What happened with Luke Heimlich? Do you think someone signs him as a UDFA after Oregon State is done?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:36
I would guess no, but some scouts were really surprised he didn't go in the 4th-10th round area, so don't have a great sense for his market now.

Kevin Smith has looked VERY good all year and hasn't lost a step after his A+ promotion. Do you see him as a big mover on offseason prospect lists? Thanks!
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:37
Saw him briefly last week and he's really shortened up the swing from college. He's fine but not great at SS. One scout compared him to Jordy Mercer, who has had a nice run of being a 45 or 50 FV. That would be a very nice find in the 4th round.

Loaisiga looked good in his debut. You see anything to change his scouting report?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:39
The CH was more of a sometimes pitch to the point that we thought he'd fit in relief and end up not using it much, but it flashed above average at times. So seeing it be good multiple times in the bigs was encouraging.

Have you heard anything about my signing bonus?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:39
Heard it'll probably be a little overslot
Matt
12:39
Is Matt McLain guaranteed to sign? The Dbacks used 500k to sign Blaze Alexander and went overslot on Kelly and Thomas which used up a lot of savings from other picks.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:40
Wouldn't say guaranteed bc you never know but sounded very likely just after the draft and teams usually don't lock up other overslot guys if the first pick isn't done.

Not sure if you've had the chance to scout him yourself, but what seems to be the industry consensus scouting on George Valera's tools?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:41
I saw him as an amateur and Eric saw him in extended. Very loose swing with above to plus power. I saw more of a LF type but Eric said he looks more athletic now than when I saw him a year ago, which isn't that uncommon when kids are that young.

Any idea what was wrong with Joey Wentz? It seems odd that there's absolutely no news on what the injury was. Anything to be concerned about long term you think?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:42
Didn't hear anything specific but wouldn't assume it was an injury, his delivery got out of whack and he walked a bunch of guys so I assumed it was some IP management and getting him back on track outside of game environments.

Is Stuart Fairchild legit or old for his level? Scouting the stat line seems like he is a solid power / speed combo. Can you foresee a promotion after the ASG?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:44
He's a good player, has above raw and defense, but the swing is a little grooved, so the question was how much contact and game power there would be. The K rate as a 22 year old in Low-A isn't the best.

12:44
Thinking about the Herrera trade, I am curious about trade returns. Is there a point system teams use like the NFL draft? Is it mostly just precedence? I think you and Eric should come up with a quantifiable way to evaluate trades. Like maybe projected WAR to prospect FV or ranking or something like that.

Any news on Tyler Kolek?  Will we ever see him sniff the majors at this point?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:45
Heard the stuff is still very good, but scout that saw him recently isn't enthusiastic about the outlook

Is Mike Siani roughly equal in value to what Trammell was for the Reds in 2016? What kind of upside does he have?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:47
Nope. Trammel was a 70 runner elite athlete with power and contact skills that you had to project a bit and it's gone better than many expected. Siani is a good CF with some contact and power but nothing elite. Still plenty good, just not Trammell.

Going to try to catch a couple Cape Cod League games. Best place to catch a game?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:48
Chatham or Orleans from my looks

Is Bobby Witt Jr. the clear front runner to go 1st overall right now? If so, is there much of a gap between him and whoever would be 2nd?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:50
I'll probably write something longer about this soon, but no. The 2019 prep class looks down a lot from 2018 and sounds like 2020 is also much better. Witt has the same tools but swung and missed a lot at PG National, so I'm curious to see how he performs the rest of the summer, since he hadn't had that issue before. I'd say SS Bryson Stott from UNLV is the favorite right now, but he's on Team USA and they start playing in a few days, so I'd like to see that team before we start lining guys up, since there's a lot of info coming in over the next few weeks.
12:51
Quick 2019 prep update
12:52
SS CJ Abrams (GA) and SS Bobby Witt (TX) look like the top 2 guys still, RF Riley Greene (FL) and 3B Rece Hinds (FL) are probably the next two bats.
12:53
On the pitcher side, RHP Brennan Malone (NC) is tops right now, RHP Matthew Allan (FL), LHP Hunter Barco (FL) and RHP Quinn Priester (IL) are the next three for me at this point.

Which small school kid has the chance to be this year's Swaggerty in the 2019 draft?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:53
Well no one knew Swaggerty's name until Team USA and they don't start for a few days, so ask me in a few weeks.

I went and saw a minor league game with Seth Beer the other day.  He was called out looking twice, grounded into a force once, and was HBP another time.  He played left field and had one single ball hit to him the other night.  I guess my question is, how do you scouts deal with nights like that when you see almost nothing?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:54
Go back the next day lol that's about all you can do. And go to BP and/or infield.

Who's most worth a pickup in dynasty: Kristian Robinson, Julio Rodriguez, Ronny Mauricio, or George Valera?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:57
We'd probably go with Robinson but these questions are notoriously hard to answer without knowing more
Josh
12:58
What’s the word on Jerrion Ealy? Famous because of the two-sport pedigree, or a guy? Any chance he signs?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:59
Probably the next prep hitter if I extended that list, big time athlete but the hand load is kindy funky so need to see more ABs to see how it plays against velo

12:59
The biggest criticism of the Giants was that they didn't take upside with guys like Bart and Hjelle, but it seems to me that none of the top 5 prospects (after Mize) really had big upside when compared to drafts of the past.  Is this fair?
AvatarKiley McDaniel

Fans are too obsessed with the concept of upside anyway. Cameron talked a lot about how we don't even really know what any given players upside is anyway, which I agree with. We use it since scouts do to speak about physical tools, but we realize it doesn't mean as much as most fans think it does. Like it's a good pick because a guy is an 80 runner with an 80 arm and 60 raw power but has never played in a game before...that's the logical extreme of that obsession.

Thoughts on Adam Kloffenstein? What's his ceiling A mid-rotation guy? He seems pretty filled out for a HS player st 6'5 220, so I'm wondering how much more projection or velocity there still is left.
