Following up, if you think ALE >= ALW, is that new since the soggy arm? Or do you really believe that a strong division can "beat up on itself" enough to let two weaker teams from other divisions sneak into the wildcards? I've always assumed that's a fallacy -- do you know if anyone's ever studied it?

Strength of schedule effects are real. Now, I don't think the bottom of the AL West is *bad*, but I could see it being worse than the bottom of the AL East. The most important thing here is that I just see a huge clump of teams within a few games of one another for the wild card slots. I like the M's and Rangers, but it would take almost zero convincing for me to switch one or even both of those
