$400MM, no.  We put that thinking it would be the winning bid, the team that wanted those guys the most.  But I think a dozen teams could defensibly offer 10/300 to one of Harper/Machado, and that has not happened.

What advice would you give to a student who wants to cover baseball as a career?
Tim Dierkes
2:20
My path is an atypical one and probably not something to try to replicate.  I think the best bet would be to major in journalism and build up a great resume writing online as much as you can (for you own blog if need be).

Did Jason Martinez get fired?
Tim Dierkes
2:21
Technically, yes.  I feel that we parted on good terms, but yes.

Who do you think is giving Machado and Harper contracts bigger than Stanton’s?  Machado has two teams wanting him, Harper has one.  I just don’t see why any teams need to go that high.
Tim Dierkes
2:22
I believe that is what's currently happening - a game of chicken where the White Sox and Phillies don't see a serious third suitor and don't want to pay 350 if 275 gets it done.
With Harper, there's an assumption that he could go back to the Nats for 10/300, but given the spending they've done I'm not positive of that.

Does anyone believe I will really skimp on the 9th inning?
Tim Dierkes
2:23
I think most expect them to add one quality RP and perhaps two.

Sports teams for the most part are privately owned. Why are contract values and details of MLB playerd made public at all? Its really none of our business what an owner wants to pay a player.
Tim Dierkes
2:24
I don't honestly know.  Some teams even put the salaries in their press releases.  Perhaps it's that so many people are involved in each contract, and so many people have access to the info and can leak it to the media, and the public is hungry for the info, that it gets out.

Best player dealt at the trade deadline...MadBum?  I see Atlanta or the Yankees making the splash
Tim Dierkes
2:26
Arenado, Castellanos, and Khris Davis are some names to watch for in July.  If the Rox/A's don't have the seasons they hoped for.
But yeah, MadBum figures to dominate the market.

One thing in baseball that you would like to see changed?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
I'd like to see a third team added in NY.

With the way free agency has been going these last couple years and players upset with contracts, do you foresee a strike in the (near) future?
Tim Dierkes
2:30
The current collective bargaining agreement runs through 2021.  So we've got this current offseason, the 19-20 offseason, and the 20-21 offseason.  That is going to be a whole lot of free agents getting disappointing deals.  The players could be pretty mad by that point.  Although Tony Clark does not seem like a guy who will go to the mat and have the players strike.  In a way, the ball is more in the owners' court - how much will they try to hold the line?

Are there any plans to update or refresh the look of the MLBTR app?
Tim Dierkes
2:31
I saw a few scattered comments in our survey that the app or the site looks outdated.  I haven't really thought about that much.  I'd rather improve some of our features that need some polish, like the Transaction Tracker.

Realmuto to Dodgers for joc pederson ? Possible?
Tim Dierkes
2:31
No, Joc doesn't get them close.

What do you think of the Yankees' off-season to this point?
Tim Dierkes
2:33
Loved the Paxton trade.  Happ signing was good value.  Sabathia is alright, though I may have looked for a more interesting option there.  The Yankees could easily have pushed and landed Corbin, and I think they probably should have.  Especially with DJLM not being a great bargain and not being a crucial piece, I'd rather have allocated that money toward winning the Corbin bid.
I also think they paid too much for Britton, who I like less than, say, David Robertson.

Does the DH to NL really have any chance or is this all smoke?
Tim Dierkes
2:34
I think it has a good chance within the next five years.  Watching pitchers bat kind of sucks.

Who's the most likely Astros addition: Encarnacion, Jose Martinez or Realmuto? As is, there's no way they are better than Boston and probably not the Yankees
Tim Dierkes
2:37
It seems like all three teams are in the 95-97 projected win range.  Chirinos would be a disappointing choice at catcher given the options that were available to the Astros this winter.  I like the Brantley pickup, but I don't love playing guys like Reddick or Gurriel every day if you don't have to.  They're also facing a pair of big losses in the rotation, and I think they should have topped the Rays' offer to Morton.
2:38
Oops, didn't really answer your question!  I'll say Jose Martinez.

Where does LeMahieu primarily line up with NYY? Even though gold glove isn't the best metric, is it strange to you that they'd shuffle around a guy who has multiple GG at 2B?
Tim Dierkes
2:39
There's this super-utility idea and the newfound fascination with depth some of the big powers are having.  I'm sure he'll spend a lot of time at 2B anyway.

As of right now, where do Phillies stand in the division - 4th? How far up would a Machado or Harper signing move them?
Tim Dierkes
2:41
I think the Nats and Mets are pretty clearly ahead of the Phillies right now and the Braves about on par.  Machado could perhaps add three wins to the ledger for them over incumbent options, and Harper could probably add four (assuming both project as five-win players).  This would bump the Phils into the Mets' range but leave them still short of the Nats.
Informed a lot by that.
