Yeah, it's been rough. They're obviously hoping he finds a spark. Can't imagine it lasts much longer, not that they have a ton of other options. Henry is a much different conversation as a 1-1 pick and someone who has actually caught pretty well.
PrinceBob
12:27
Do you think there will be baseball in 2027? I just read that the Yankees are complaining about the Dodgers' payroll and it seems the owners are wanting to push for a salary cap harder than in the past. If each side is adamant about the cap, MLBPA against and owners for who breaks first?
Jason Mackey
12:28
It sure seems like we won't and that a strike is on the horizon. That's the general sentiment I hear anyway. It shouldn't happen. There's a path here. But it would require a cap and floor and revamped revenue sharing.
Hank
12:28
Jason, has the sample size now grown to the point where it's quite fair to say that I cannot catch up to even average MLB cheddar?
Jason Mackey
12:29
I don't think it's exclusively fastballs. The bat hasn't been there. Need to go back to the drawing board this offseason or allow Henry to do more of what he's comfortable doing.
PrinceBob

Related to my last question, it seems that simple extending the current CBA with maybe a bit of tweaking isn't an option right now. If that's correct, why not?
Jason Mackey
12:30
It could be. I mean, it's always an option to run it back. But I think there are things certain people are intent on fighting for -- a salary cap being one of them. I think there's more of a split than ever on the issue.

Jason, I realize of course that you are not a certified financial planner, but between me and you, should I hold off on allocating that $3.2M?  I was thinking 50/50 short term bonds and crypto. Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:31
It's been two games. Not reaching any sort of definitive conclusions.

12:31
Jason, how can Mike Tomlin continue to say he doesn't live in his fears? His actions prove over and over that he does.
Jason Mackey
12:31
I agree with you.
Bob Plant
12:31
Jason, they should play Communication Breakdown instead of those other atrocious and ineffective motivating tunes, no?
Jason Mackey
12:31
I dig it. More Led Zeppelin the better. Good Times Bad Times? Babe I'm Gonna Leave You? Lot of good options.
Bud
12:32
Jason, with so many young players on both the O and D line struggling are we to believe that all of the draft picks were for players who underperform or should there be a harder look at the coaches of those positions?
Jason Mackey
12:32
With seven sacks through 2 games and what happened last season, I hope they're looking at a lot of stuff. Coaching. Technique. Players chosen. Literally everything. It hasn't been good enough.
PrinceBob
12:32
I keep reading that in the off season the Pirates will need to improve their hitting and will likely look to add a third baseman and an outfielder who can hit. But give their preference for finding internal solutions if Nick Yorke hits fairly well in the next week would they just give him the third base job next year? It wouldn't be nearly a big enough sample size but it's probably the cheapest way to go and the Pirates being the Pirates, well...
Jason Mackey
12:33
I don't think they would. They know they need more. Not a big enough sample size.
Joel
12:33
Jason, as the Pirates enjoy their annual September collapse, have the odds changed on whether Cherington gets fired or not? What’s your gut sense? And what about Kelly? Hasn’t he been part of the problem for six season as well?
Jason Mackey
12:33
I think Kelly returns, Cherington does not.
PrinceBob
12:33
If Flores looks good in this last week what does that mean for all the other catchers on the Pirate roster?
Jason Mackey
12:34
Nothing. It's the final week. I think it speaks favorably toward him in 2026. He obviously matters. But he's not going to displace either based on one week. It's more the larger portfolio of his work.

Jason, hackers want to know if you are still trying to dig it out of the dirt, or have you given up on beating Starkey 2 and 1 in an epic match at the Mt. Lebo muny?
Jason Mackey
12:34
Ha! Starkey and I both play that course, but we've never played together. We should make it happen.
PrinceBob
12:34
Why do you think track and field isn't a more popular spectator sport in the US outside of in Olympic years? The World Championships are about midway done and you'd barely know it from media coverage. But in Europe there's a lot of coverage, big meets sell out or come close to it even in non Olympic years.
Jason Mackey
12:35
I have no idea, honestly. Just not popular with enough people? I just think football has become so cultural. It's identifiable. You can rally behind teams. There's drama. You can't get that association with track and field.
Joel
12:35
Jason, isn’t the core problem with the Steelers’ defense simply that they’re playing too many guys on the downside of their careers? The defense would be awesome if it were 2020 or 2021, but it’s not.
Jason Mackey
12:37
Eh, maybe. There are a lot of issues, honestly. Could be scheme. Communication is not nuthin'. Execution and winning one-on-one matchups. I don't think the defense is over the hill, though. Cam's a vet. Slay, Watt and Ramsey, too. But JPJ, Benton, Harmon, Payton Wilson, Queen, Herbig ... lot of youth as well.
Robert
12:37
Jason, if given the opportunity, would you try a rock and rye?
Jason Mackey
12:37
Absolutely.

Hi Jason, I think that Drew Allar will cost the Nittany Lions 4 or 5 BIG games this season with his poor play.  If he has a 50% completion rate against the Little Sisters of the Poor he has faced so far this season how will he fair against even slightly above average teams.  He seems to regress instead of getting better. Last year it was all blamed on the receivers (although he did have a generational talent in Tyler Warren) but quarterbacks make receivers great not the other way around. Am I wrong?
Jason Mackey
12:38
Come on. Four or five games? They're not gonna lose four or five games, and Allar isn't going to cost them that. You're wrong. And it's an unnecessarily negative feeling. Do they need him to play better in big games? Absolutely. But he's gonna blow four or five games is a little strong, IMO.
Joel
12:39
By any metric Oneil Cruz is the worst hitter in baseball since June 1st. That is not a small sample size. In July I agreed that he was having too much criticism thrown his way, but now it’s indisputable that he’s doing less with his immense talent than arguably anyone over the past 25 years in PGH sports. What can be done to salvage this guy’s career in a Pirate uniform?
Jason Mackey
12:41
Having a wRC+ of better than 63 would be a start. Yeah, it's been rough. There's too much swing and miss. I'd like to see him shorten up. I think there needs to be some natural maturity that the Pirates probably can't help him with -- growing up. He's been terribly against lefties. You'd hope there's more focus with the outfield and running the bases. I'm not giving up. I believe in him. But there's certainly a switch that needs to flip, to where he won't tolerate anything other than going a million miles an hour toward greatness.

Jason, if the local hockey team somehow finagles their way to GM, would it prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the supreme being has a yinzer weakness?
Jason Mackey
12:41
You're trying too hard. Just ask the questionable in reasonable fashion. My head hurts.
TVC15
12:41
Hi Jason,   Were the Steelers actual "historic" defenses the product of Dick LeBeau's genius and not Mike Tomlin's affectatious gibberish?
Jason Mackey
12:42
They were the product of smart schemes and empowering someone to craft them. I don't know why we can't do that now.
Stash
12:42
Jason, would you listen to any decent offers on OC this offseason? I get the whole avoiding selling low thing, but have you watched him try to play the game?
Jason Mackey
12:42
I would not. I'm riding it out and trying to help him figure it out here.
John

Is this the lowest morale has been across Pittsburgh sports team in recent memory? None of the teams are in danger of competing for a championship any time soon.
