There's some and he's really loose and athletic, one scout told me he thinks he'll throw 100 in a couple years. Yeah mid rotation upside.

I've had a breakout season so far. Am I basically Robbie Ray, or just an interesting arm who's had a good 1st half?

Fine big leaguer but nowhere near that good. Some smoke and mirrors early on that's starting to level out.

The Rangers are apparently not having any of their top draft picks who were high school pitchers throw any innings until Instructional League, so they can focus on strength, conditioning, and recovery from the high school season.  Isn't this a bit of an overreaction to the concerns about strain on arms?

If none of them get hurt for three years is it then a good idea? There's so little actionable evidence in this arena, I don't laugh at almost any approach.
If some team dips all their pitchers upside down in a pool before every start then none of them get injured...I'm pretty sure there's no correlation there but I'd look into it.

Based on just hit and power tools where would you rank Andrew Vaughn among college bats for the 2019 draft? Is he capable of playing any other position (outfield?) than first base?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:07
Just 1B, R/R, not a great athlete and hasn't performed in the 7 games I've seen but his numbers are obviously insane. He's a little ways down the list but probably on the first day if he keeps doing this. The college bats are crazy deep for 2019. On our unpublished internal 2019 list, the top 16 college players are all hitters and all top 2 round types.

You guys gave Triston Casas a future 80 raw power and all the reports were the Red Sox we’re infatuated with the EVs he was putting up. Do you know what range they were in?
AvatarKiley McDaniel

He posted some in the 105-110 area last summer if I'm remembering correctly, possibly higher than that. These continue to rise with age, too.

Higher upside; LUTZ or Joe GRAY?

LUTZ

To piggyback (I'm a piggybacker oday I guess) on the losing weight question - Is that the same for pitchers as well?  Forrest Whitley lost weight and is dominant, do you think something similar could happen with Weathers?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:11
Sure, I mean it's possible every player could lose weight and that could make them better, but there's also some Prince Fielder/Sabathia/David Wells types that appear to be better with that type of physique, so it's all player-specific
.....

but good too know you wont actually address the complaint

Kinda limited by the questions I get in this free baseball chat, bro. But on the bright side your aggression is very off-putting.

Is AJ Reed doomed to break the PCL home run record?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:13
His name was used as a comp on a player in the 2018 draft class and it was not meant as a compliment

How many MLBers have 80 PV?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:14
Usually 1-3, maybe 4 per position.

Why don't we ever talk about current MLB players on the 20-80 scale?  It would help put prospects in better context.
AvatarKiley McDaniel

We will be doing this as well

It wasn't my complaint, but I think the previous poster was implying that Meg and Jeff are very Mariners-centric in their chats (as you might expect them to be). People blast Dan with Orioles questions, and Travis still answers a lot of Pirates inquiries as well. This is all expected. I think the previous poster was suggesting that Dave and Eno did a really good job of answering questions from around the league.

That's fine and also kind understandable if those are the areas those writers are more knowledgable about and/or the people that read them lean more toward being interested in. I don't think writers here other than me/Eric know much about the sort of prospects you guys like to ask about, so these will be the only two chats with prospect stuff and for that reason, the questions tend to lean heavily that way. About 25 of the 30 orgs don't have questions in the queue about their MLB teams, so I can't really spread it around that much, but ask a compelling question that I have thoughts on and I'll answer it.

What is the earliest age that scouts pay attention to US born players? I would assume that the best 10 to 12 year old players are not often the best 16 year olds
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:19
They are not. Usually HS sophomore is about the time when players are starting to commit to d1 schools and starting on varsity and it's easy to monitor a promising kid that's on a team with a good senior. Anything before that is pretty unusual, in part because there's so much that can physically change that it's usually a waste of time.
1:20
I first saw Nick Gordon as a HS soph when his team had Walker Weickel, Jesse Winker and Connor Lien as seniors. There were tons of scouts at those games and we all knew Gordon would be really good but even he got twitchier over the next few years

Is Pedroia an apt comp for Keston Hiura?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:22
Pedroia is generally not a good comp for literally any ballplayer

Can Jordan Groshans stick at SS like other recent big SS (Corey Seager) or is the range just too light? Could he be a plus defender at 3B?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:22
More avg to a little above at 3B

Are MLB guns generally hot? Have you seen large discrepancies in what the media reports a guys throws rather than what you've seen on your own gun?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:23
MLB ones are usually fine since a lot of writers cite Statcast and many stadiums just use Trackman/Statcast in the stadium
Minor league and college ones range from pretty good (U of Florida) to totally useless and regularly off by 6-8 mph.
