I wanna talk Golf! What's the most memorable highlight from your golf career?
Paul Sewald
10:22
Nowwww were talking important stuff. I've been very lucky to get to play some great golf courses, but the most memorable is easily playing Shinnecock Hills a couple weeks before the US Open there in 2018.

Hey Paul congrats on a wicked 2021 season, who’s the hitter that you hate facing the most?
Paul Sewald
10:24
Well there are amazing hitters on every team in the league since they are the best in the world at what they do as well. Dont want to give any of them an edge against me though!
Dan

Paul, as fans of the game, we tend to cling to traditional "rivalries"  (Red Sox vs. Yankees, Giants vs. Dodgers, and for me, my Cubbies vs. Cardinals).  On the player's side, what does that look like?  Are most guys friends across the lines, or is there a little bit of competitive rivalry that you guys hold onto?
Paul Sewald
10:25
I can't speak for any of those teams/rivalries since I havent been a part of any of those. I definitely felt a different energy in the stadium during the Subway Series, but that's an appreciation to the fans who create that buzz for us.

Paul, how best can you describe your role in the bullpen? Setup, closer or mix of both?
Paul Sewald
10:26
We shaped our bullpen based off who matched up the best against which hitters on the other team. So that dictated most of when I pitched whether it was the 8th or 9th inning.

You served as both a setup man and closer last season. Do you prefer one over the either?  Is there more of an adrenaline rush closing or a different mindset required?
Paul Sewald
10:28
I dont have a preference really, other than you get an extra cool stat at the end of the 9th inning. There's an adrenaline rush every time you get to play in a big league game no matter the score, the inning, any of it.

When do you see expansions and what state’s?
Paul Sewald
10:29
Great question. We have enough on our plate when it comes to negotiations, but it would be interesting to see. This has been the longest tenure without expansion in baseball. No professional opinion, but if i had to guess---Portland, Charlotte, Nashville, Vegas possibly.

Hey Paul! Have you gotten a chance to meet up with a couple of your new teammates, Adam Frazier and Robbie Ray yet and if so, what are your first impressions of them?
Paul Sewald
10:30
I have not met up with either since its hard in offseason, but stoked to add both of those great players. Our team is better because of them.
Fred

Paul, do you like to golf?
Paul Sewald

Is it hard for you personally to watch the lockout situation unfold right as you hit arbitration for the first time?
Paul Sewald
10:31
The lockout situation is a very sticky one and not ideal timing, but the arbitration stuff will all get taken care of so im not too worried.

Hi Paul—go M’s! What is one move you would like to see the Mariners make once the lockout ends?
Paul Sewald
10:32
I think I've shown it on social media a few times, but having Kris Bryant at third base wouldnt be too bad!
John
10:32
How different are the mounds from stadium to stadium? Are they pretty consistent? Have a favorite?
Paul Sewald
10:33
Luckily, the grounds crews in the big leagues are pretty darn good and every mound is pretty similar to the next. For me its T-Mobile Park though without a question.
Mariners
10:33
Who do you credit with your breakout?
Paul Sewald
10:34
It was a team effort between me, our organization's pitching coaches, and pitching strategists to come up with the best game plan on how to be the best i can be.

a lot of relievers throw heaters to 100 these days. On the contrary, most bullpen pitchers in Seattle including you sits in the low to mid 90s but still have great success. What is your strategy or some points your coach staff tell you in using your fastballs?
Paul Sewald
10:35
It's a tough day when "mid 90s" becomes a bad thing hahaha I would attribute throwing at the top of the strikezone and trying to spin the ball as much as i can as my ideal strategy.
Fred
10:35
Paul, how do you deal with hecklers when you are sitting in the bullpen? Do you engage? Find your happy place and pretend like you don't hear them? Something else?
Paul Sewald
10:36
Ohhhhh the hecklers. Fans are great and we appreciate their support no matter what.

Greetings Paul, My question for you is, have you ever had a point in your career when you were thinking you weren’t going to have a job/couldn’t pitch.
Paul Sewald
10:37
There have been at least a handful of times like this just in my professional career let alone amatuer level. Just had to keep working and making adjustments until it all clicked.

10:37
Thanks for doing this Paul. When facing batters in games, how much of what you're throwing is based on the scouting report vs gut feel? Do you ever disagree with the catcher on what to toss in next?
Paul Sewald
10:39
Scouting reports are essential when it comes to gameplanning. I need to know where I can miss and not get hit and where to attack with 2 strikes, and a lot of other factors. Our catchers are great and we are usually on the same page, but plenty of shaking off, because at the end of the day its my responsibility to feel confident and throw the pitch i want to.

Being a 10th round draft pick, did you feel a bit of an edge on your shoulder not being an uber top prospect and having to prove yourself as a big league caliber pitcher?
Paul Sewald
10:40
I've had to use that edge and chip on my shoulder for as long as I can remember. "You dont throw hard enough" has been etched into my brain forever, and I'll never stop using that kind of motivation.

When out on the road what is your favorite food to eat? Any memorable restaurants/cities?
Paul Sewald
10:41
One of my favorite things to do on the road is find some of the best restaurants in the cities we play in. Im guilty of using Guy Fieri's Diners Drive Ins and Dives as a pretty solid reference. Too many to count but Favorite in division would be Pecan Lodge in Dallas.

10:42
How much of a legend are Ichiro and Ken Griffey jr in Seattle?
Paul Sewald
10:43
Not just in Seattle but across the world! Every single little leaguer my age practiced their Ken Griffey Jr batting stance and Ichiro is just the best person to go along with one of the best players ever.

As a fan we want baseball out of the lockout... But players need to be heard.  What one thing are u most wanting for players?
Paul Sewald
10:44
The thing we want most out of the lockout is competitiveness across the league. We want all 30 teams to want to win. The teams owe that to the fans if nothing else.
