Jason, ever catch a buzz from discovering a "new" band and/or song?  Check out Car Wash Hair sometime. My man Dean does a fine cover as well.....trippy man....
Jason Mackey
12:35
Have not. I now have two music recs from this chat. Thanks!

Would you sign up for Watt and his contract knowing he was only going to play 75% of the games over the life of it? Basically missing a month every year...
Jason Mackey
12:36
Yes, I probably would. He's that good, that disruptive. Something I also think about Minkah after seeing his contract, hearing some of the fuss and then watching him in Week 1. Thankfully, that's a hypothetical that'll never, ever become reality.
Cliff

The addition of two bigger D-men signals a change in philosophy.  Are pens fans in for a year of tug of war between Sullivan (small, quick) and Hextall (big, physical) over style of play?  Will this create a problem where one of them has to go?
Jason Mackey
12:39
I don't see it that way, Cliff. I don't see those things as being mutually exclusive. They need some speed. They need some size. They need some skill. They need some sandpaper. They need all of it. ... I like what they did to the defense. We'll see if their forwards are deep enough. I worry if something happens to Jarry. But again, they're still a playoff team and maybe more the way currently constructed.
Cliff

suwinski and Mitchell are nearly at the Mendoza line.   Much hope?
Jason Mackey
12:42
They're in their early 20s, and we're talking about making an evaluation based on batting average. Lot of flaws there. They've struggled some, sure. This should be a time for that to happen and the Pirates to be better for it.
Cliff

Bryce Wilson has been bad at times, but I like his approach.  He goes after hitters.  I am so tired of pitchers getting an 0-2 count, then nibbling.  Wilson keeps coming at hitters, pitching to contact.   Yeah, I know, he has been hit hard, but the attitude is correct—gotta find his niche
Jason Mackey
12:43
Wilson has been burned by making mistakes ahead in counts. Same crap Keller did. 0-2 count, hangs a slider, bang. It's maturity. I like what Bryse has done. Maybe he figures it out, maybe he doesn't. But there is something in there.

I haven't seen a play that Canada has the OL shift work yet. Is it to try and trick NFL players or uncover the defensive scheme? Either way why keep doing it?
Jason Mackey
12:47
Can be a couple things, Tom. He might be trying to get the defense to move or tip its hand. Could also be trying to create confusion. Haven't charted that thing specifically, but as I said before, I've been less than impressed with Canada's offense on the whole.
Cody Bellinger
12:49
Don’t you think my .200 average and 137 strikeouts fit perfectly in Pittsburgh?
Jason Mackey
12:49
No, Cody, I don't. I'd rather the Pirate sort out what they have.
Tom
12:49
How big does the Penguins' D look?
Jason Mackey
12:51
Tough to tell right now from informal workouts, Tom, although I love what it looks like on paper. Curious if they wind up dealing Pettersson for cap reasons. Probably could, honestly. But I like the Rutta and Petry adds a lot.
Dean
12:51
Yes, Wareham is the name. You can easily find me under those ubiquitous most under-appreciated pickers of all time lists.....
Jason Mackey
12:51
Thank you very much.

Any chance the Pirates (or any destitute teams for that matter) start self imposing the shift ban the remainder of the year to get a head start with evaluating how these changes will impact them?
Jason Mackey
12:52
No, I doubt it. I think there's probably an element of maintaining the integrity of the game along with ... why? It's not like someone will start hitting a frisbee when someone shifts. There are plusses and minuses to teams shifting vs. not. Not really a new game anyone needs to learn.

12:52
Jason, I'm not looking through rose-colored specs, am I? If you squint hard enough, can you not see the vestiges of a decent starting rotation appear out of the sometimes foul mist coming off The Allegheny?
Jason Mackey
12:54
As I've been saying, I think the Pirates will eventually figure this out. Pitching is a part of it. Maybe it involves Ortiz/Oviedo. Maybe they sign one or two. Would imagine they finish around 62 wins in 2022. They should win around 72-75 in 2023 -- should be above .500 for longer early on, I would hope -- and then be above .500 in 2024.

Hey, just an FYI, my respect for you as a music man is now slightly diminished.  But you'll likely survive......
Jason Mackey
12:55
I'm going to go through my day telling people how my respect for them has now slightly diminished. That'll be ... interesting.
Jason Mackey
12:54
I will try to make it through the rest of the day knowing that.

Jason, I did not watch last night's game on Amazon Prime.  Were there commercials?
Jason Mackey
12:55
There were, yes. Overall, though, I thought Amazon did a terrific job with the presentation of everything.
The Man Mulcahey
12:55
Jason, we seem to have potential options everywhere but first.  How hard can it be to find a minimal glove, minimal arm Brutus type?
Jason Mackey
12:56
Well, I'd kinda like to have someone who can do a little of everything, if I could choose. But I get your point. They should have a better option over there than they do. Wish Mason Martin would be that guy. Right now he's not. I do believe they'll find someone.
Tom
12:56
I would say Watt getting hurt wasn't affected by the offense. Playing 50 plays at extreme level is one thing, but ONE Hundred is brutal on the body. No way the offense can go 3 and everytime and expect D to not be worn down in 2nd half. What say you?
Jason Mackey
12:57
I say you're stretching it. The play on which Watt got hurt could've happened any time. It wasn't because of overuse. You're looking to combine two things that are unrelated.
putinbatch
12:57
i was kind of kidding about Canada getting TJ hurt, hence the ;) , but i explained my reasoning: if we had a functional offense, it wouldn't have been a close game, and Jam Jon or whoever could have gotten some reps at the end while TJ could chillax a bit. But you didn't answer my question- who will score more TDs this week- offense or defense ;) thank you!
Jason Mackey
12:58
Sorry. I think they will score more touchdowns on offense. ... As I just said to Tom, the T.J. injury is unfortunate, but it could have just as easily happened on the first drive as when it did. And yes, the offense was bad. But I don't understand the need to combine these two.

Still don't hear anything good about Hayes. You said people would catch on, yet here we are: He's got a WAR/162 that's right on hall of fame pace (per BBref). All these old-heads care about is that his batting average is not as high as their childhood hero's who faced soft tossers every other day. Will people catch on before his deal times out?
Jason Mackey
12:59
Look, I don't expect to change the way people have thought about things for years. I'm also not about to make it sound like Hayes is some sort of finished offensive product. He's not. I think if Key develops the way he should, the crap will take care of itself. People will realize that he's worth his contract and probably a lot more by the end of it.

Jason, as always thanks for the chats.  I know it is late in the season but do you think Mike will start doing some chats?  It might be an outlet for the amount of baseball questions you get.  For a real question does Bae get called up before the end of the year?
Jason Mackey
1:00
You got it, Wayward. I don't know, to be honest. Mike has had to carry the bulk of the Pirates coverage with my doing other things, so whether he does or doesn't, not really worried about it. I can handle the Pirates Qs.
OC

Jason, since I clearly have not micturated down my leg so to speak on the defensive side of the ball, I get to stay at short for the foreseeable future, yes?
Jason Mackey
1:03
What a quote from Tomlin, huh? I think we need to let Cruz play, wait and see, evaluate, that sort of thing. Whether he stays or moves, lotta factors, including some outside of his control. But he certainly does not look out of place, which I'm sure some will take as an understatement. Not perfect. Has work to do. But I'm sure as heck not ready to punt on the kid.

OMG, enough with obscure jam band callouts! That said, why didn't the Pirates call up guys like Bae and Swaggerty long ago? There are 40 man roster decisions to make and you'd think they'd want the largest possible sample size of MLB action to weigh.
