MLB debut in St. Louis or my no hitter in Korea

What differences did you find pitching primarily in Dunedin in '11 to NH in '12?
Deck McGuire
10:18
Honestly I've always said the biggest jump in pro ball is from high A to AA because in AA you're facing someone who could be in the big leagues tomorrow. I do think that's changing some with losing 42 MiLB teams.

Which visiting clubhouse was the worst you were ever in. Which one was best?
Deck McGuire
10:19
I won't mention the worst... cause that's not nice! But best was probably El Paso cause it was brand new, or OKC cause TJ is the clubby GOAT!

Greetings, and thank you for taking the time to do this. I saw you pitch for Gastonia last year, and I was just curious how your time there ranked compared to other places you've been along the way.
Deck McGuire
10:20
Absolutely loved my time there!
Bob
10:20
How did you decide it was time to hang them up?
Deck McGuire
10:22
When I felt like my chances of getting to the big leagues was basically non existent and collecting a check wasn't worth being away from my family. I love the game and always will, but I played to help a team win major league baseball games. Since I didn't see that happening anymore I knew it was time.

What will you be graduating in from GT?

Business management

was it a culture shock being a foreign player in Asia? Or what do the teams do to make it an easy transition?
Deck McGuire
10:23
A little for sure. I always said the weirdest part was not being able to eavesdrop in Starbucks. But Samsung did a great job of making me and my family comfortable both at the stadium and away from it. My translator, Alex Yoon, was a stud!

Hi Deck, what is the competition level of the CPBL? How does it compare to the minors - is it like High A? AA?
Deck McGuire
10:24
I'd put the CPBL somewhere in the 2.5 A range, there was only 5 teams when I was there so each team is really deep offensively.

As someone who has pitched internationally as well as MLB, is there some aspect of MLB hitters that’s collectively better than in other leagues?
Deck McGuire
10:26
They see the best pitching in the world night in and night out. And they have for a long time. I think the depth of pitching in America is really the biggest separator.

Hi Deck!  Go Jackets!  You were a great interview on WREK back in the day!  What was the biggest adjustment from college to the minors?
Deck McGuire
10:27
Getting into a 5 day starter routine. Second would be that everyone in the line up was one of the best in the country!
JT
10:27
Hi Deck, what was your favorite part about Spring Training as a player?
Deck McGuire
10:28
The routine!! It will always be my favorite.

If you had to pick either Vladdy Or Bo to be the Jays franchise player who would you pick?
Deck McGuire
10:28
2018 I would have said Bo, but really hard to pick against Vladdy in anything these days.

How would you compare the KBO to MLB and the minor leagues? Do you think it's directly comparable to any of the leagues in the US or are there different strengths and weaknesses compared to say AA?
Deck McGuire
10:30
I wouldn't for a couple reasons... 1. It's a totally different style of baseball. More like a west coast, bunt, move guys over, playing to win every inning style. 2. It is a WAY smaller player pool. It's a country of only 51 million people!

What are your thoughts on new rules like banning the shift and ghost runner in extras?
Deck McGuire
10:31
Banning the shift I'm pretty indifferent. I didn't love the shift based on the way I pitched so it doesn't really bother me.
10:32
The extra innings rule is interesting because it saves a ton of pitchers from getting sent down if their team ends up playing 17 innings! So from that end I love it. Flip side is the baseball purest in me so I'm not a huge fan.

Thanks for doing this chat! How was your experience in Anaheim and playing for Mike Scioscia?
Deck McGuire
10:33
Probably the most talented team I've ever been on and yet some of the most humble players I've shared a clubhouse with
Jmac
10:33
Thanks for your time! What was it like as a pitcher to throw in hot FSL climates in April/early in the season vs colder like in the IL/EL?
Deck McGuire
10:33
Didn't bother me too much. I wore the exact same uniform on the mound whether is was -5 or 105!

11th overall is pretty high in the MLB draft. Any added pressure being picked so high and did any teammates/opposing players treat you differently because of where you were picked?
Deck McGuire
10:35
I mentioned earlier that there was definitely more pressure internally, but I was so fortunate to have such amazing teammates that no one treated me any differently. However, some fans didn't necessarily feel the same way...

How do you feel when you see a ball that you signed for a fan on eBay selling? Do you have a personal eBay account that you sell memorabilia?
Deck McGuire
10:36
It comes with the territory I guess, but I will say, I hope it isn't a real big league ball cause those things are expensive and I'm sure my signature would devalue it! And no I don't have my own account.
