I don't know if I would compare the two. I also don't know if we know what we're going to get out of Smith's offense. Is it more Tennessee than Atlanta? I don't know. But if he had 26 and 8 this year, I'd be fine with it.

Jason, by informing our competition that I plan to have the Fed Ex guy dial up a few plays for JF, does that pretty much ensure that I will not be instructing Sir Arthur to dial up a few plays for JF?  I am like a Master of Illusion, who, by the way, has never had a losing record. Thanks for listening.
Jason Mackey

No way. I think it would be smart to take advantage of Fields' athleticism. I wouldn't treat him like Kordell 2.0, splitting him out wide, but I would use him some to run and throw in various sets.

Jason, can a man comfortably retire with a portfolio ranging somewhere between $5M and $10M? I'm trying to figure out the 4% rule, and I have also asked Rowdy for his thoughts, since he is a man of many talents.
Jason Mackey
12:41
Not sure of the exact joke here, but also don't think Shelton is gonna retire. Even if he's fired -- which he might be -- I think he goes back to being a bench or hitting coach. And I think he might be a very good one, honestly.

Do the 2 receivers that the Steelers added to the practice squad have a chance to make the 53 man roster?
Jason Mackey
12:42
I really don't think so. Sorry.

Say Skenes sees a bleak future with the Pirates  calls out the franchise to improve the roster or he wants out. Will there be any blowback or does this force ownership to fix this embarrassment? What does he have to lose besides 5 years of losing and having to pitch shoutouts to win a game. He should have 14 wins this season.
Jason Mackey
12:43
Not sure, JD. And honestly, Skenes ain't doing that. It's wasted effort. Does Paul privately think about life on the other side? Maybe. But I would be surprised if he verbally blasted them. I find it more likely Paul would march into Bob's office privately and demand he spend. Also, I say this every so often: It's not all spending. Not gonna discount it. Not gonna say it's good enough. But there's other stuff they've not done well that also matters (draft, development, international, etc.)

What are your odds of the Pirates leaving Pittsburgh in six years? And at that point, all things being equal, will anyone care?
Jason Mackey
12:44
Ahh, the nobody cares about the Pirates question!
12:45
Odds, zero. I don't think they go anywhere. And the nobody cares thing, gimme a break. I see our Pirates traffic. I see the traffic on my Shelton column right now -- No. 1 of anything on our site. As long as people are reading, which they do, a lot, I think they care.

It's looked to me like David Bednar looks fine when he's pitched recently with no save at stake or even when it's a three run save. Am I mistaken here?
Jason Mackey
12:46
Small sample, IMO. He's just been inconsistent. He's working on stuff. You're not wrong, but I think it's jus part of the process. With him, he's been a lot about pitch placement and being able to command his fastball.
Drew
12:46
Jason, just checking to make sure that you saw me give that ridiculous facewash to the hapless defender from Appalachia?  That was pretty sick. Hitting the dumbbells in the offseason is looking like a solid choice.
Jason Mackey
12:47
Lamar Allar, looking good. Was chatting with Joey Porter Jr. about your skills yesterday, as a matter of fact.
Will
12:47
Hi Jason -- good on you for defending Noah, and I had similar take. It was a totally fair question and hints at much bigger issue with Pirates and Shelton -- why is his team getting so badly skunked over past month where he'd need to pitch Rowdy so often?  I might have added "were players dispirited to have German start and virtually guarantee they'd be playing at a steep run deficit?"
Jason Mackey
12:47
Yep. I thought that, too. "Do you worry about the effects of having a position player pitch three times in 12 days?" That sort of thing. I think Shelton let us all in on how frustrated they all are right now. And he probably regrets doing it.
PrinceBob
12:47
Was Florida State overrated or were Georgia Tech and BC underrated?
Jason Mackey
12:48
Ooooh, boy. think Georgia Tech was underrated. I think they're going to be very good. But we were all probably too high on FSU, too. Speaking of which, I need to check on Zeise.

A lot of things breaking Penn State's way this year. No Michigan or Oregon on the schedule. Washington in transition, USC looking a bit down from last year. Plus they just look great. Is Ohio State the only obstacle to an undefeated season?
Jason Mackey
12:49
We're one game in. I think it would be presumptive to say that. But based on what Penn State has coming back, the growth we saw of Drew Allar against a very good defense, how physical Penn State was against WVU ... man, they're in a real good spot if they can keep this up.
PrinceBob
12:49
In which order do Pat Narduzzi, James Franklin, and Mike Tomlin leave their jobs and do all of them do it willingly?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Narduzzi, Tomlin and Franklin. Narduzzi goes to the NFL as an assistant. Tomlin decides he wants to step away for a year, does whatever, then steps back in with another franchise (not for a couple years, though). Franklin remains at Penn State.

Jason, the sample size for me not being able to hit even very poor MLB pitching is unfortunately growing.  This does not make sense on many levels.  Can you help talk me off the proverbial ledge? And yes, I know it took Joey B many years to find his stroke, but that is not providing much comfort at this juncture.
Jason Mackey
12:51
It's a process. Keep working. It's in there. Does that work?

Jason, I'm pleased to make the College HOF, but if I did not have that very unfortunate incident involving every bone in my face, I very well could have made the NHL HOF, no?
Jason Mackey
12:52
Oh, no doubt. Was the best power forward in the game at that time. Such a shame. Congrats on the Hall, though. You and Cullen together. December 4 should be fun.

Hey Jason, happy Thursday! Happy the Aiyuk drama is past us for sure, but my question is....with the feeling that SF fleeced us a bit and used us as leverage, does that instill a sense of distrust with perhaps not only our front office but other teams as well in doing future business? I'll hang up and wait for your answer. Thanks!
Jason Mackey
12:53
Hi Chris. Same to you. I don't think so. I get what San Fran was doing. Don't love it. But I get it. I don't think it's enough to hurt future business dealings. I think it happens more than we probably wind up hearing about, to be honest.

Over the past few seasons the Steelers have changed the entire QB room, the offensive line, the WR room, the secondary, and the offensive coordinator.  They still can't score enough, can't string together 60 full minutes, can't get on the same page, and can't play fundamentally sound football (like tackling).  If we replaced all the "problem areas" and still look the same, isn't it something bigger than the assistant coaches and players?  It is the knowledge and philosophy of the man in charge?  There is only one thing left to change.  What could it possibly hurt since nothing else has worked?
Jason Mackey
12:54
I think you're getting at a point that you think Tomlin should be fired, but I also think it's fair to let at least some of this season play out. Matt Canada wasn't any good. But what if Arthur Smith and Russell Wilson work together well? It is  possible, at which point, the narrative changes, no?

Jason, if we can't buy USS, surely your average yinzer would like to see us snatch up The Buccos from Sunglass Bob and invest a couple billion into the bullpen, yes?
Jason Mackey
12:54
Not sure the Buccos are for sale, but good joke.

The Pirates seem to hit rock bottom every week.  What are the chances the Pirates change manager/front office this season?  As a fan, it gets frustrating doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results
Jason Mackey
12:55
I don't blame you. I don't think they move on from Cherington. I don't how you can bring Shelton back, at least at things currently stand. And I think you absolutely have to go in a different direction with the hitting group. And all of that could change, obviously, if this keeps going downhill.

Jason, IKF and Jared are nice versatile players, but you are not going to win a pennant with freaking chess pieces, no matter how many you have, correct?
Jason Mackey
12:56
I have no issue with those guys as utility players. Ben Zobrist was on two World Series winners. Why can't that work here? The issue is they need to be able to hit (Triolo).

Following the trend, Pens 3C, Pirates corner OF bat, Steelers WR2, what is your prediction for the next upcoming high volume chat question?
Jason Mackey
12:57
Oh, boy. To quote a longtime baseball man: "I can't wait to see what fresh hell awaits us today." Maybe Steelers in the draft? Something about Penguins lines and Rutger McGroarty, Drew O'Connor and a couple others?
