I wouldn't say that. Next year is year three of Skenes. What if you get up here in 2026? I agree that I don't think it's a ton. But it's also not like 3 or 20.
Konnor

Sorry I misspelled my name the first time. It happens time to time. Too many ways to spell Konner, Connor, Conner,
Jason Mackey

You're forgiven.

If BC doesn’t make a big trade (Bednar, Keller), will the fans become more disappointed with the franchise than they already are - if possible?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Ha! Yeah, is that possible? Maybe some well. I think the disappointment rests in Cherington remaining in position. Nutting should have acted over the offseason, and now it's coming back to bite him.

What could Nutting be thinking by letting Cherington essentially operate as a lame duck at this point, especially when this is a critical time to set the team up to try and be succeessful next season?
Jason Mackey

They feel -- again, their reasoning -- that bringing Cherington back meant bringing him back for all of it. That it's more disruptive to fire him in May, June or July than stick it out. Again, I disagree. Just trying to answer your question.

What did baseball people see to change the thinking to move away from 8-9 inning starters  to the 6 inning norm. Not criticizing it just genuinely don’t know what the thinking is. Same with less emphasis on contact hitters batting .300 vs HR swings.
Jason Mackey

They saw a crap ton of elbow injuries and pitcher prices skyrocket.

Will MT ever be held accountable for anything?
Jason Mackey

If this season flops, maybe. Will be interesting to see if this causes the Rooneys to act.

Thank you for your replies!  I know you are getting a ton of questions today lol. Just to piggyback on the state of the pitching/hitter disparity.  Do you think in the next five years or so, we'll see a shift in hitting strategies?  Will more hitters start to work on bat to ball contact and aim for a higher batting average and focus less on trying to hit home runs?  With the likely ABS system being in place soon (next year?), it could behoove batters to start hitting for average.  Just a thought...
Jason Mackey

I hope so. I think baseball needs to get back to that. All things are cyclical. We've ventured too far away from contact. So, yeah, wouldn't surprise me if it made a comeback at some point. I hope it does.

Jason, Is it possible that other gms around the league expect Ben Cherrington's annual sell off and salary dumps every year, resulting in more and more suspect prospects?  Is that what Ben Cherrington meant that the Pirates can't be risk adverse?  In other words, only long-shot A ball players is all they can garner..
Jason Mackey
1:12
I don't think that's what he meant by that, no. Do other teams expect a team in the Pirates position to sell? Maybe, yeah. Pretty obvious sellers. I think you're also discounting or failing to understand trades. We're not talking about two dudes negotiating over whiskey. There are teams of analytics people with every club researching and projecting crap. It's not as simple as you're making it sound.

Is Keller’s traditionally poor August/September limiting offers? I can’t imagine that a team looking to make a push would risk parting with high-end prospects or proven young talent, given his history.
Jason Mackey

I don't know what offers they've received, but I doubt it.

Ke'Bryan Hayes really never showed any emotion. Do you know if he was unhappy, or that was more just his personality? I never recall him ever showing any emotion like when he struck out or grounded out, etc.
Jason Mackey

Yeah, he was a tough one to read. I think it was more his personality. I don't think he was miserable in Pittsburgh, I'll say that. Same time, I don't think he was having a real good time, either. Not many have been given their failures over the years.

Mitch, Mason, Kenny? On what planet was that a "true" competition? Mitch was anointed the starter the day he signed his contract and received 98% of the first team reps throughout camp and pre-season.

My quote: "Don't know if we would call Kenny/Mitch/Mason a competition." But, yeah, sure.

With the concerns over Broderick at LT so far in camp, what options do the Steelers have if he turns out not be the answer? Is there a LT out there that would even remotely help the team?
Jason Mackey
1:15
Not who's just hanging around, I know that. If Broderick Jones doesn't work out, yeah, that's a pretty big problem for the Steelers. Especially because of the pick used on him.
OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much for participating. Appreciate all the wonderful questions. Enjoy the trade deadline & talk to you again real soon.
