Am I guaranteeing Trouts departure in a few years by not shelling out the money to field a legitimate contender?
Tim Dierkes
2:42
Certainly not guaranteeing it, but definitely increasing the chances of him thinking the grass is greener on the other side.  The Angels have held the same payroll for three years running - how do they defend that?

I'm a huge Dodger fan, and I agree. We should all be highly irritated if they don't even engage on Harper. It makes no sense other than being greedy and trying to save money.....THAT THEY MAKE OFF OF US FANS!!!

Who's the "mystery team" in on Machado?  Or is there any?
Tim Dierkes
2:44
I find it nearly impossible to believe that only two teams are engaged.  The Angels, Cubs, Braves, Mets, Yankees, and as a huge reach, Rays, are teams that should poke their head up if it seems like the bidding could end under $300 mil.
If you're the Cubs, and you could have a Baez-Machado middle infield, do you really not reach under the couch cushions?  Looks like they won't engage though.

Do you see the Reds getting another top level pitcher ??
Tim Dierkes
2:45
Having done some nice work on the rotation already, I find CF a bit more likely (and Pollock such a nice match),

Do you think there is any chance a team is still trying to get both Machado and Harper?
Tim Dierkes
2:45
I was always skeptical of that and now I think there's virtually no chance.

Thoughts on the Mets offseason thus far?
Tim Dierkes
2:48
Overall, I'm a fan.  The team got a lot better and is much more exciting.  The back end of the bullpen looks strong.  The rotation remains so.  Really strong infield depth.  Pollock would be an excellent finishing move.

What about the Astros in on Harper?
Tim Dierkes
2:49
It's another example where I think they should be, and I'd want them to be as a fan of the team, but I do not think they are.

Hate to say this, but doesn't Machado to the Cubs make more sense than Machado to the White Sox if Machado wants to play SS?  The Cubs could move on from Russell.
Tim Dierkes
2:50
I'm pretty sure the White Sox would let him play SS too.  I know they like Tim Anderson but I don't think they'd let him get in the way of a deal.

Do you think there's any truth to the Padres being the mystery team in on Machado?
Tim Dierkes
2:51
Given the Hosmer signing, I think it's within the realm of possibility.

Do you collect babes all cards? If so how many do you have? Who are some of your best players or cards?
Tim Dierkes
2:52
My soon to be eight-year-old has gotten waaaaay into baseball cards in the last few months, and it's been really fun for me and has rekindled the hobby a bit for me.  I'll go on eBay and I think it's cool that you can get, say, an autographed Miles Mikolas card for like $15.  I don't care at all about what baseball cards might be "worth," so for us it's about cool-looking ones mostly.

We are definitely heading to a labor stoppage right?
Tim Dierkes
2:55
I can see the drumbeat being pretty loud a couple of years from now.  It would be ideal if both sides can proactively engage on this and try to figure out some tradeoffs.  Although - there might not be any tradeoff that will make the teams spend on FAs like they used to.  I think the luxury tax is just used an excuse not to spend and is not a real impediment.  If Harper and Machado can't get $350MM deals, then solutions that have been proposed, such as getting players to FA earlier (say after four years) won't necessarily result in the lavish deals of yore.

Do you agree that Phillies are "likely" to get Machado or Harper? And what are the chances they get both?
Tim Dierkes
2:55
Yes, I do.  I'll give a 3% chance of both.

Do reports of the Nats’ interest waning in Harper seem iffy to you? I don’t get how they go from offering $300M/10 to a higher offer and now to not wanting to go over $25M a year. Can you explain?
Tim Dierkes
2:58
I buy that, simply because they've spent a fair amount of money since that offer was made.  Corbin, Dozier, Anibal, Gomes, and Rosenthal have brought them to a record high payroll, and that's after dumping off Roark's salary.  They might be thinking that they can add a decent RP, maybe, but that their team looks great for 2019 as is, including their OF.  Guys like Zimmerman and Dozier drop off the payroll next winter and maybe Rendon ends up being the guy they commit Harper's money to.
Ah crap, I just ended a sentence with a preposition.  Maybe Rendon ends up being the guy to whom they commit Harper's money.

It will be great to see you regularly. Your best bet on Realmuto's landing spot?
Tim Dierkes

I'll take the Dodgers.  They've hedged by getting Martin back, but he's almost 36 and is probably best suited for a backup role now.  And he's being paid like a backup, at least by them.

Collusion would be hard to prove, but owners really are trying to pull the brakes on long multi-year deals, aren't they?
Tim Dierkes
3:02
Yep - I honestly thought ten year deals would be flying around easily for Harper and Machado and a few teams would go beyond.  These are special free agents!  More special than Robinson Cano and the like!  But it seems that just about all the GMs have convinced their owners that it's better to not have the player than to do those deals.

Cubs valued Jason Heyward and look where that has them....out of options and not a factor for Harper or manny
Tim Dierkes
3:02
Heyward was a colossal mistake.  But he was never a superstar, and had a lot of his value tied up in defense.

I think the Mets need to extend deGrom and Syndergaard. 4yr/$122mil for deGrom and 5yr/$152.5mil for Thor. Fair market value or overpays?
Tim Dierkes
3:04
I'd say it's way light on deGrom, and perhaps too heavy on Thor.

Has the  analytical movement killed baseball?  Seems that all the geeks have killed the off season
Tim Dierkes
3:05
It's fair to say that geeks are a big reason teams have backed off on FA spending.  I don't know that, say, the Wei-Yin Chen contract was "good" for baseball or fans or something we needed to keep happening.

Why are the dodgers not considering in signing manny machado ? Is Corey Seaver 100 percent healthy?
Tim Dierkes
3:06
Seager is expected to be ready for Opening Day, and Justin Turner plays 3B, so I can see why the Dodgers have not attempted to sign Manny.
Big John
3:07
Mariners putting together a semi-competitive lineup.  Was all this talk about "reimagining" just about refilling the farm while bringing on some free agents?
