Jason, I'm thinking K Cousins has a decent chance to put Coach T in an 0 for 1 hole? You like that prediction?
Jason Mackey
12:58
I do. My prediction: 27-17 Falcons.
Ryan
12:58
Good afternoon Jason Who leads us in Receiver Yards touchdowns sacks tackles and interceptions I’m thinking Pickens TJ Roberts and Minkah Go Steelers
Jason Mackey
12:58
Hi Ryan. I actually agree with all of those things except one. I'm going Queen over Roberts for tackles.

So... #87... when do we start asking the critical questions?
Jason Mackey
12:59
If it's not done by camp, I think we have a problem. That's the sense I've been getting around the team.
Rowdy
12:59
Jason, should my agent be asking BC to tone down my usage a little to preserve my second coming as a dependable middle reliever type?
Jason Mackey
12:59
There are better questions to ask. It was 11-0.

Will Endy get any professional ABs this year? Whats the latest on him?
Jason Mackey
1:01
He played in the Florida Complex League. Think he might be at Pirate City now. I think he does get ABs with an affiliate, yes.

Sorry Jason..gotta ask..over 74.5 wins- gotta be out of the picture now, right?
Jason Mackey
1:01
You're really on this one. I don't think it's out of the picture, no.

Best song on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack/from the film? For my money it has to be "New Age Girl"
Jason Mackey
1:02
Might be my favorite question of all time. It's either that or "Where I Find My Heaven." The whole thing is incredible. Thanks so much for the reminder.

Why would Hayward sign a contract that guarantees him the same amount of money, but requires him to be under contract for three more years?
Jason Mackey
1:03
I think he wanted to stay here. This allows him to get paid like he deserves -- provided he plays. Doesn't have to move. Knows what he has. One-helmet guy. To me, makes all the sense in the world.

Besides SP1, SP2, and wherever Reynolds plays, are there any slots locked down for 2025?
Jason Mackey
1:03
I'd say CF (Cruz), SP3, Bednar somewhere, 3B (Hayes, if healthy), IKF somewhere, C (Bart) and Holderman, Mlodzinski, Nicolas in some capacity in the bullpen. Probably Nick G at 2B?

I appreciate your response on Tomlin and respect your thoughts.  I'm just curious why it is said that players like to play for him.  We've had more players quit plays and not give full effort recently.  Do they like to play for him because he doesn't bench them when they slack?  Is it actually a bad thing that players love him?
Jason Mackey
1:04
I think some of that gets overblown. It's a great thing if they win. It's a bad thing if they don't, right? I'm guessing you missed this column from back in June: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/jason-mackey/2024/06/12/omar-khan-...

Is there a good reason to believe that the Steelers will have a top 10 defense this year?  The defense was good in points against last year, but they gave up a ton of yards, had some incredibly timed turnovers, and played a large number of backup QB's (they were ranked in the 20's in yards against last year).  PQ should help, but enough to make them top 10?
Jason Mackey
1:06
Funny you ask that: Will be writing a similar column this afternoon. Yes, I think so. What did they lose that will really hurt? Queen a clear upgrade. Benton should take another step. Others back. Elliott and Jackson have been fine and will likely be upgrades. I don't think top 10 is far-fetched at all.

What's Endy doing right now? Any chance we see some DH or 1B appearances at AAA before the year is over?
Jason Mackey
1:06
He was in the FCL. And, yes. At least in Indy. Don't see that he's in affiliated ball anywhere.

The Steelers side of the CH contract makes no sense either. They gained cap room they don't need this year and pushed money into future years in order to get first refusal on CH's continued employment. Lose-lose deal.
Jason Mackey
1:07
Not sure I follow your logic or agree. If Cam stinks, they can still walk away. Only $16 million -- what they would've paid anywhere -- is guaranteed. What's the problem?

Jason, I do pretty good work in front of the camera, no? Just wish I could sport that cool 5-o'clock shadow that NW sports.

Ha. Looking great, Fortress. When's our Hold My Cutter episode going live?

Jason, will I ever get the chance to experience meaningful fishing in The Allegheny in October?
Jason Mackey

Sure hope so, Liv. Yep, I think so.

Any early thoughts on Cruz in CF? The move makes sense on one level, but CF is important defensive position too and seems tough to learn on the fly.
Jason Mackey
1:09
Completely fine with it. He's looked ... not lost. There are going to be hiccups. I think it's the right move. And he said he wanted to get going, so I can respect that. If he wanted to get started now versus wait, I'm happy to accomodate that.

Given Bart looking like a solid pick up and possible answer at catcher, do Pirates take a harder look at Endy at first in 2025? That assumes Davis sticks at #2
Jason Mackey
1:10
Or Bart. I think it's entirely possible he or Endy winds up at 1B. It's a weird spot for them heading into '25. But you can't have 3 catchers unless one or multiple play another position.

Do you see Cutch coming back for another year?
Jason Mackey
1:10
I do. He told me in June that he wanted to play two more years. https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/jason-mackey/2024/06/18/pirates-pa...

Not the weight for Bednar Jason. Flexibility. Take a look at when he was getting lit up. He knows it’s mechanics. Said so himself. The mechanics are a flexibility issue. Lat strains- flexibility.

OK, thank you for clarifying.
OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much. Need to head to Steelers & then Pirates. Always look forward to these. Talk to you next Thursday!
