Hi Everybody!
No time for pranks, lets go

Any closer jobs looking shaky already? Cincy? St Louis? Philly? What's up in Millawahkay?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:01
Cincy: Diaz has a very long leash, I wouldn’t stress about one bad outing.
STL: The optimist can say it was just one bad game against a nightmare lineup - but also, I completely avoided Helsley during draft season and have 4-5 Gallegos shares due to a lack of faith. I think the Cardinals (really) prefer to have Gallegos as the high-leverage fireman but Helsley will force their hand if he keeps giving up bombs.
11:02
PHI: No worries, for now - Alvarado may have gotten lit up (that’s going to happen to a lot of people facing ATL ; ) but they went right back to him for their next opportunity.
MIL: It’s Abner’s job until he completely tanks or Williams comes back. Was happy to snag him in TGFBI last night.

Jack Flaherty, yay or nay?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:03
Yay
Flaherty was absolutely lights out in Spring and promptly carried it over into the season (even if it was against the White Sox of Despair). Velo is good, stuff looks sharp. Probably still not a threat to consistently go over 6 IP but that’s kind of always been the case.

I play in an AL-only, 10- team 5x5. Our draft is done, so assume the top players are already gone. Where should I be looking for SBs, meaning someone whose playing time and SBs might increase as the season progresses?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:05
Kyle Isbel (needs to keep playing every day), Jorge Mateo (needs injuries), Wilyer Abreu (needs to stop whiffing at everything), Jon Berti (needs Oswaldo Cabrera to turn back into a pumpkin and then just wait for the other brittle Yankees to inevitably start dropping body parts).
Cito's Mustache

I suddenly find myself in an 8-team league (H2H points, 25-man rosters, weekly FAAB bids) after 2 managers dropped out last minute. We draft Monday night. Generally speaking, should drafting or FAAB strategy change much in shallower formats? Since we have $0 bids maybe be more aggressive earlier in the season on wire? Appreciate your time, Nick.
Nicklaus Gaut
11:05
I would bump up my “stars” budget quite a bit and not stress too much about the cheap “duds” you end up rostering.
11:06
With things getting that shallow, the wire is always going to be chock full of good options - I’d recommend loading up on some prime pieces now, knowing you’ll be able to fill in any big holes with good players later.
And thank you - I appreciate you coming by!
Question Mark
11:06
Pittsburgh seems to have a plethora of great young pitching. Other than Skenes..how good are the next group of young pirate hurlers?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:07
Outside of Jared Jones, I’m not super optimistic. To be fair, I’ve been making jokes about their (lack of) pitcher development for years. But their organization remains littered with failed “next big things” like Roansy Contreras, Luis Ortiz, and Quinn Preister, while their biggest success is rotation “ace”, Mitch Keller and his +4 ERA.
I love Jones, and Skenes obviously has nasty potential but I won’t start believing in Pittsburgh’s starter development until they actually do it successfully a couple of times.
11:08
Okay, fine, one joke in the name of holiday spirt:
What’s the quickest way to get a Pirate to the All-Star game?
Trade him to Tampa

Does the acquisition of Juan Soto make the Yankees the favorite in the AL East?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:09
I still liked Baltimore more even before the Cole injury but certainly without him - still can’t believe they didn’t sign another SP. And while the offense looks great now, it might look substantially less injury alarm clocks start going off.
I still like them for a Wild Card, though.

Hello fellow kids!

tl;dr I'm super young
Michael
11:10
All of my pitchers so far are accumulating negative stats and Alexis Diaz has been mentioned as an underperformer. Do I change out Diaz, Ober, and others?   Also, was Jackson Holliday worth a 13th round pick in a keeper league? I’m looking for help later this season and a keeper for next.
Nicklaus Gaut
11:10
HOOOLLLLLDDDDD - I know it sucks, I really do. But you can’t do any overhauling after a few games…Trust me; I wanted to punt Bailey Ober into the damn sea - but we gotta hold the line and trust the process.
11:11
And yeah, I think Holliday is a great asset - you might not get the 500 PA he deserves but they can only hold him down for so long.
Help please
11:11
Hey Nicklaus, thanks for the chat. 11 team, AL only, OBP 5X5 league. I spent most of my $ early and ended up with Jared Walsh, Matt Vierling and Andy Ibanez as my 1st, 3rd basemen and CI. I will definitely be scouring the slim free agent and waiver wires, but do you see any upside to any of the three?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:11
You’re welcome!
11:12
Vierling probably has the most upside but would need an injury to realize it. Ibanez is usable, in theory, but replacing Walsh would be my priority. Nate Lowe will eventually make his playing time go poof and even if Walsh kept playing, that OBP is just going to kill you.
hire and fire?
11:12
I picked up Jon Berti, figuring he'd hit better and get more playing time than Oscar Cabrera. Lo and behold, Cabrera is hitting like a young Miguel Cabrera, and Berti has 4 ABs in four games. Time to panic about Berti playing semi-regularly?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:12
Ehh, not yet - Cabrera will turn back into Cabrera soon enough.
Scrub catchers
11:12
How would you rate these end-of-draft catchers as hitters: Connor Wong, Freddy Fermin, Victor Caratini, David Fry, Ben Rortvedt? (And BTW, I appreciate you answer nearly every question, tersely and to the point. Thanks.)
Nicklaus Gaut
11:13
Wong >> Caratini > Fermin > Rortvedt > Fry
And you’re welcome - I try my best ; )
11:15
I just accidentally deleted something - sorry!
