Hi Jason, why did the Pirates give up on Bligh Madris so soon? He did not even get an entire season under his belt before they DFA'd him. It sure seems like there are other players on the roster that deserved a DFA more than Madris.

I don't have a magic reason to give you, Jack. Obviously they didn't think he was gonna figure it out. Agree that they could have easily DFA'd someone else. But if you don't think someone is going to produce, then they're gonna be a roster casualty.

Why does it seem that Newman has no future with the Pirates?  He plays good defense and has the highest BA on the team. The Pirates need good players and none of the young guys except Cruz look like they will be any better.

I wouldn't base player evaluations on batting average, one. Two, his OPS is under .700. That's easily replaceable, either with a prospect or league-minimum type of player. And his salary will go up next year.

Even if Trubisky is playing well, at what  point in the season do you play Pickett, if the Steelers continue to lose? Thanks Jason.

I would play Pickett against the Jets.

Say what you will about Neal Huntington but he could piece together a bullpen. For analytically minded team that often doesn't give SPs a 3rd crack at a lineup, The Pirates BPs under Cherington have been underwhelming aside from Bednar. Is this a development issue or lack of sufficiently working FA market?

I would say it's some of both. Look at Heath Hembree. That was a whiff on the free agent market. There are also so many dumpster dives; you can't possibly think that's going to improve the bullpen situation. There has also been a lack of pitching talent in Triple-A, which would help. But this new regime didn't draft those guys. You also can't magically develop a player without major league talent -- and, sadly, I think we can say that was the case for some of these guys.

Jason, how confident are you that Malkin will have a good season?  Have you heard if he ok physically?
Jason Mackey

Several folks have talked about his readiness. Certainly looks solid -- like normal Malkin -- from my perch. No issues here. Obviously we'll find out over time, but he has talked about his knee feeling better. I'm not inclined to take issue with it.

Getting rid of Canada now might be a good idea, but who do you replace him with? The replacement is likely to be only interim with the permanent replacement hired off-season. Could they realistically find a top notch OC mid season? Bringing Haley back might be a good idea but I doubt Tomlin would do that.

I don't think they're gonna fire Canada, to be honest. So, probably a moot point. Also not sure if Haley is the answer. Said this earlier, but it amazes me that in the world of offensive coordinators, they can't find one with some ingenuity somewhere?

OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much for participating. Let's do this again next Friday!
