I think it's obvious the Padres have an outfield logjam. They need to work that out, presumably trading some outfielders for pitching. Can see them targeting interesting starters in their post-hype phase
10:02
Daniel Norris, Dylan Bundy, maybe Lucas Sims or Cody Reed -- strikeout starter options who aren't out of hope
10:03
The Padres are at a point where they should begin consolidating. They're going to have some manner of 40-man roster crunch otherwise. But there's moving forward, and there's being over-aggressive. No reason to do the latter

Does Jones, Marsh, Suarez and 17 yo lotto ticket get Realmuto?
Jeff Sullivan
10:05
No, but they wouldn't angrily hang up the phone

10:05
If you were AJ Preller how would you approach this offseason if ownership was making a push to try and make the playoffs this year?
Jeff Sullivan
10:05
I'd calmly remind ownership the big-league roster lost 96 games
10:06
Absolute best-case scenario, the Padres are a fringe 2019 contender for the wild card

Do you think David Freese really couldn't get more than 1 year 5 mil on the open market?
Jeff Sullivan
10:07
Last time he was out there, he got 2yr/$11m as a semi-regular. Now he's a platoon player and he's two years older than he was
10:08
If he likes LA, I don't know why he'd subject himself to the market for the sake of maybe getting an extra $500,000

Tell Appleman to you guys the week after the world series off of chats!
Jeff Sullivan
10:08
I like chats! Chats are easy!
10:09
Live game chats are not easy. Regular reader chats are enjoyable
And this is much simpler than writing a damn article

When does the team that trades for Realmuto sign him to an extension?
Jeff Sullivan
10:10
After this season

If you could know any one statistic about your own life (e.g., number of hours spent thinking about volcanoes, number of miles hiked), what would it be?
Jeff Sullivan
10:11
Ratio of lives I've made better to lives I've made worse
Nick Mar - Cake is Good
10:12
Will Sheryl ever do a legal chat? There are tons of questions I have for her.
Jeff Sullivan
10:12
Good question! But considering she has a real, you know, legal job, the timing probably isn't good for a regular chat slot

Cubs payroll stay under $245m this year?
Jeff Sullivan
10:14
Yes
Hey offseason its me ya boy
10:14
Odds Bryce Harper goes Kevin Durant and signs for league minimum with the Red Sox?
Jeff Sullivan
10:14
I don't think I need to answer this question

Regarding the great tank debate: Has there been any research into how tanking teams payroll increases when the rebuild is "complete"? Do teams generally save those dollars and go-big or is it owners hoarding a few extra bucks and then returning to their "normal" salaries when competitive?
Jeff Sullivan
10:16
Previously the Astros had a payroll high of $103 million. Mostly spent $70 - 90 million. In 2017, opening-day payroll jumped to $124 million. This year, it jumped to $160 million
10:17
The Cubs used to spend about $130 million. From 2016 - 2018, they went to $172 million, $172 million, and $182 million
Next year will be even higher
Limited sample to this point, and there are countless other factors, but the Astros and Cubs have both spent as the winning has demanded it
Southern Bleacher Bum
10:19
Where do you see Addison Russell landing if the Cubs move him?
Jeff Sullivan
10:19
Could see the Tigers, since they don't have a good shortstop and they already spent last spring defending the signing of Derek Norris
Then there's the Marlins option, as they might be willing to risk the shortcut to a potential core player
10:20
Won't be a good look for the acquiring team, but I'm not convinced there's any evidence the public actually holds teams accountable for these things long-term

Which injury-plagued player would you be most intrigued about seeing what would have happened if he had stayed healthy?
Jeff Sullivan
10:20
The answer is always Ryan Anderson
10:21
33% strikeouts as a 20-year-old starter in Triple-A in 2000. 6'10, reached the upper 90s
That was Hall-of-Fame talent in an unsustainable body

Would you rather sign Lucroy or McCann as a low cost catcher option?
