Is this the year that the Steelers finally win a playoff game? Will we even make the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
12:30
Bless you. ... I think the Steelers have enough to win a playoff game. Maybe I'm nuts. But they've invested a ton into the defense. Like the draft. Arthur Smith's offense should be solid. Now, can they win multiple? Have some doubts there. But I think they can go to the playoffs and win a game, absolutely.

Do you ever see the Pirates making a Arenado, Yelich, Goldschmidt style deal for an established player on a long term contract playing for a uncompetitive team?
Jason Mackey
12:30
I don't. I wish. But I don't.

What is your level of interest in the Olympics? Do you have a favorite event to watch?
Jason Mackey
12:31
Another one! I'd describe it as tepid, honestly. My wife will want to watch track & field, so I'll watch that. Can't say I'm huge into it. I might get more into it if the timing was different, but right now, I'm way more interested in Pirates, Steelers & college football starting. Only so many hours ...

Jazz Chisholm probability?
Jason Mackey
12:31
I think there's a chance. Don't know how good of one.

Hi Jason!  Is a Pirates trade imminent and if so, who do you see us bringing on board?
Jason Mackey
12:32
I think they will do something, yes. Imminent, probably not. But business has started to pick up here, which is good.

Adding at the deadline is clearly something the team needs to do but the Pirates have some veteran pitchers who are expendable. Who are some teams that would matchup in a trade to send out Gonzales/Perez?
Jason Mackey
12:33
Anyone who would need a veteran starter to eat innings, honestly. Rockies? Even the Marlins? Blue Jays?

12:33
i don’t need names or specifics, but does GMBC add at least one starting lineup bat before the deadline?
Jason Mackey
12:33
Yes.
Nathan
12:33
Your overall Pirates deadline predictions?
Jason Mackey
12:34
That they add a bat. Nothing splashy, but they'll do something.

Which happens first: Pirates player wins CY Young, Pirates player wins MVP, Pirates throw a no hitter, or Pirates win the World Series?
Jason Mackey
12:35
I think Skenes throws a no-no next season en route to his first Cy Young. Two years later, the Pirates win the World Series. That work?
Tyler
12:35
How close are the pirates to getting jazz?
Jason Mackey
12:35
I can't give you a progress report. Not how this works.

Talk us off the edge...will the Pirates make a significant enough move or moves to stay in contention or are they gonna hold fast and run out the 2nd half of the season with what is on the roster or in our minor league system?
Jason Mackey
12:35
They'll make at least one move to improve the major league club.
Jason
12:35
Hey Jason! How many years out are the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers from another Championship? If you could list them in order and what year you think it would/could happen.
Jason Mackey
12:36
This sounds insane, but the Pirates are ... probably the closest? It's not the Penguins. I know that. The Steelers ... if they fix WR2 and have some things break their way fast with the draft, maybe it's them. Could be. Either them or the Pirates, crazy as it sounds.

as I look at the pirates lineup, there are several ways to improve it, but it just screams "I NEED A RIGHT HANDED (or switch hitting) CLEANUP HITTER" the loudest, as the current cleanup guy is a tiny 2b with a sub-700 ops.   Maybe that's Rooker, maybe that's banking on Taylor Ward's good peripherals, maybe that's hoping the waters of the Allegheny turn Ian Happ into a yinzer superhero.  What strikes you as the biggest common sense need?
Jason Mackey
12:38
I mean, I'm not against them landing Ian Happ. That would be incredible. I also don't think you set out to add a CLEANUP hitter. You want a bat. That can look a variety of ways. I'd probably prefer that guy be left-handed, but it's not a huge thing. I worry about Rooker's defense and only having one DH spot. But if the cost was reasonable, obviously you do it.

In a thin market, do the Pirates get creative about upgrading the margins of their roster? Guys who may not be the best fit or the biggest upgrade, but an improvement none the less. Could use a better utility option than Triolo and a better Catcher than Grandal. OF seems to be the most sought after thing this deadline, not sure how many contenders are really looking for catching help. Seems doable to me on top of addressing CF.
Jason Mackey
12:38
I don't see that as being a big priority for the Pirates. They have plenty of in-the-margins players. They need a bat.
Justin
12:39
For his career, Hayes' OPS splits vs righties are almost 200 lower than vs lefties, and in 2024 the difference is *over* *400* points.   He mashes lefties and is utterly pathetic vs righties.. At what point do you consider acquiring a 3b or a 2b (moving Gonzales around) that allows them to platoon Hayes?  Brandon Lowe comes to mind.
Jason Mackey
12:40
I don't think they're looking to platoon someone who makes $8 million or whatever his salary is this season. I think you need to try and help him rediscover what he did over the second half of last season.

Are the Pirates the frontrunner to get Chisholm now that the Mariners have already gone out and gotten Arozarena?
Jason Mackey
12:41
I wouldn't say that.
Scott

Bucco fever is at an all time high. Bob Nutting has the opportunity to prove that he is committed to this team and not just a businessman trying to make money. If Nutting and management don’t make any moves to improve this team, how deflating would this be to the fanbase and would this officially be the final nail in the coffin that would drive away fans. This fanbase can only hear so many lies from management.
Jason Mackey
12:43
Buddy, have you seen Pirates baseball? They've spent three-plus decades doing stuff that should drive away any sane group. Thankfully, Pirates fans are an awesome brand of nuts. Yeah, people would be upset. I also think it's a waste of time because they're going to do something. But would get over it like they always do, provided the Pirates win.
Justin
12:43
the pirates are usually good for a "wtf?" type trade that nobody saw coming, such as the Castro - Falter deal.  Any stabs at who could be dangled?  Ironically i could see them sending Falter to a needy team and not really missing him.
Jason Mackey
12:44
I don't see Falter going. Even in limited innings, he serves a purpose. I think Perez or Gonzales goes. Maybe Taylor, too.

Hey Jason, we keep hearing the pirates are looking to add offense but, more than likely, wouldn’t come in the form of a huge name guy. What’s the point of signing a slightly better player/upgrade other than to say they did something at the deadline? You’d have thought after last offseason signing Taylor grandal Perez and company and getting next to nothing in return that cherrington would change his approach and go for one or two quality additions who are guaranteed to make you better over quantity, a bunch of below average players hoping for a prayer. As it turned out they threw a better part of 30 million down the drain anyways when they could of added a Hoskins or Montgomery type player. Thanks
Jason Mackey
12:45
I'm not sure of your question, Scott. But I don't think the guys you mentioned was any specific strategy. They tried to plug holes this offseason and failed. They're going to try and plug a hole or two at the deadline. We'll see if they can do a better job.
Justin
12:45
Did you ever get any sort of impression that Jazz Chisholm was problematic in any way? Not that the Marlins were your beat or anything.
Jason Mackey
12:45
Seems he has a unique personality. Not saying it's bad. I don't know enough. But it sounds like some asking around on him wouldn't be a waste of time.
