Nah, it's probably because they hired me.

At what point do we, the fans, give up on this latest Pirates rebuild?
Jason Mackey
12:36
Not now, IMO. I understand people getting upset, but look at other rebuilds. Many have required three 100-loss seasons. Pirates will likely have two, plus a COVID season that was a 100-loss pace. There might be more, might be less. But I think saying fans should give up, when you look at timelines that have occurred throughout MLB, is probably tainted by previous Pirates' frustrations. ... Which, again, I get. But it doesn't mean that stupid mistakes by previously by other people will be repeated by this new group.

Disappointed in the Pitt defense? The line seemed to be producing consistent pressure, but everyone behind them seemed to not be ready for prime time. I can't believe they allowed the 4th and 16 play to be that close.
Jason Mackey
12:37
A little but nothing major. The runs up the gut were more frustrating. They should be defending the run better than that. But again, it's the first game. If we're having this discussion in November, yeah, that ain't gonna be good. But after one game, I think we can just let it play out.

Hi Jason, sorry for the baseball question: should the Pirates sign Kevin Newman?
Jason Mackey
12:37
No.
12:38
Ha. Not trying to be a jerk or glib. I just wouldn't do it. And I like Kevin. But I would rather see them give opportunity to Castro, Castillo, Bae, obviously Cruz ... and pretty much whatever up the middle. I don't know why they didn't trade him at the deadline. Again, not a criticism of Newman. Just not understanding why they didn't use those reps differently.

Did last night's game set a record for replays?  Did you disagree with any of the final rulings?
Jason Mackey
12:39
Dear God. I don't know if they keep stats on such things -- I hope not -- but way too many. Darn thing lasted 4 hours, 6 minutes. That's too much. And no. I thought, honestly, all of the calls were reasonable. Definitely not a TD at the end. Just too many stoppages, the timeouts waaaay too long.

I hate the Pitt put formation.. thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:39
This is the first I've heard of someone being agitated by a punt formation.
GhostofPopWarner
12:40
Boy, the day-after nitpicking from Pitt fans is intense  ... "QB took too many sacks." 'Run defense got gashed." "Couldn't cover Bryce Ford-Wheaton." "Izzy can't run the ball." "Punter is an idiot." Remember when fans used to enjoy beating a historical rival in a thrilling comeback? Let the coaches worry about cleaning up the (obvious) warts. Fans are supposed to bask in these close wins, not complain that the margin could've been bigger. Sports are supposed to be fun, right?
Jason Mackey
12:41
I don't understand why we can't do both. Obviously I'm not a fan, but what's wrong with enjoying a win while saying, "OK, I'm gonna watch this next week to see if it improves." Or, "Gee, I wonder how they're gonna address ____ and _____ because that wasn't good." Such a weird, either/or thing that doesn't have to be.
Prince Bob
12:41
Do you think Penn State or Pitt had the better win last night? Or were they about comparable?
Jason Mackey
12:42
On rivalry alone, I would have to say Pitt. But if you wanna bring conference play into the discussion, I guess you would have to say Penn State. I'm still going Pitt, though.

12:42
It's still early, but is it about time for a highly drafted/touted Pirates prospect from the recent drafts and trades to do something to get the fans excited? Roansy looks good and Cruz certainly flashes, but living here in O's country and watching Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman light it up makes me jealous.
Jason Mackey
12:45
I think it depends on who you're talking about. If you're saying Quinn Priester -- because the 2019 comps would line up -- I would hardly say that he's behind or doing something wrong. You're also talking position player vs. pitcher, and Henderson is just incredible -- hardly fair to hold everyone to that standard. Gorski was having a breakout year. Triolo won a Gold Glove. Fraizer was their MiLB PoY last year. Sabol was promoted. Again, the Orioles guys have been incredible. But it's not like that group has been a bag of crap. We're also talking less than two minor league seasons. Those are some crazy-high expectations. Also unfair to lump Adley in there because he was a college kid.
Prince Bob
12:46
What's the minimum number of wins Scott Frost needs to keep his job? The cost of his buy out is cut in something like half at the beginning of October.  I'd say eight does it, seven very well could, six is very iffy but could depending on how they happen.
Jason Mackey
12:46
I love how this has turned into a Nebraska chat. Haha. Not even being a smart ass. I'm all for any and all CFB discussion. I think if he's .500 or even remotely close at that point in the season, he's gone.
Prince Bob
12:47
Yoshi was hitting .400 plus at Indy when I checked a few days ago. Does that give him any realistic chance of getting back to Pittsburgh given the thinness at first base?
Jason Mackey
12:47
They cut ties with him in mid-August. He's in the Blue Jays' system now.
Mike Johnston
12:47
I can't believe they re-upped Mike Sullivan. He won 2 Cups with my players
Jason Mackey
12:48
Hahaha. This is a good one. Hope you're doing well, Mike.
Van Slyke
12:48
When are the Pirates going to try to take advantage of PNC Park and emphasize left handed power hitters in the lineup?
Jason Mackey
12:48
How about just emphasizing better hitters period, Slick? I don't care if they hit with their feet. Just gimme someone who doesn't hit .207 with a sub .600 OPS.
Bill
12:48
I'm hoping we see Ji-hwan Bae this September but if we dont, he has to be a lock to be added to 40 man this winter right? He'd be taken faster in the rule 5 draft than Chris Shelton was during the Littlefield fiasco.
Jason Mackey
12:49
I think we'll see him this September, Bill. Can't imagine, given what they've invested, that they would take that risk.
Steeltown
12:49
Jason, given how this o-line is performing for the Steelers, makes me wonder what Ben’s last two years would have been like had he still had Pouncey and Company in their prime. He still managed six fourth-quarter comeback wins, I would think with that line in their prime he would’ve been pretty special last year. I think you may see a lot of quick releases this year as well. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:50
This really has me thinking, Steeltown. Obviously it's revisionist history, right? But if an immobile Ben would have had a better line, could he have stayed? Maybe. Would've been a quick out, shotgun-style offense, but I think there was more left with Ben; what he had in the tank, however, wasn't gonna work with what was around him, if that makes sense.
The truth
12:50
If the Buccos are flirting with 100 losses next year then Cherington and co. lose all credibility in my eyes. 1. Do you think we will see some real improvement next year 2. Do you agree that they lose almost all credibility if they’re awful again?
Jason Mackey
12:52
I think it depends how you define awful. If they go 72-90 and are noticeably deeper, that's not traditionally very good, but I would be OK with that. If they again lose 100, do dumb stuff and the questions abound, yeah, that's an issue. I think we also need to remember how much time rebuilds take. Stuff does suck in the middle of them. Not excusing it. They should be better and deeper than they are. But we knew this year was going to be tough. Not sure why we're so surprised by it when it happens.

Barstool sports reports they ran out of beer at the BYB last night.  https://www.barstoolsports.com/blog/3431394/everybody-panic-somehow-so.... Who is responsible for that travesty?
Jason Mackey
12:53
Would imagine Aramark. It was also the first Backyard Brawl in 11 years, the largest crowd ever in Pittsburgh sports history and a great game. I view it more as efficiency than a travesy.

12:53
Where's  Mr. Zeise ? He better not be day drinking
Jason Mackey
12:54
I just hope Paul got to sleep last night. My man had about 19 Mountain Dews in the press box.
Prince Bob
12:54
A Nebraska chat? Interesting. I think I'm fascinated by how far they've fallen and can't get up. Yoshi's Indy stats must be outdated then. I was surprised to see his name there.
Jason Mackey
12:54
They don't delete the stats when a player moves on. Like I'm guessing you'll also see Beau Sulser, for example.
Yates
12:54
Overall assessment of QB play last night - both sides?
Jason Mackey
12:55
I was very impressed with Daniels. Looks like he'd fit at Georgia. I also liked Slovis, although he looked confused or off randomly at times. He also impressed me with his accuracy. Basically I want to see more, and I didn't think it was as terrible as others seemingly did.
