I don't see why they can't add both Machado and starting pitching, because I don't believe any starter is going to be getting Scherzer money. It will be very interesting to see how they approach the possibility of Machado given the performances of both Andujar AND Didi Gregorius. They can probably trade one of them for pitching if they sign Machado, which isn't to say that it's necessarily their best move.

Nelson Cruz has hit 335 homeruns since before (key word) his age 29 season.  He hit 22 before that.  Anyone come to mind as such a “late blooming” career as a power hitter?

I did a quick Play Index thing of players with at least 200 HR from age 28 onward (where Cruz has 335) to see who had fewer than 22 beforehand and there are 12, including Hall of Famer Earl Averill (who didn't make his MLB debut until age 26), Steve Finley, Ken Caminiti, Edgar Martinez, Raul Ibanez, Brady Anderson, Matt Stairs.

Regarding Andruw:  It seems like a guy who was the consensus best defensive center fielder in at least fifty years and who also hit 434 home runs was better than a significant amount of guys in the Hall of Fame.

Which two announcers would you most want to see square off against each other... say in a charity boxing match?

Smoltz and Buck.

Why have so many people been up in arms about McCutchen having to shave? It's a policy like any other workplace policy; I can't have a beard either. Most importantly, McCutchen doesn't (outwardly) seem bothered by it. So who cares?

Facial hair policies are the instruments of fascism.

And on that note, thanks for stopping by this afternoon! Too many great questions to get to, so maybe one or two of them will be the springboard to an article in the near future.
