Gut feeling who will have a better year Endy Rodriguez or Henry Davis?  And w
Jason Mackey
12:27
This is a good question. I'm gonna go with Endy. With the Pirates apparently leaning more trade than anything else, I could see them trying to move Davis and bank on getting something back because of his pedigree. There's no clear path to playing time for either of them because of Joey Bart behind the plate.

Why can’t defenses stop Hurts on the tush push? It seems whenever they try one it’s successful.
Jason Mackey
12:27
Because they have a physical offensive line and an athletic quarterback, and you're only talking about a yard. There's no way to cover every hole. Hurts can find something. Not like we're talking about 10- and 15-yard gains.

Thoughts on the Horwitz/Ortiz deal? I think we sold high on Ortiz but feel like we could have potentially got a better player for that package... would be happy to be proven wrong as Horwitz has a lot of good things in his underlying metrics but it seems like we also bought high on a 27 year old 1B guy who has less than 500 MLB plate appearances...
Jason Mackey
12:30
This has officially become the Spencer Horwitz Chat. I agree with selling high on Ortiz. I just wish they would have shot higher. That package couldn't have landed Ryan Mountcastle or Yandy Diaz? I find that hard to believe. Then again, those guys cost more money. Was it that? I don't know. But I think they needed more of a sure thing than they got. It also worries me that this regime seems to think it can only do things with which it's personally involved. Players they've seen or coached? They're better! Not always.
And, yeah. Horwitz has done some good things. He might pan out. Or he might regress like Suwinski did. I don't like the lack of certainty, again.

Why are so many people so anxious to get Reynolds out of left field? I know the Pirates don’t have a first baseman, but they don’t have other corner outfielders either.
Jason Mackey
12:32
You may be internalizing a fan narrative, for which I can't really answer. The Pirates don't view this as a full-season thing anyway. Honestly, I'm gonna bet it doesn't happen. If it does, it may just be Reynolds there against lefties to get his right-handed bat in the lineup and give him a little break.

With Ortiz traded, will Bubba Chandler be the odds on favorite to be in the rotation?
Jason Mackey
12:32
Depends on how he pitches in spring. It probably improves his chances. But he's gonna have to Jared Jones his way there.

12:32
what are the chances the Steelers lose the next three games and need to beat the Bengals to make the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
12:33
Going from 10-3 to that would be one hell of a collapse. I don't see it happening. Chances not very good.

At the end of your previous chat, you mentioned that you were taking the train from Harrisburg to NYC. Was that your first Amtrak trip? How was it?
Jason Mackey
12:34
It was not my first Amtrak trip, but it'll likely be my last. Cost was way too much. Employees were rude. Parking was absolutely insane. I really like taking trains, but they lost me. There are other ways I'd prefer to spend the P-G's money. Ha.

12:34
A few weeks back, the Pirates promoted John Baker to oversee their performance team. Should they have done this? Did Baker deserve it? What is your judgment of both this move and Baker?
Jason Mackey
12:36
I don't know enough about his new role. But I do have an issue with characterizing this as a promotion. How? It's something completely different. Also, why are you promoting someone where ... the farm system isn't as good as it should be, and development has been the same. It felt like moving someone and trying to go another way, which is fine given what has happened, but now we're promoting after finishing with the same number of wins as the previous year? That's an odd move.
demosthenes98
12:37
In your judgment, of the six arbitration-eligible players to whom the Pirates tendered contracts, which one(s) did not deserve it?
Jason Mackey
12:38
I have no issue with any of the six, honestly: Bednar, Oviedo, Falter, Bart, Holderman and Santana. The only one I could see people protesting is Bednar, but I'm OK with keeping him. He's earned the right to have a crappy year, then try to bounce back from it.

Do the Pirates swing a trade for a proven MLB OF bat now that they got their long term 1B?
Jason Mackey
12:38
I'd sure as heck hope so. They could also just, you know, sign one.
Ryan Graves
12:38
After last night I should probably stay in the press box the rest of my time here in Pittsburgh. You agree ?
Jason Mackey
12:39
Twas not good. But that's a horrible way to spend $4.5 million. Honestly, if the Penguins are going to stink defensively, I might be at the point to keep playing Graves, hope he finds something, then try to get out from under that contract. Sitting him every night only hurts your roster construction.

How great would it be for Hurts to need to come out of the game and KP loses it for the Eagles?
Jason Mackey
12:41
That would be funny, yes. But, honestly, I couldn't care less. If what is public is true and that's how Kenny behaved, that's ridiculous. You think, based on what little you've done, you're entitled to a starting job? Take Justin Fields, the exact opposite. That young man has worked his tail off, done everything right, he's gonna learn here for a year and hopefully go somewhere else and kick butt because he was smart & mature about the whole thing.
More trash
12:41
Horwitz will be another bust. This team would screw up a one car funeral. I would be surprised if they lose at least 100 games next year
Jason Mackey
12:43
I understand disliking the trade. But I don't get saying they'll lose 100 games. That's not gonna happen. On a team that still has Skenes, Jones, Keller, Falter, Oviedo, Chandler, Burrows, Ashcraft and Harrington? Come on. You're just mad because you hate the trade.

The Pirates gave up a real, live, MLB starting pitcher with years of control - for what, exactly?  I don't mind dealing from a postion of supposed strength - but what exactly is coming back?
Jason Mackey
12:44
A hitter with upside and years of control? I don't like it either, but I'm answering your question. They think they got someone with a mix of power, on-base and position versatility. I wish they would have gotten more power, spent money and not given up as much pitching.

Jason what do you think about the play of Russel Wilson he looked good on Sunday against the browns and the previous game against The Bengals it will be a good test for him this week
Jason Mackey
12:45
I think it might be his biggest of his Steelers tenure, Ryan. Said that on First 10 this morning. I thought it took him and the offense some time to warm up sans Pickens. But I also think Russ has directed an offense not seen around here since Ben. I've been impressed, and I'd like to see the Steelers extend Russ.

Why do the Pirates even bother going to the Winter meetings ? They never do anything of note anyway. This Horwitz cat will be more trash. Seems like a waste of time to me.
Jason Mackey
12:45
Devil's advocate: We might not know exactly how a trade will pan out 13 hours later. Just saying. But I get the vitriol. I do.

This Horowitz trade is another example of why Cherrington continues to prove he is not the guy to shepherd this franchise into contention. Way overpaid, he overpaid just with Ortiz who was one of their most consistent starters last year outside of Skenes, let alone throwing in 2 prospects.  Will Nutting realize this at some point or are we doomed to having Cherrington spoil any chance of capitalizing on the lottery ticket that is Skenes?
Jason Mackey
12:46
Yeah, the trades, FA signings and drafts have left a lot to be desired. International, too. Hope I'm wrong. Hope it works. But it doesn't seem like a particularly good trade. Could always change. Man, a lot of Pirates trade questions today.

Is Syd mortal? Was last night a clinic by CO on how to deny zone entry and kill penalties? The Pens looked pretty pathetic. Darren is busy working on Xmas cards, but says hello and to enjoy the holidays!
Jason Mackey
12:48
Thanks, Darren. Yeah, this hasn't been Sid's best stretch. Went from that line producing a ton to being very quiet. Can't imagine he was thrilled being taken off the top power play. Odd situation for the captain. I'd put him on the PP, at the net front. Get him going by tipping pucks. It has worked before.

I put Matt Grzelcyk and Ryan Graves as a defensive pairing last night. What was I thinking ? Was I drunk or something ?
Jason Mackey
12:48
I don't know, man. I heard when you multiply two negative numbers, the result is positive. (It wasn't last night.)

Regardless of the difficulty of the schedule for the Steelers, I find it ridiculous to have to play 3 games in 11 days. That’s just a recipe for injuries right before the playoffs. I get their opponents have the same challenge so it’s not unfair from that perspective. I think the league continues to show that it’s “player safety” line is just lip service.
