Ha. No, there have been worse pockets, IMO. But it's not terribly optimistic. We need someone to get out in front and actually do something. The Pirates could be that if they spend the right way on bats.

If we continue to give up 31 points per game, what your revised win total for the season?
Jason Mackey
12:43
At 31 points per game allowed? I don't know, 4-13? Won't be many.

I am fearful that we are looking at basically the same outcomes for the Steelers and Pitt football teams. Nothing’s going to materially change until the coaches are replaced. I’d love to see coaches with offensive backgrounds running the show, maybe we wouldn’t have to live with the “let’s punt and play defense” mentality so much. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:44
It's been two games for the Steelers and three for Pitt. I don't think it's enough on either side to identify a season-long trend. But I do think Narduzzi and Tomlin should be criticized for underperformance to this point.

Part 2, if we continue to give up the 31 points a game, and Arch only mildly improves, would we have to give up any draft capital to get Manning in the first round?
Jason Mackey
12:45
Man, you're asking like a three-level hypothetical. There's no logical answer I could give you. As of now, Tom, Arch isn't even coming out. I don't think this year will change his mind.

Hi Jason! What happens when a prospect gets promoted to another level in the minors? Or even after the draft. Do the minor league teams cut players as others come onto the team or is there no real roster limit?
Jason Mackey
12:45
No, they have roster limits. They can be placed on a developmental list. Some are cut. Some are promoted. There's roster management daily for these reasons, as well as injuries.

Why are the Steelers not playing Holcomb more since they need more run stoppers in the game. I like Wilson but he seems a bit skinny and underweight to take on blocks in the run D game.
Jason Mackey
12:46
Don't have a great answer, but I hope it changes Sunday. They need to. Wilson looks overmatched.

Hi Jason - does the typical Pirates' Sept. flameout impact Donnie Kelly's future as our manager?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I doubt it.

12:46
Did you see the Deebo Swinney Press conference?  What did you make of his comments?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I did not see it. I'm sorry.

Will the Steelers focus more on running the ball this week vs last week? Rodgers was getting hit way too often and he will not last the season at this current rate. Warren had a few nice runs, but I thought they gave up on it too early. What say you?
Jason Mackey
12:47
They would like to. They need the offensive line to block. That hasn't been good enough. But, yeah, I think this week would make a lot of sense for them to make it an emphasis and for the line to perform better.

12:47
Have you heard or observed anything in practice to make you think the defensive scheme may be tweaked or will they run out the same D as last week and hope everyone plays a little better?
Jason Mackey
12:47
I have not heard about anything, nor have I see it anything.
Not saying it won't happen. Just saying I usually go down there on Fridays and nobody has mentioned the scheme changing in a big way.

If Konnor Griffin were to be called up today, would he be the Pirates best hitter?  Top 3 at least?  What an indictment of The general manager. There is no way he keeps his job, right?  Offer the suffering Pirates fans some hope to cling to please.
Jason Mackey
12:48
I don't think he's back. And, who knows. Useless thing to worry about -- Double-A results versus the major leagues. But the Pirates offense hasn't been anywhere close to good enough.

Hey Jason, enjoy your work.  To what do you attribute the problems with the Steelers on defense?  players? coaching? scheme?  Combination of some or all?  Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:49
Thanks, Tony. There's no one thing. Not taking advantage of double teams. Getting out-physicaled. Allowing teams to be multi-dimension. There's a bunch to it.

Jason, I know you mentioned finishing a Pens article so if you address my question there please disregard this.  What/whom are you most interested in during pre-season?
Jason Mackey
12:50
All good. Honestly, might be the goalies. I'm big on the young guys -- Murashov, Silovs, etc. And maybe whether Karlsson & Letang can be any different.

If Ben Cherrington is not fired immediately after the season ends, at what point should I start to worry he will be around another year?  One week?  Two?
Jason Mackey
12:50
I think by Tuesday we should know one way or another.
Fire BC
12:50
Do you have any recommendations yet on who should replace Cherington?
Jason Mackey
12:50
One option who would intrigue me: Dayton Moore. Currently an advisor with the Rangers. Still only 58. Built the Royals. Knows small market baseball. Now ex-Rays president Mark Silverman is another one.

Hi Jason, with Peguero’s demotion, do you think he still has a future with the Pirates or is his career with them probably over?
Jason Mackey
12:51
For this year, probably. He'll get another chance in spring, I would imagine. I just think it gets less likely he'll become anything at the big league level. But I wouldn't say it's over.
Termarr

Hey Jason, I believe that I am the TJ person, just an FYI. Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:51
Ah, that makes sense. I hope a bunch of time was saved by not typing that out.
Ryan
12:51
Good afternoon Jason what do you think about the play of Jaylen Warren he has Looked Good Go Steelers
Jason Mackey
12:52
Hi Ryan. Good in the passing game. OK in the running game. I'd like to see him return kicks. But not as dynamic as I would've liked, realizing some of that involves the offensive line as well.
GPT

Sid knows that the Pens are at least several years away from contending. Do you think the one franchise status, ala Mario, is more important than competing for another Cup?
Jason Mackey
12:53
I don't think he does, GPT. Not the vibe I've gotten from being around him. I think he thinks they can be a little like the Capitals. And I don't blame him.

There was an article this AM about trying to sign Konnor to a deal right now. Who in their right mind would ever sign a long-term deal with the Pirates with Nutting and Cherington in charge? I'm sure Skenes cannot wait to take the first flight out when he is eligible for free agency. The ball club will never get out of the cellar unless they spend some meaningful smart money on free agents and that is not happening any time soon.
Jason Mackey
12:53
Valid argument. But the answer to your question would be a guaranteed $90 million or whatever. I haven't read Joe's column because I've had Dubas > P-G video > practice/availability > column writing > and now this.
