Steele if you have a championship window in the next couple of seasons; Skenes if you’re digging your way out.

Thoughts on Max Meyer contributing this season. Thanks
Nicklaus Gaut
11:08
Big fan of Meyer and possible opportunities in the rotation this season. Elite stuff and is 18+ months out of TJ. I wouldn’t expect a ton of IP even in a best-case but I’d bet on the talent in the long-term.

Whose 3rd base void looks like a better gamble - that of the Tigers (Urshela, Vierling, McKinstry) or the Mariners (Rojas, Urias, Moore)? Do you see anyone emerging as a roster worthy option? Thanks
Nicklaus Gaut
11:09
I like the Detroit situation more but don’t think any of them will rise to more than that of a couple-week fill-in type of fantasy asset.

AL only keeper league. In Oakland, Bleday at $2 and Butler at $5. Who’s starting on opening day and either worth keeping?  Thx
Nicklaus Gaut
11:09
It'll be Bleday for starter and I think he’s got some sneaky upside - particularly as a two-buck chuck

Wilyer Abreu, Caminero and Manzardo making opening day roster?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:10
Wilyer Abreu has the best shot - Manzardo and Caminero seem almost certain to head to the minors.

AL only league. Going to need some late $1 SPs. Thoughts on the Oakland, ChiSox, and KC rotations. Anyone worth targeting?  Thx
Nicklaus Gaut
11:10
I’m not touching the CHW rotation but Wood/Stripling will have some streaming appeal, as well as Brady Singer.
11:11
"Should have some streaming appeal" should be on Alex Wood's tombstone

for a standard 5x5 PLUS OBP/TB, QS/HLD, whats your favorite prospect for H2H league (decent production early, but ready to help win a playoff in Sept)

thank you for the chat

It’s Langford by a lot for me out of that group - best combo of early playing time/OBP monsterousness

for a league with pure HLDS, whats your favorite late round flyer
I found last year I focused on HLDS candidates early, and it totally burned me, ended up just using waiver wire
Nicklaus Gaut
11:12
I don’t know what your league will consider late-round but Yennier Cano and Ryan Pressly are my faves by a lot for Holds - combo of closer-level talent with locked-in high leverage roles on really good teams. Also - J. Adam, M. Brash, H. Harvey, and B. Abreu.
I play in an RP only league so I'm used to Holds-hunting ; )
Bored with friends
11:13
I’ve been playing in a family and friends league for the better part of a decade now, and despite the postseason luck of the ‘91-‘05 Braves, I’ve been fairly dominant and am starting to get bored by the competition. I’d like to try a more competitive (and perhaps higher stakes league) but I have no idea where to look for such things. Any advice on that? Also, can you (roughly) qualify what sort of quality-of-competition difference I can expect in stepping up from a league of active and engaged but not fantasy-immersed baseball fans to whatever you suggest?
Nicklaus Gaut

NFBC was my answer when I had the same question years back - the options can seem intimidating but they also have leagues as low as $50. There is definitely a jump in competition but don’t just assume that everyone in your league is going to be some monster - I do a lot of them and there are PLENTY of jokers that make me say “But why?!?” multiple times a draft. The biggest change is the 2-catcher format but personally, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, particularly right now with the position being so strong. Besides that, I would just recommend doing the league size you’re used to and not just jumping into 15-teams if you haven’t before…The difference in 15-team (with 2 C and 5 OF) vs 12-team and below was one of the biggest adjustments I had to make.

Thank you for the chat!  10 team AL only standard roto 5x5 auction with $260 budget, 15% inflation. I can keep 3 of the following: B Naylor 9, L O’Happe 5, S Bieber 8, E Duran 1, M. Semien 30, C Javier 7. What would be your choices?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:14
Semien, Bieber, Javier

In head to head points format with 9 pitchers slots, what is your recommended split of starting pitchers and relievers?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:15
This answer isn’t great but it really depends on your scoring set. In some leagues, the RP scoring is so low compared to SPs that your split between the two can go way up.
11:16
I do custom rankings for point leagues (and roto) over at RotoBaller and have seen tons of different scoring configurations - estimating a pitcher split is really tough without having the scoring in front of me. But 6/3 or 7/2 is a decent starting point.

Any chance Rockies 2b B. Rodgers puts “ it all together “ this season and is fantasy relevant- or has that ship sailed? Appreciate you -
Nicklaus Gaut

oh my god, he's so annoying - says the guy who's had him a deep dynasty for way too long
No, I don't think he'll actually put it together. He's too intent on hurting me.
help me pick my keepers
11:18
Head to head points league. Need some help picking keepers. For batters we track - HR/RBI/Runs/SB/OBP. who would you keep. (it's ok to say neither)

Tyler Stephenson or Keibert Ruiz
Willy Adames – Dansby Swanson – Vaughn Grissom
Nolan Jones or Byron Buxton
Byron Buxton or Jorge Soler

For pitchers Wins/Strikeouts/ERA could you rank the following players, I can keep 10 of them.

Triston McKenzie
Shane Bieber
Patrick Sandoval
Reid Detmers
Edward Cabrera
Griffin Canning
Baily Ober
Emmet Sheehan
Cristopher Sanchez
Josiah Gray
Nathan Eovaldi
Erick Fedde
Nestor Cortes
Michael Kopech

your methodology

Our league has 40 man rosters and we keep 32.  The cost of trades is very high so rostering prospects and waiting is the best play.  When you evaluate minor leaguers for your rosters what are some of the stats or traits you look for with hitters and pitchers.
Nicklaus Gaut
11:21
K-BB% remains one of the best foundational stats for pitchers, majors or minors. But I also keep an eye on players with a high SwStr% that has a K% that hasn't caught up to it yet.
11:22
Max Clark is a potential monster.

11:22
The options available to me for my first pick this year in a dynasty keep forever league will likely be Max Clark, Matt Shaw, Ethan Salas, Sam Basallo, and Josue De Paula.  Anyone stand out to you in this group?
Nicklaus Gaut

Max Clark - see; potential monster from above

The hit tool is just so forking excellent.
