So I think Paddack presents an excellent opportunity for the Padres get some positive PR by not worrying about the 2025 season.  Maybe putting him in the rotation out of the gate would even make him more likely to do an extension at some point.  If the Padres go to those lengths - which no one has done in recent years - they I don't think they'd send him back down unless he performed really poorly.

On the Altuve extension...I always felt like if he hit FA, he’d be able to command something close to the Cano deal on the open market...and he wound up signing for 5 extra yrs instead of 10. That was before we knew the FA market would bottom out, obviously...but is it really that weird? Also, when you say it’s un-Astro like...are you assuming we’d literally let every single star we have walk for greener pastures? I feel like we don’t know how Jim Crane will act with resigning our own guys...that may very well be the case. But that’s also a little different than just not spending big in FA

Altuve was signed through age 34, that's pretty much the current norm (Arenado, JDM, Justin Upton, Yoenis Cespedes all did the same).  Cano signed five years ago, and through age 40.  Those deals are officially dead - Mike freakin' Trout only signed through age 38, and Harper only got there by taking a smaller AAV than Jon Lester has.

It's un-Astro like because analytically, it's extremely risky, they didn't get a discount, and they did it two years early.

I really think trout didn't want to put with the free agency crap after seeing the Machado and Harper soap operas. And he knows what Philly fans can be like and didn't want any part of that. Your thoughts?
Tim Dierkes

There's even reason to believe Harper discussed his free agent experience with Trout.  So yeah, it's easy to imagine Trout asking around or just reading the news and thinking, "Free agency looks like it sucks, even if you're awesome, and what's another $50 mil when you've already made more than your grandchildren's grandchildren could ever spend?"
2:55
I would never dog Trout on taking this deal from a personal standpoint.  I imagine the players union though he might be a guy to push the envelope because his performance is historically insane, but he didn't want to be that guy and that's not a character flaw.
Myers Hate

I get the contract a balloons to 20 mil in the next couple years, but the guy is cheap this year and a 20/20 to 30/30 guy every year.  Why do people hate him SO much?  As a Padre fan, I love having him now on a team with Hosmer and Machado, and soon, Tatis.

When you have 20 HR power and you bat below .250, it's just hard for Myers to be more than 10-15% above average at hitting.  Throw in the fact that he's a negative on defense, you have a 2 WAR player making $20 mil a year.  I like your angle though and I think it's a good one for fans: Myers makes the team better, I like having/watching him, and it's not MY money, so as long as it doesn't prevent the team from improving, I don't care what he's paid.

Trout is gone do the Phillies open up the piggy bank for Kimbrel or Keuchel?
Tim Dierkes
2:58
I doubt the two are related or that the Phillies were anything more than curious about Trout, with his FA a full two years away.  Both pitchers would move the needle for the Phillies and are worth pursuing.

With the prevalence of pitching changes, wouldn't the best way to speed up the game be to limit the number of warm up pitches, during the game, to three, barring an injury? Most of these guys have already thrown in the bullpen anyway, and if they haven't, it is on the manager for not being prepared. Seems better than the three batter rule.

Best thing is just having the shortest possible commercial breaks.  To that end, props to MLB for trimming those breaks a bit despite the likely revenue loss.

cubs 1 year 20 mil for kimbrel thereby assuring a world series winner
Tim Dierkes

That would mean paying over $26MM, given the luxury tax, and the Cubs have made it very clear they're not planning to do something of that nature.  I wouldn't rule out Kimbrel at a lower salary though.

What would you rather have? Mike Trout for $430 million dollars, or $430 million regular trouts for $430 million dollars? For the sake of this discussion, let's assume you had $430 million dollars and no other investments existed. Also the trouts can be distributed evenly over time to avoid waste

You’re kidding yourself if you think Harper isn’t salty. He held the salary record for three weeks. Trout will hold it for a decade. Plus, he gets to play in Harper’s preferred city. Boras dropped the ball.

It's odd to me, the way some people think they can get into a player's head and know what he's thinking.  I have absolutely no idea what Bryce is thinking about right now, but I'l guess that it's mostly about his bruised ankle and not a bruised ego.

Yikes, Trout left 200mil on the table.

I've made some wildly optimistic contract predictions in my day, but I don't think $560MM was waiting for him in two years.
Ty Cobb

So I would have made $400M if I was born 110 years later??

Do you think veteran players could be altruistic enough to be come aboard for a deal that raises the minimum salary to say a million a year--even if free agency continues as it has recently?
Tim Dierkes
3:04
Yes, I think historically many players have fought for things that are mostly designed to benefit the next generation.  I think getting the minimum salary as high as possible would be a good priority for the union.

"I would never dog Trout on taking this deal from a personal standpoint." I'll go one step beyond that...I would never dog any player for taking whatever deal makes sense to him personally. It's their lives, their money, their careers. Let them do their thing and enjoy watching.

Hhhhhhheeyyy the Fonz has a good point.  Thanks for chatting everyone!
