If Sullivan's contract runs through 2072 he's going to be coaching Sidney Crosby's grandkids, correct?

Haha. I don't know if that actually lines up, but sure.

The current Pirates management team doesn’t seem to be much better than the last one.  I remember that group being called “the Best Management  Team in Baseball”. That team acquired the best player (Reynolds) and the best prospect (Cruz) but not much else.  So, how long  do we give this group before we’ll know if they’re any good?

Couple things, Tom. I think it's apples to oranges in a way. This group has done a full-scale rebuild/blowup, bigger than any in franchise history. That's going to take time. Two, that other group took time, too. Huntington was hired in 2007 and broke through in 2013. Cherington was hired in 2019 and has had three seasons, and we're saying it has taken too long? Doesn't make sense.

Should Hextall be fired for his moves this summer? The revamped blueline is worse. Rutta has been solid but Petry hasn’t been good and Marino has been excellent in New Jersey. Kapanen is a ghost signed for another season at a ridiculous salary and the Carter extension looks worse by the day. Resigning DeSmith looks bad as well with both goalies in the bottom half of the league. When does he get some negative press for these moves?

Holy Lord. Fire everyone, huh? .... It's been 11 games. ... As far as negative press, I don't write about the Penguins much anymore. Basically just as Vensel's backup. Not sure it's my role to take the GM -- whom I've never met -- to task. And I agree some of what you mentioned doesn't look great. That said, let's get a larger sample size here.

Has the front office given up on Swaggerty or were they just looking to get him as many ABs (to make up for the missed time through injury, covid) as possible to see what they have?
Jason Mackey

I hate to say this, but it seems like they've given up on him. How else to interpret their actions? I think we've seen GMBC tends to like his guys more. Guessing they weren't overly impressed with Swaggerty. Weird he never came back. Would imagine they believe they have better OF options available.

WIll spring training 23' be an open audition for the 2 OF spots between Smith-Njigba, Swaggerty, Suwinski, Mitchell, Bae, etc? Do you expect them to sign any veteran OF?
Jason Mackey
1:09
The right one, possibly. I think it's a little bit down the priority list. ... And, to a degree, yes. Although I think they'd probably like to have Reynolds and Suwinski, plus Bae somewhere, even if it's in the infield. Might be a tougher road for CSN, Swag and Mitchell.

Also welcome back to the Pirates beat and thanks for taking questions!

Of course man. Thanks for asking me.

Hey Jason! Was there any ever talk with Claypool to the bears for there inside LB? Seems with might of been better than a number 2 pick when you know what your getting and can use that pick for the OL or DL and can let Bush walk?

Sorry. I'm not close enough to give you an accurate answer on that.

The Steelers are at or near the bottom in every meaningful stat on both offense and defense. Is this the worst team overall they have had since the 1970 merger?
Jason Mackey

I think that might have some recency bias. We're also only halfway through. But if they finish, say, 4-13, I think you would have a pretty strong case.

Regarding the J question.  Why would the other MLB owners want a competent Pirates outfit?  They win games played against the Bucs and Pittsburgh doesn't raise salaries across the board for other teams.  The other owners love the Pirates.

I disagree with that. You don't think owners would prefer all competent teams to drive up gates, money made from jewel events or over league revenue? Them being bad benefits no one.
OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much. Glad to have these back and glad to be back on Pirates. Talk to ya next Friday!
