If Schwarber is traded, could the Cubs then go after someone like Lorenzo Cain?
Steve Adams
3:30
Cubs aren't trading Schwarber

What pieces can the Giants sell in your opinion? Nunez? Strickland? What can they really get for guys like that?
Steve Adams
3:30
Charlie Wilmoth broke this down well over the weekend in our Taking Inventory series:
3:32
I don't think they'll move Strickland, who's controlled through 2021, unless he fell out of favor with his inexplicably stupid Bryce Harper debacle. They'll get less than what they gave up for Nunez (Mejia) but can still get some mid-level prospect that ranks in the middle of a team's top 30 or so. In general it's difficult to say "They can expect [specific player] or [player in this small window on top 100 lists]." Nunez is useful but he's not a marquee player and doesn't come with control.
I was surprised they even gave up Mejia to get him last year.

what had surprised you about the dbacks this year?
Steve Adams
3:35
Honestly, just how good they've been top to bottom. I loved Robbie Ray and Jake Lamb coming into the season, but they've both performed at a best-possible-scenario level, which you can never bank on even if you like guys as breakout candidates.

Owings has been really good, they've gotten really nice relief pitching from some fairly unexpected sources... with the exception of the Shelby Miller injury, almost everything has gone their way.

So the Rocks are pretty much stuck with Cargo this year, but have his $20mm per year coming off the books in 2018. How do they spend it? Free agents or invest in extensions with Arrenado and/or Blackmon?
Steve Adams
3:39
Arenado is his own line item on the team's ledger and is a special ownership-level exception if they work out an extension. We're talking Stanton-level type of contract if they're going to sign him (and Arenado has the same agents as Giancarlo).

And while they're shedding his $20MM salary, that money is basically just going to be reinvested in a big arb raise for Blackmon and the huge increases that are built into Arenado's 2-year deal and the Ottavino contract.

Is Bronson Arroyo toast? His home runs allowed, FIP and ERA are almost off the charts for a starter. Thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:40
I don't think he has much left, no
And his stats bear that out. Not exactly riveting analysis there, but the guy is 40 and throwing in the mid-80s with a bonkers amount of homers allowed. I'd say we're more or less looking at the end of the line.
DL $$
3:41
Do players lose any $ or service time when on the 10-day DL? If so, any chance the Dodgers get some scrutiny from the MLBPA how they'd rotated SPs and Adrian G on and off when they want to use them?
Steve Adams
3:41
Nope. They get MLB service time and are paid at their full rate when on the Major League 10-day and 60-day DL.
3:42
The only way they'd catch heat would be if they optioned a guy and then put him on the minor league DL, but then the player, his agent and the union would file a grievance, so that type of situation doesn't happen. If a player is optioned and then found to have an injury, the option is typically just rescinded and he's placed on the MLB DL. It happened with Tom Koehler earlier this year in Miami.

3:42
Who is the most likely to get traded from the pirates at the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:43
Tony Watson is as good as gone, as far as I'm concerned. Though his recent performance hasn't helped his stock.
Tristan
3:43
Is that Oregon State guy undraftable if you're a GM?
Steve Adams
3:43
I'm not going near him, no.
Twins
3:43
When do the Twins dump their bullpen and get a new one?
Steve Adams
3:45
I'm pretty surprised they haven't put Belisle out to pasture yet. Also surprised they keep going with fringe guys as opposed to the more exiciting arms that might actually have a long-term future in the 'pen. I know Chargois has been hurt, but Melotakis seems reasonable.

Nick Burdi having TJ really hurt them.

Why don't the mets give the starting shortstop to amed Rosario at this point as his to lose
Steve Adams
3:46
Every report out of New York -- including one today from Anthony DIComo -- basically says they feel like he needs more development time. It's easy to look at his Triple-A numbers and clamor for a promotion, but everyone hits in Las Vegas. And he's walking in fewer than 6% of his PAs, which isn't great for a player whom they've said needs to improve his approach at the plate.

3:47
At the beginning of the season, Neftali Feliz seemed like a candidate to be traded at the deadline. CAn they get anything for him now?
Steve Adams
3:48
I don't know that the Brewers are even going to be trading veteran pieces away at all yet, though I suppose even if they're holding/modestly pursuing a playoff push, Feliz might be deemed expendable. He had medical concerns this offseason (hence the one year deal) and has been a mess lately in terms of control and overall performance. I don't think there's a ton of value there.

3:49
Do you think Austin Meadows will got called up even when Starling Marte returns or will they wait until September?
Steve Adams
3:49
I think he'll get called up when he hits in Triple-A, which hasn't really happened yet outside of a stretch of two to three weeks.

With all the injuries at pitcher, how soon do you see the astros dealing for a pitcher? And who do you think they target?
Steve Adams
3:52
If the injuries were more serious, there'd be more urgency. But they have a massive lead and are expecting both Keuchel and McCullers back in the not-too-distant future. They're not going to rush it. I expect them to be in on all of the top arms on the market -- Sonny Gray, Jose Quintana, Gerrit Cole (if he's available) and probably a few guys that don't seem likely to be available now but emerge as more viable options closer to the deadline.

3:53
Why can't any mets players stay healthy? Does it say something abt the medical and training staff and methods that maybe they should go cream bring in a new medical and training staff
Steve Adams
3:54
They're analyzing that right now, but I do think there's probably some ties to their medical staff and/or their strength and conditioning efforts. It's not just that they have a lot of injuries -- that's true of many teams -- but that they so often wait to put someone on the DL, frequently to the long-term detriment, and have so many other bizarre controversies. (E.g. Matz saying an outside doctor diagnosed him differently than the team doctors or the Syndergaard circus)

3:54
What do you think of the Braves drafting Kyle Wright?
Steve Adams
3:56
Good on them to get a nice combo of certainty and upside that is already a reasonably polished product. Some Braves fans complained about having "too much pitching" or "enough" pitching, which is baffling to me. There's no such thing. I liked the pick and thought they were fortunate to have Wright on the board there.

3:57
Why don't the Mets call up Rosario?? Reyes for 2 weeks at short?? No!!
Steve Adams
3:57
I have no idea why Reyes is on a Major League roster.
Wrinkle
3:57
Reds wise or foolish picking more high school players in this years draft .
Steve Adams
3:57
They took the guy that they think was the most talented player available to them. That's how they should do it.
Houston, we have a pennant?
3:58
How do you think the Astros will hande McCullers' innings?
