The MLB season is officially underway!  And so is this chat!

I dont think bogaerts would have done that well in nexts years free agent market if he didnt sign the extension
Tim Dierkes
2:00
His 2019 season would have been a crucial factor, but this is a huge bargain for the Red Sox.  Bogaerts was paid only through age 32...even in this climate this should/would have been a seven or eight-year deal.  My guess is that this is not a contract Scott Boras wanted to sign.

Mariners 5-1 while "reimaginging"... is that the most "Mariners" thing ever?
Tim Dierkes
2:01
That's why they play the games!  If this team winds up missing the playoffs by a game or two, Dipoto will definitely wonder "what if" for a long time.  That said, I don't think they crack 80 wins.

At what point do the Braves finally hit the panic button? Acuna looks incredibly uncomfortable in his new position, and the middle relief is not relieving.
Tim Dierkes
2:02
Whatever that point is, it ain't three games in.  Whatever this team's flaws are, they existed a week ago as well.  They've got powder dry and the ability to make major additions in the summer if they want.

Are these extensions a good sign or a bad sign in terms of labor-strike fears?  I lean hard to these are bad....
Tim Dierkes
2:04
It's a case of what's good for the individual not being what's good for the players' union.  A lot of guys are getting theirs, with some stars or very good players possibly leaving $40-50MM on the table because they want a bird in the hand.  I'm hopeful that there can be some kind of restructuring that transfers money to younger players.

Should the Cubs worry about their rotation?
Tim Dierkes
2:05
I'd like to assess Yu Darvish around June.  He's such a wild card...could still be a #3 starter but could also have another lost year.

Is it really even worth considering Washington's offer at this point if you are Rendon? His competition on thr FA market is dwindling by the day, and Washington is probably not likely to offer him over market value - at least not yet.
Tim Dierkes
2:07
We just saw Bryce Harper have about three serious bidders, so it's legit that a player would consider a nice $100MM+ deal even if it's not what they once thought was possible.  But Rendon's comments make it sound like the Nats didn't get too close.
Opening Day over-reactions

In your opinion, what's the Opening Weekend over-reaction we'll laugh at once the season ends.

Maybe the idea that Tim Beckham is good?

Timmy D!  Happy baseball season!  Cubs bullpen is more underwhelming than even anticipated.  Do they make any changes/moves based on 3 games?
Tim Dierkes
2:10
No, but they've kind of stacked up on guys to shuttle in and out, and I do think their bullpen will change a lot throughout the season.  For example, once Morrow, Cedeno, and Barnette are ready, there could be a logjam.  Plus they've got a good 6-8 guys at Iowa who they picked up this winter who will likely be up.  The Cubs knew their bullpen was weak coming into this season and decided not to make meaningful additions, so I wouldn't expect anything until July.

Even with Lindor, the Indians offense looks pretty rough. Do the Twins have the pieces to take the division or do they still need to add someone like Keuchel or Kimbrel?
Tim Dierkes
2:11
It's just three games...I think the Indians are still well ahead of the Twins.

Do you think a Javy Baez extension gets done and would you be so bold as to predict the numbers (or a comp)?
Tim Dierkes
2:15
I think we looked at this a bit last year because we used it as a prompt for sample posts when we were hiring new writers.  I think we threw out something in the 6/100 range.  As to whether it happens, there's just not much to go on to make that guess, but certainly players are doing more deals lately than they had been.  But he is a full three years from free agency.
Kimbrel Signs After the Draft
2:16
... Sparking a bidding war. What say you?
Tim Dierkes
2:17
Bidding wars seem to be a thing of the past.  But I could see someone giving him $10MM+ for the remaining four months, sure.

Would singing Kechuel make the Angels the 2nd wild card spot favorite?
Tim Dierkes
2:19
I wouldn't go that far.  That would maybe add two wins to the ledger, and I'd still think the Rays or Twins would look a bit better.

Thoughts on the Padres young rotation in their first series?
Tim Dierkes
2:23
I don't know enough about Nick Margevicius to say whether he can make the leap and be effective all year.  I think Paddack is a budding ace and will deliver, and I like Lucchesi too.  I see Lauer as more of a 4.50 ERA type guy this year.  I think I read that no one in the current rotation will pitch 180 innings, so they're going to need to make an addition and I think they expect to.

Considering what Xander got, what does Didi get if he comes back healthy?
Tim Dierkes
2:24
I had put Didi around 5/85 assuming a healthy return.  But now I'm starting to think maybe he tops out at four years, and only then on the open market.

People keep arguing for earlier free agency to spark free agency but don't you think if they flood the market with even more FA's it's going to have the opposite effect and further kill the middle class?
Tim Dierkes
2:26
I could see that problem.  My guess is that FA after five years wouldn't move the needle in either direction as much as we think it would - teams won't start suddenly paying up because the average free agent is one year younger.  A lot of the top FA are still coming off extensions and are therefore in their 30s, and today's analytical teams aren't going to start liking signing guys into their late 30s again.

Corbin Burnes had 9 strikeouts through the first 3 innings. No one is talking about it
Tim Dierkes
2:27
Most likely because he wound up allowing four runs after that.  But I had the privilege of attending that game with my son yesterday, and we were definitely talking about it!  It was very impressive!

Padres could really use a veteran starting pitcher. Any chance they make a trade or sign someone sooner than later?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
They might be the favorite for Keuchel, and AJ did pull off the April trade for Kimbrel several years ago.  I think he'll come up with someone by June.
Juuust a bit outside

How serious is the brewers pursuit of kimbrel given that they already have the most untouchable reliever in MLB right now? No doubt kimbrel wants to close.
Tim Dierkes
2:28
I'd say it's overblown.
Moncada is Here
2:28
Is the pressure off Moncada now that Eloy is here?  What kind of player do you expect .280 20hrs?
Tim Dierkes
2:29
I can't speak to Yoan's pressure level.  I'm expecting a .330-.340 OBP with around 20 HR.  Probably not a .280 batting average given the Ks.
