Wily Won't Go Home
4:28
Wily Peralta gonna get a chance to pitch somewhere this year? San Diego or Baltimore maybe (after a release)...
Steve Adams
4:29
I'd imagine Milwaukee will just outright him and keep in the org as depth. He forfeits the rest of his salary if he rejects the outright, so he'd accept.

So many big names were not traded. Lynn, Britton, Hand, Verlander, etc. Is there one big reason for this?
Steve Adams
4:31
Lynn: Doubt much was offered, Cards not totally out of the race.
Britton: Owners probably didn't sign off
Hand: Padres sound like they were asking the moon
Verlander: Trade talk surrounding him was always overblown. No one's touching that contract. I tried to make that as clear as possible, as did Jeff, whenever we discussed a Verlander trade on MLBTR. It was never realistic.
Wily Wont Go Home

I did not know he'd forfeit that salary in such a case. You learn something new every day at MLBTRADERUMORS.COM...

Players with five-plus years of Major League service can reject an outright assignment and retain their salary. Peralta is currently between four and five. So, if he's released by the team, he keeps it. But, if they assign him to the Minors and he says "Nope, not taking it," then he walks away from that sum.
4:33
That said, because he has more than three years of service, if he's not on the 40-man roster at season's end, he can (and almost certainly will) elect to become a free agent.

offseason   Edwards, baez, schwarber, almora for trout. Who says no?
Steve Adams
4:34
Angels
Villar
4:34
Another case of "maybe I should've taken that extension..."
Steve Adams
4:35
Probably, but there's no great way of knowing. Villar could have a huge 2018-19 performance and sign a bigger contract anyway. Or he could just rebound when he's closer to free agency and sign a more lucrative free agent deal.
4:36
Everyone made such a big deal about Ian Desmond "missing out" on $107MM (with deferrals). He ended up with $95.5MM over eight years instead of $107MM (with deferrals) over seven.
He'll be OK. Villar probably will be, too.
Now, if he turns into Matt Dominguez or something, then, well.... ouch.

People, people.  Stop trying to trade for Trout.  There isn't enough in your entire organization to get Trout.
Steve Adams
4:37
In terms of what someone would realistically offer, that's true. But if the Cubs (sticking with that example) offered Bryant, Happ, Almora, Baez -- technically speaking, sure they could eventually give enough to make the Angels blink.
(They'd just never do that, of course).

Do you think the suspension hindered Preller from getting a good return on Brad Hand?
Steve Adams
4:40
I don't. Teams have already shown they're willing to deal with Preller since that suspension. And if you want Brad Hand and think he's being offered at a reasonable price, you're going to get him. Preller and every other team knows he's under a massive microscope... in that sense, you know things almost have to be on the up and up, or his actual job is on the line.
I just don't think anyone wanted to meet the asking price. Based on the reports offering some insight into what that price was, I don't necessarily blame them.

4:41
Am I in the race for the AL CY or does Sale have it locked up?
Steve Adams
4:41
James Paxton is awesome, but Sale has been even better on a per-inning basis and has also pitched 40 more innings. Paxton isn't close.
That's not a knock on him, btw, it's just that Sale is running away with the damn thing.

Steve, I enjoy reading your page. However, I am not going to ask you any Tiger's questions as I am disgusted with the trades they recently made.....
Steve Adams
4:42
That in and of itself is basically a question!
I thought their return on Wilson/Avila was fine.
4:43
The JDM trade, yeah, I don't really like that. It feels light, even with a lack of demand. If that's the best I'm getting for Martinez, I'm just waiting until closer to the deadline to see if further need materializes. They must really like Lugo.

Did I make a mistake signing Yadi to an extension? With the call up of Kelly, I'm not sure what I expect Matheny to do the next three years juggling the two?
Steve Adams
4:43
I didn't care for the Yadi extension at the time.

How in the world could the Astros not make a bigger move?! Did they blow it?
Steve Adams
4:45
I'm extremely surprised that Liriano is all they did. (I love him as a LH reliever, by the way... though not at the price of Teoscar, even if he's effectively blocked.)

They could still look to do something in August, but their options are obviously limited now.

4:45
Is there a way the Angels can buyout Pujols' contract or are we stuck with him for five more years? At this point he's costing us games...
Steve Adams
4:45
Could just release him, but they won't do that. The money is basically dead though.
Ryan
4:46
If Skaggs returns this year and underwhelms, is he a nontender candidate?
Steve Adams
4:47
No. The upside is still there, and if he underwhelms he's not going to cost anything. $1.5 to $2MM maybe? That's worth the roll of the dice.

4:48
Looking at the Astros lack of movement, is it possible they don't think their window has opened yet, and they want to wait a couple years when guys like Fisher are up?
Steve Adams
4:49
They're winning the division by like 16 games and have the AL's best record. They absolutely think their window is open (and moving Aoki puts Fisher in an everyday role right now)

The Astros just didn't feel that any of the asking prices on available assets were commensurate with the value their respective teams sought in return. On the one hand, I commend them for not overpaying, but on the other hand, I'm shocked they effectively decided not to make any additions at all outside of Liriano
4:50
Sure don't overpay for Britton if you don't think he can be counted on to be ZACH BRITTON, but not pivoting and making some kind of lower-scale addition seems odd
