I'd be surprised if he missed. Everything I've heard and read said he would be trying to play through it. Maybe just skip practice on Wednesday as a precaution.

Do you attend the Tomlin press conferences?  If so, do you gain any information on what he actually does in his role?  I'm sure you have heard the phrase "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull...well you know the rest.  He sure shows a lot of BS, but I haven't noticed any brilliance in many years.
Jason Mackey
12:26
I've been to them before. I have not gone thus far this year. I struggle with what to do on that. Feels silly to have four people (Gerry, Ray and Brian) there for one man to talk. I tend to center my Steelers time toward later in the week (going tomorrow) and games.
12:27
I get what you're saying, but show me a coach who's actually informative in his dealings with the media. Torts? Hitch? Francona? Aren't many.

if justin fields continues to lead the steelers to wins and they want him to be "the guy" when russell wilson is healthy, do you think they'd consider trading wilson for a #2 receiver?
Jason Mackey
12:27
I think it depends on a lot of things. How's Wilson's calf? How good and assured is Fields? Who's the WR? I also don't see a team giving up a WR who would help the Steelers for Wilson. That seems lopsided.

Did Tomlin just blatantly rip off the old "how the sausage gets made" analogy and try to claim it as his own with his hot dog ingredients gibberish?
Jason Mackey
12:29
Indeed he did. Still thought it was a good line.

Is it too late for the Steelers to correct their talent deficiency at WR?
Jason Mackey
12:29
I don't think so. And you're right. They have one. But that's why you have a trade deadline. I would think/hope that they're making calls now. What we've seen so far isn't good enough.

Jason, if the pirates move on from Shelton (hopefully) - who is on radar to replace him
Jason Mackey
12:30
I'm not sure, Greg. In large part because, as he said, the GM doesn't want to do it. I'd call Francona -- but don't misinterpret that as Tito being on their radar. It's just what I would do. Would imagine they might look at more experienced options out there if they went another direction. Joe Maddon is another I'd consider.

Jason, that comparison running around out there between the Buccos and Milwaukee really hits home, no?
Jason Mackey
12:32
It does. I texted Starkey a little bit ago. I thought he wrote a tremendous column -- and completely fair one -- about the two organizations. It's frustrating. Milwaukee does so much well. And it renders the small-market excuse useless.
(Texted Joe to say how much I loved the column)

Are what constitute a large percentage of your run of the mill dog. For those yinzers watching what they eat.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

Which young pens players who haven’t debuted yet do you expect us to see in Pittsburgh?
Jason Mackey
12:43
Hmm ... good one. Like this. I think Joel Blomqvist gets here in goal. That's an easy one. Rutger McGroarty. Another easy one. Ville Koivunen. Vasily Ponomarev has played two games, so he doesn't count. Sam Poulin has also been in the NHL. Probably about it.

Jason, do you still rock out to the Dead? I remember you used to mention them a lot in your chats and I'm a big fan as well. Their 3/27/93 Albany show - my friend says it is the WORST Dead show of all time, but I think it is like mid. Not bad, not great. Any thoughts on that one? It kind of reminds me of the Steelers offense through the first two weeks.
Jason Mackey
12:44
All the time. I listen to more than the Dead, obviously, but they'll be my favorite band until I die, which hopefully isn't soon. Can't say I've listened to that. I don't listen to much after '91. Just don't like it all that much. Sounds raggedy.

If you were the Pirates GM, what 3 things would you do to try and turn this franchise around?
Jason Mackey
12:45
I would fire the manager and entire hitting staff. ... I would see how much I could get Bob to spend this offseason and buy a legit bat (1B or OF, depending on Reynolds), plus a bullpen piece or two ... And I would also do a deeper dive in why my organization is not able to complete development of young players at the major league level (Davis, Suwinski, etc.)

Jason, I’m kind of liking the first base scenario. Is that wrong?
Jason Mackey
12:45
I need to see way, way more.

Jason, I’m not a big research guy. What do the advanced statistics say about my D? And what can I do to cozy up to the big guy?
Jason Mackey
12:46
It's good enough. -3 DRS. Would like it to be better, but I love the bat. You're my opening day C next year, no questions asked.

Have the Steelers set up B. Jones to fail much in the same way they set up K. Green to fail at Center? Obviously, Jones is a blue-chipper, but not having him play his true position, asking him to platoon, etc. Why not just let the man play LT and allow him to develop naturally?!?!
Jason Mackey
12:47
I agree with that. Now, I'm not saying anyone is blameless here. I wish they would have let Broderick play LT from the jump. I think that would have been smarter, and I wrote that. That said, it's on him as a player to play better. Can't have 3 penalties in 6 plays. That's not the team's or Mike Tomlin's fault.

Terry Bradshaw has acted some in movies, so I'm wondering if there are any current PITTSBURGH pro athletes who you think may make good screen actors after they retire?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Ha. Oh, what a great question. CURRENT athletes ... Sid, no. Geno, no. Maybe Kris Letang. I could see that. ... On the baseball team, Oneil Cruz has the personality. But it would have to be a Spanish-speaking film. ... Not sure I see anyone else, honestly. Football-wise, maybe Cam? Like a jolly/goofy father role?

Jason, our newly acquired right fielder has a cannon. Does that make up for his other defensive deficiencies?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Do you mean Cook or De La Cruz? Serious question. They both throw well. Not always accurately. But they have good arms.
PQ
12:50
Jason, I’ve been given the benefit of the doubt so far, but I need that freaking break out game, no?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Yeah, need to have more tackles than you have. But I don't think we're to the point of NEEDING the breakout game. I thought PQ's quote was perfect. He knows he needs to get back to his previous level. Defense overall has played extremely well, though. Tough to find too much fault.

I am with you 100%. The Dead after Brent does very little for me. Some of the Hornsby stuff is good but Vince destroyed the band in more ways than one.
Jason Mackey
12:51
Agreed. Favorite will always be Pigpen.
Zack
12:51
Here’s hopefully a fun one. What conferences will Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia be in, in 10 years?
Jason Mackey
12:51
I don't think there will be college conferences -- at least not the Big 10, ACC, SEC, etc. -- in 10 years. I'll bet it more resembles the pro/East-West format. And that sucks.

Hi Jason, I was wondering what the Pirates do at shortstop. Do they play IKF there until Konnor Griffin is ready or should they go out and get a legitimate everyday mlb shortstop?
