Which catcher(s) influenced you and your catching style?  Both growing up and as a pro. Thanks!
Caleb Joseph

Don Werner was an amazing influence on me in Baltimore. Had it not been for him I would have never made it. John Russell took what Don had been working on to another level. JR was so instrumental in my development at the big league level. I owe a LOT to both of them.

Hi Caleb.  It has got to be really time consuming managing pitchers and learning opposing batters.  What percentage of your time would you estimate you spend planning how to catch games vs general catching defense vs working on hitting?
Caleb Joseph
3:47
Easy answer is probably 60% planning and 40% other. Times are changing though, now most teams just give you a wristband type of deal and trust you"ll just call from that.

Hey Caleb, what was your most memorable MLB moment aside from your MLB debut
Caleb Joseph
3:49
The same guy that didn't get an RBI in an entire year (Broke a 127 year record), has also homered in 5 consecutive games. Might be an Oriole record for catchers? Not sure. That's a personal accolade, but best "Moment" was the dog pile and celebration after winning the 2014 AL East Divison. Amazing!

What would you say is something catchers spend much more of their time on than the average fan would realize? (game-planning, studying up on umpires, etc?)
Caleb Joseph
3:50
Developing relationships with pitchers. It takes time to earn trust. Lots and Lots and Lots of time investing into them.

what pitchers have the hardest stuff to hit?
Caleb Joseph
3:50
All of them!

What clicked to make you such a successful defender behind the dish? The local media always said you could hit enough but there were questions about your defense and then you shifted to become a defense-first kind of backstop once you hit the AAA/MLB
Caleb Joseph

Not sure, always thought I could catch. Maybe not having to catch a developing Zack Britton every 5 days? Poor guy hadn't harnessed the powerful sinking action just yet! Maybe I looked like a doofus trying to block 95mph sinkers in the dirt.

What was it like playing in the AL East all those years?
Caleb Joseph
3:52
A never-ending War. Every opponent was tough as nails, zero days or series off, every play mattered.
players' contract year
3:52
Hello Caleb, Thanks for doing this.  It always seems like a player will have career years when they are up for a new contract.  If not career year, a much higher than average year.  I assume that is because players are putting in much more work to better themselves than other years.  Is this true or is it something else?  Can you make sense of it?
Caleb Joseph
3:53
I've personally never seen a play "start working harder" during a contract year. I haven't seen them all but it just seems to work out that way huh? But no, never really seen a guy totally change his routine or approach because its a contract year.

At what point in your career did you become a catcher and stop playing other positions at all? Do you think you could hod down first or third base in a  pinch?
Caleb Joseph
3:54
Yea I could fill in. Key word.. Fill In! I played SS growing up, caught a little in HS and moved around in college. I'd encourage kids to move around, that what all these teams want now right? Versatility?

Hey Caleb! I was wondering what was your biggest factor in deciding to become a catcher? Not an easy position at all and very demanding. Props to your career so far.
Caleb Joseph
3:55
The position chose me! Couldn't run fast, hit it far, or throw really hard, but had good hands! That leaves Catcher!

In your brief time in the Mets system, we’re there any young players that stood out to you? Also, when your playing days are over do you plan on coaching? Thank you.
Caleb Joseph
3:56
I'd consider coaching! the Crow-Armstrong kid stood out to me. I believe he was traded though?

Do you have any ideas of managing later in your career?
Caleb Joseph

Did you and Zack Greinke cross paths with the Dbacks and if so, do you have a funny zack greinke story.
Caleb Joseph
3:58
Yes, awesome guy. One time in PIT he told me I should keep the ball low in the cage because I didn't have any power and if it gets too high the outfielders will just catch it"

Always will be remembered as one of my favorite O’s for sure. Big time grinder and just a hard nosed baseball player. Loved the malarkey call at Fenway. The way you call a ball game and handle a staff have always impressed me, speaking as a former catcher. Big ask of post playing days here, any interest in working the Manager ranks? You fit the mold of a future manager at least to me, I.E. Torrey Lovullo, Eric Wedge, Mike Scoscia, etc. Would love to see you back in the Orange and Black someday in any capacity!

I very much appreciate your words Brennen! Birdland is home!

You were always a top-tier pitch framer. Was this something coached into you in college and the minors?
