Can't speak for Nutting's family. He's certainly aware of the criticism. That being said, I know one way of making it go away ... and, look, this is probably a bigger discussion on Nutting. But I think that he thinks they're doing this in a smart and sustainable way. We'll see if he's right. I know those reading this probably have doubts. I certainly get it. Not defending anything. Just answering a question by how it's viewed from that side.
