The Angels have been living in the $164-166MM payroll range for three years now, and this year they've bumped it all the way up to...$170MM.  Now if the Skaggs/Heaney minor injuries become month-plus type situations, and Gio is still out there, sure, they might throw him a few mil.
Certainly I think it makes sense for the Angels, in their current position, to look hard at Keuchel or Kimbrel in an effort to push this team closer to the second wild card range, but it ain't my money.

Who has the better 2019 stats....Juan Soto or Justin Upton.  What would you think they would be?
Tim Dierkes
2:17
The answer is clearly Soto.  I'm not really talking about ribbies or whatever but something like wRC+, Soto is a strong favorite.

There is a lot of hype around Chris Paddock as the next great pitching sensation.  What are your expectations for this season and beyond?
Tim Dierkes
2:19
Chris Paddack is currently the Padres' best starting pitcher - and that was true before his eye-opening spring began.  The scouts say that he's all fastball-changeup, and that might not work, but I think he's a 3.50 ERA guy right now.

The Phillies pitching falls OFF after Arrieta and Nola.  How badly do they need Keuchel to keep pace in that division?  Don't think they have deep enough prospects to net great return at deadline, given their below-average drafts.
Tim Dierkes
2:20
I actually think Pivetta is better than Arrieta.  When you're in the mid to high-80 win range (unless your entire division is tanking or something) eking out one or two extra wins is huge.
Bo Sox bullpen
2:20
Not a single reliever looks trustworthy thus far. Panic time?
Tim Dierkes
2:22
I'm not one to look at spring performance in that way - and in fact I have no idea what their spring stats are.  Brasier, Barnes, and Hembree are solid enough.  Aside from maybe the Yankees, just about every bullpen can get better.  I also think we act like we can predict bullpens more than we can.  The Marlins might have an awesome bullpen this year.

Did I make a mistake drafting Craig Kimbrel in my fantasy league?  Will he be another Greg Holland?
Tim Dierkes
2:23
I'd expect a nice healthy discount when drafting Kimbrel in fantasy right now, as that uncertainty should be priced in.  Still, the smart money is on Kimbrel being signed by April 1 and serving as some team's closer.  I'd give about 70% odds of that.

Say the Milwaukee Brewers sign Kimbrel, what does the deal for him look like?
Tim Dierkes
2:23
I'd guess a one-year deal at $18MM or so.

What is your prediction on Goldschmidt?  Do you think he signs long-term in St Louis?
Tim Dierkes
2:25
I'd say it's more likely than not, but also not anything close to a foregone conclusion.  We can only guess about whether Goldy is being realistic about how things go now for free agents starting their new deals at age 32.

Can you publish a list of potential trade targets that are starting pitchers with some control?  Let's get back to the bread and butter of being a trade rumor site!
Tim Dierkes
2:25
How about I'll just make up such a list now?  Give me a minute.
2:30
Greinke, Kluber, Jose Urena, Dylan Bundy, Matthew Boyd, Marco Gonzales, Mike Minor, Alex Cobb, Danny Duffy, Wei-Yin Chen, Jordan Zimmermann, Robbie Ray, Michael Fulmer, Ian Kennedy, Tyler Chatwood, Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Stroman

I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous at first, but would it really be a horrible move for the Blue Jays to throw 20/500 ($25 mil a season) at Vladdy Jr. and make him a Blue Jay for life?
Tim Dierkes
2:31
Yeah, I think that would be horrible to do from a team standpoint.  Your general point is intriguing - is there a number where a team should attempt to lock up a potential superstar player for his entire career, before he's ever played in the Majors?  And as with everything, yes, there is such a number, but that number has to be much less than $500MM, even for Vlad Jr.
2:32
But it gets interesting if you get Vlad thinking.  For example...
You're Vlad Jr's agent, and the Blue Jays offer a 20-year, $250MM contract.

There's only been, like five contracts larger than that in MLB history.  But what I haven't computed is how many players have lifetime earnings over $250MM or how many are very likely to.  So good job BH, you came up with a very interesting question.

Is it possible Boras is overplaying his hand a bit and costing some of his players (Kimbrel) money?
Tim Dierkes
2:35
David Meter represents Kimbrel - not Boras.  Is it possible/likely that both agents overplayed their hands on Kimbrel/Keuchel?  Yes.  There are definitely instances of Boras clients waiting and waiting and taking a late offer that was not the best offer of the winter.  Hell, pretty sure Martin Maldonado just did that.

Fantasy wise should I worry about Machado in Petco?  Does he have the same value as he has had or am I better off having someone like Suarez at 1/10th the cost.
Tim Dierkes
2:36
I am not a big believer in dinging a hitter for moving to San Diego.  Maybe you knock a HR or two off the projection.  Machado and Suarez have fairly similar projections, except that Manny should give you 5 extra SBs, which does matter.

Will Vladimir Guerrero jr finally reach the majors

I think the oblique injury, aside from being oddly fortuitous for the club, pushes his debut to sometime around early May.

Is a trade with the yanks in the cards if bird and voit have a slow start? Something along the lines of Belt, cueto to yanks in return for ellsbury, voit /bird, and quality pitching prospect like chance Adams?
Tim Dierkes
2:38
I don't see anything like that going down.  It's more like Voit gets the job, and if he's terrible for a month then Bird gets a crack at it.  If something is to go down as a summer trade, sure, the Yanks could consider Belt, but not with all that other stuff attached.

Cubs are interested in adding to Catcher depth, who would be likely options?
Tim Dierkes
2:40
There's nobody left now that Maldonado has signed.  Some depth guys will get DFA or opt out of their minor league deals.  The Cubs literally got priced out of the backup catcher market this winter.

You mentioned it earlier, but what are the chances Senzel claims the Reds' CF job?
Tim Dierkes
2:41
I don't think the Reds will buck the trend.  When's the last time a team put a great prospect on an Opening Day roster - Jose Fernandez six years ago?  But I could easily see Senzel owning the job by May.

Why don't you ever post questions from women?
Tim Dierkes
2:42
I pay little attention to the questioner name and have little concept of a questioner's gender.  But I probably answering mostly questions from males because our audience is like 98% male.  Women are welcome though!

What is the date in 2019 that some of these FA do not have a Draft pick tied to them?
Tim Dierkes
2:43
The MLB draft in June.  Not sure its exact date offhand.
