Last week you said kyle seager was having a bad season. I'm curious why you think that? His savant page is pretty red and he's top 10 in a bunch of hard hit categories, what am I missing?
Kevin Goldstein
12:02
Hi everyone and welcome to the week. Let's try to make it a good one. Did I say that about Seager? If I did, it was wrong. It's not bad, It's good, it's not great, but it's solid. I wonder where Seattle sits in terms of picking up that option . . . .

CJ Stubbs has garnered some praise and is set to start in AA this season. Do you think he can put himself on the prospect radar?
Kevin Goldstein
12:02
Certainly as a blip. Not some super bright one, but he's got some real power and you don't need a ton of offense if you can catch.

While the Mariners have been competitive early, they can't hit. How long can they keep trotting out the likes of Sam Haggerty (.582 OPS) and Taylor Trammell (.622) before they have to give Kelenic a shot?
Kevin Goldstein
12:02
Not very long.

Hey Kevin, thanks for the chat. As you transition back to watching live games, do you anticipate any sort of adjustment period for you personally? ie "rust" on the scouting eye that'll need to be shaken off.
Kevin Goldstein
12:03
I don't THINK so, but we'll see. May 12 is my two weeks out date, and I look forward to getting to some Midwest League action (or whatever the hell they are calling it now) to start.

If John Means keeps dealing this year, how big a return could the Orioles get at the deadline?
Kevin Goldstein
12:04
Has has three more years of control . . . why trade him now?

If you were in the Yankees front office, how would you alleviate this Gary Sanchez situation? It’s clear the pitchers prefer throwing to Higgy and he’s not a total zero offensively. Add in the fact that they have a suitable backup at the alt site in Chirinos and I’d be looking to dump Sanchez. Do you agree with that assessment? Are there any teams that would be interested in trying to rehabilitate Gary at ~5 mil for the rest of the year with the upside of having him next year too if he figures it out?
Kevin Goldstein
12:05
I think there would be, and if I was another team I'd want to see him as a mostly DH/occasional catcher.
Brian
12:05
What is you’re initial impression of Chris Rodriguez? An organization as pitching starved as the angels have to try him in the rotation next year right?
Kevin Goldstein
12:06
I'd keep him in the pen. Real power guy without a lot of polish to his game and better to let him just let it fly in short stints. Feels like he'd be a five-and-dive guy at best in a starting role.
Peter
12:06
Do you see Tejay Antone as a reliever (maybe a Josh Hader role) or starter long term?
Kevin Goldstein
12:07
I think he at least deserves a chance to start and play it from there.
Nico

Do you expect any of the Arizona OF's of the future to make an impact this year? I gather Robinson's visa issues mean probably a no for him, but Alek Thomas starting at AA.
Kevin Goldstein
12:07
I don't think they will be in any rush. They're better than expected, but they're not going to catch the Dodgers or the Padres.
Ryan
12:07
Do you expect Emerson Hancock to experience a velocity increase similar to Gilbert/Kirby? Seems like the norm in Seattle these days.
Kevin Goldstein
12:08
Feels dangerous to assume that Player C will start throwing harder just because Player A and Player B have.
Mike
12:08
What are you expecting out of Daniel Lynch tonight? Do you think he can succeed right away at the mvl
Kevin Goldstein
12:09
I think you'll see a fastball-heavy attack. I wish I felt better about his secondary pitches. They're not bad as much as they are all solid average -- I just wish there was a go-to offering in there. I think he'll be fine. Not amazing, but fine.

If a pitcher has a fantastic performance against the Detroit Tigers.. does it really count
Kevin Goldstein
12:10
I mean, yes it helped that it was against Detroit, but Kluber still looked really good yesterday.
Alex
12:10
Do you still have hope in Nick Senzel or David Dahl's bats as post-hype former top prospects?
Kevin Goldstein
12:10
Not really, no.

12:11
who is the least punk mlb player? Bauer? Paul Goldschmidt(whom I adore)?
Kevin Goldstein
12:11
Madison Bumgarner?
JH
12:11
As you work more with Eric, have you noticed prospect archetypes that you gravitate toward that he doesn’t? Or vice versa?
Kevin Goldstein
12:11
We certainly have our own biases. I do gravitate towards contact and swing decisions a little more than he does.
Carlton
12:11
Does Cristian Javier have No. 3 or better potential?
Kevin Goldstein
12:12
Yup. Probably No. 3, and that's really good!

The Astros have seemingly done a great job developing young under the radar Latin American pitching while you were there, (Javier, Valdez, Urquidy, Paredes, Abreu, Garcia, etc.) was there something that set the Astros apart scouting or developmentally, or was that just a nice run?
Kevin Goldstein
12:13
They were on the forefront of using data in the international realm, and former director Oz Ocampo (now with the Pirates) did a fantastic job identifying guys who could improve by focusing on athleticism and good deliveries.

Any MiLB assignments stick out as TOO aggressive? CJ Abrams Double-A might be tops for me.
Kevin Goldstein
12:14
I keep hearing about aggressive assignments and if tons of assignments feel aggressive does that just mean the balance has changed?
Animals
12:14
Weird question: I notice my dog takes very efficient paths to catching tennis balls. Have non-human animals every been studied for the applicability of their actions to baseball or other sports?
Kevin Goldstein
12:15
You win weirdest question so far. And not that I know of . . .
Doc
12:15
Josh Rojas is putting a nice stretch together here....is he a player?
Kevin Goldstein
12:16
He can hit, there are plenty of things to believe in as far as the bat goes. He's one of those weird guys who can play a lot of positions, but none of them very well....
