Absolutely not. No way, shape or how. I like the Claypool trade. I think they need to draft better and do a more effective job with free agents. But I'm not trading TJ, no.

At various times throughout their tenures, Rob Manfred, Roger Goodell, Gary Bettman, and Adam Silver have been the targets of intense criticism.  I get that the top guy is always going to be a target when something goes wrong in their sport, and I also understand that each sport has its own particular set of issues, but who do you feel does the best job?  Which one would you fire tomorrow if you had the power to do so?
Jason Mackey
12:40
Man, good question, Drew. ... I think Silver probably does the best job as far as the NBA marketing itself and continually providing entertainment and competition in a capped system. ... I'd probably can Goodell. The NFL's discipline system is insane. There are a lot of good things about the NFL -- the parity, doing things year-round to maintain interest -- but I'm not sure the commissioner is helping more than he's hurting.

According to an interview he gave in Puerto Rico, Roberto Perez is seeking a multi-year contract. Given his injury history, do you see any team taking a chance on him for more than a single season?
Jason Mackey
12:41
I don't know of a professional athlete anywhere who's not seeking a multi-year contract. The difference is those who find them. ... No, I don't see him getting anything more than a one-year deal at a cheap rate. (Sounds like a Pirate already, I know.)

In every sport, when someone needs replaced, you always hear "We just need to execute our plan."  I think that's code for our players are incapable of doing anything other than a single skill.  Which Pittsburgh team does that NOT apply to at this point?
Jason Mackey
12:43
Either my brain is mush or that's a really complicated question. ... I guess the Penguins? Like which team continues to give the same answers and does something else? The Pirates have a version of this, but it involves everything being about development. The Steelers ... who knows what the heck you're gonna get over there.

Mack attack is back! Jason, good to have you back on the Pens beat; always enjoy your stories. does it seem like the team has failed to really develop, or even give a chance, to many of the younger players since Tochett left (Blueger being the one exception)? seems like Sully would prefer an older vet over a hungry youngster
Jason Mackey
12:43
Tough to keep up, I know: I'm actually back on Pirates. Don't blame you, though. Saw Bourque the other night: "Pick a [bleeping] sport," the ol' 29er chided me. I love it. Been a weird succession of events.
12:45
Oh, your question. ... I don't think that's the case. I think it's quality of player. They've mortgaged the future a bunch. I don't think Sullivan is sitting gamebreakers. The thing with the Sheary/Rust/Jake dynamic from years ago: They earned it. Believe me, if Sully had someone like Guentzel to play, he would be playing him. If playing a folding table gave Sullivan a chance to win, he'd do it.

Jason welcome back as pirates reporter pens question when do they win a game again they need to win a game soon
Jason Mackey

Saturday. And thanks.

hey Jason, let’s just address the elephant in the room right off the bat.. how do we feel about pirates World Series this upcoming year?? Been hearing a lot of buzz about it.
Jason Mackey
12:45
Right. Still trying to figure out the exact scope of the parade route. But we have all offseason, right?

12:45
Hi Jason. As an out-of-towner I wasn't aware that you were the Pirates beat man again. I hope you are good with that as you seemed to be very enthusiastic about your at-large role and you did some excellent work.
Jason Mackey
12:47
Thanks, Hunter. Yep, another change. Circumstances dictate. We had DeFabo leave, the strike, Pirates beat open. My old role changed a bunch, for perfectly understandable reasons. But given the outlay of our staff, we needed a Pirates writer, and it just made a bunch of sense for me to go back. Without getting too in-depth, I learned a lot about myself throughout the change. With my family, we learned that we like the structure of a beat. I like having something to call my own. I'm good at owning a beat, so I figured, "Why fight it?" Plus, I missed being warm. :-)

I guess my sports question would be how concerned should we be about the Penguins' slump? It is very disappointing when a team can't come from ahead repeatedly.
Jason Mackey
12:48
It is concerning, for sure. And they've been playing poorly in a lot of ways. However, an NHL season is stupidly long. I'm not concerned big picture. I think they'll turn it around and snap out of this thing soon. This is where goaltending can be huge. Team is struggling? Jarry and DeSmith could help out. Problem is they've both been struggling, too.

if you could go back in time and catch only one of these Dead shows which would it be… Shrine Expo ‘67, Cow Palace (3/23/74) or Cornell (5/8/77)?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Oooh ... love it. I'm going Cornell. Although it's close, because I love good '74 stuff. I could let the Shrine show go. I like 60s stuff, but don't love it.

How’s Crosby doing? Is his wrist of any concern?
Jason Mackey
12:49
He's fine ... at least relative to that.

The Astros' four-man World Series no-hitter left me feeling a little cheated. I guess we are never going to see one man go the distance in that situation during the post-season as long as the pitch counts are the be all and end all.
Jason Mackey
12:50
Nope, never. And it stinks. I hate what happens to pitch counts in the postseason. I get it. But I don't have to like it.

Jason, we’re all for sports owners monetizing our pride of place and tribalism - as long as they share the sentiment and live up to the bargain: to represent the community we love with pride and dignity. The jury is in on the pirates and has been for a long time. Bob Nutting cynically monetizes our fandom while he breaks faith with Pittsburgh and all it means to people across the country. Are there legal options in the framework of MLB to call this the fraud that it is?
Jason Mackey
12:52
Not in my opinion, no. Unless MLB wants to force Nutting to sell. I'm not of the believe that the government can intervene. MLB also independently audits financial documents, so if his books were screwy or he was pocketing funds, I'm pretty sure they would catch it. That being said, they've been so bad under Nutting that I think fans are right to question what's happening here. They would help themselves by disclosing. But I don't see what legal action could be taken here.
The Real TP Hunter
12:52
Which is the more disappointing team at this stage of the football season, Pitt or the Steelers?
Jason Mackey
12:52
Tough one. I'll go with the Steelers just because there are so many flaws with them right now.

Jeff Luhnow was the one largely responsible for building the Astros we are seeing and would still be there except for the scandal. Others who were more closely involved have now been reemployed. Would the Pirates hire him when they realize this management team is not much better than the last one?
Jason Mackey
12:54
I know this will be unpopular, but I have zero expectation that the Pirates plan to move on from the current management team. Nothing against Luhnow, but I think they went into this with Cherington/Williams thinking it would take a while, and it has. If they determine this plan is shot, I'm guessing Luhnow will be doing something else.

12:54
If the Penguins continue to flail around the way they have for the past two weeks, is there really anything that could be done since the team is right at the salary cap limit and it has signed just about every mid-30s age star it could get its hands on to a multi-year contract?
Jason Mackey
12:55
Sure, they could make some moves. Don't know if they would be good or favorable, but they could always trade, say, Marcus Pettersson or Bryan Rust. Maybe Jason Zucker. There's always stuff you can do to get players' attention.

12:55
Hi Jason.  With that being said of you expecting around 72-74 wins next season, do you think a lesser amount would result in a managerial change?
Jason Mackey
12:56
Yeah, I do. And I think it depends on how things go. Like if they start out awful, they could decide to fire him and promote Don Kelly. Important to note: They could. Not they will. ... The inverse, if they start really strong, maybe they extend Shelton. I think the first half or so will tell us a lot.
The Real TP Hunter
12:56
If you were to rank the Big Four U.S. sports by the importance of its championship game, would the MLB World Series rate ahead of the NBA championship at this point? The NFL's Super Bowl has to be the unquestioned No. 1 and the Stanley Cup is No. 4 in the U.S.
Jason Mackey
12:57
I think it depends on where you are. Like, Buffalo, the Stanley Cup is big. Guessing it's that way in Minny, Boston, Detroit, etc. Not sure I feel comfortable ranking any of the second, third and fourth things. Obviously the Super Bowl is No. 1.

Chances that Ke Hayes hits .250 next season?
Jason Mackey

I see Key hitting around .270 next season. Yes, seriously.

Two huge SEC football showdowns this weekend. Who ya got in Tennessee-Georgia and Alabama-LSU? Does it seem possible that Pitt probably should have beaten Tennessee? What a difference two months makes.
Jason Mackey
12:58
I'm taking Alabama and Georgia. It is crazy how close that game was and how much has changed since that time. You're right.
