Would a top RP making $20M per year be an overpay? If they're gonna top out around 2.5 WAR then it seems like the deal wouldn't even have a chance to give any surplus value.

The surplus value mainly comes from the chance to leverage that arm in the playoffs. That player would be of no use to a non-contender but no one gets more extra value in the postseason than a high-leverage reliever

I see it as a protective measure. Helps keep a young player from being overwhelmed, and you can ease them in over a few years

From an analyst standpoint, rebuilds are always fun, but thinking in terms of how fans feel, it's gutting to see a team blow it apart before it's actually bad. I'd hate to be a White Sox fan right now
