Do you think teams will be looking to execute trades earlier this year with the "hard" trade deadline?  I think the Giants bullpen arms will be in as much of demand as Mad Bum, would you agree?
Tim Dierkes
2:26
The volume of trades made by July 31 obviously has to increase, since all the deals that would have normally happened in August can't anymore.  It seems reasonable that we'll see more early action, particularly with 7-8 teams that basically have no playoff chance right now.  Will Smith should be very popular.

Do you think the Yanks regret not going harder after Corbin after seeing what Happ has done so far?
Tim Dierkes
2:27
No...again, three starts.  They knew before the season that Corbin is a better pitcher than Happ.  They made some cold, hard calculations and decided not to offer Corbin that sixth year, and that is the difference between the way the team is run now and the Steinbrenner years.

Nothing Mike Trout does is a surprise to anyone as he has been the most consistent and best player for 7 years now.  What would constitute a surprise when it comes to Mike Trout?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
A steroid suspension would surprise me.
No

The Pirates are not better than the Reds. Wrong.
Tim Dierkes
2:28
If you define "better" as "will win more games in 2019," then the Pirates are better.

I know the Pirates rotation gets high marks, but isn't a big red flag that Cole, Morton, and especially Glasnow "figure it out" immediately upon leaving Ray Searage?
Tim Dierkes
2:30
Well, 2/3 of that might be more of a credit to the Astros than a discredit to the Pirates.  As for Glasnow getting the walks under control, that is often what a young pitcher does to go to the next level...you'd have to ask him in a candid conversation to see how much he credits the Rays for it.

Do you think the Marlins will be ready to spend in the 2022 Free Agent class with Correa, Lindor and Baez?
Tim Dierkes
2:32
After the 2021 season, will the Marlins be done rebuilding and ready to add a marquee player...boy, I sure hope so, or something has gone terribly wrong.
White Sox fan
2:32
I know White Sox fans were disappointed we didn't get Machado but how much did your beloved Cubs do this offseason??? At least Sox got guys like- Colome, Nova, Alonso, Herrera, Santana, McCann & Jon Jay. Pretty sure those trades and free agents cost more than Daniel Descalso & Brad Brach for those rich Cubs!  Bet you won't post this or reply to this though?
Tim Dierkes
2:33
I like to be upfront in mentioning that I'm a Cubs fan, but I feel confident that I'm objective about offseason reviews, team quality, etc.  But I know you already read these posts...
Both teams had crappy offseasons, for different reasons.  You might view it as some sort of competition, but I definitely do not.

The Indians have pretty much weathered the storm with their injuries and overall poor offense...what odds do you give the Twins to win the division?
Tim Dierkes
2:36
I'm pretty reliant on FanGraphs on such things...Twins are 52% to make the playoffs, about 28% to win the division.  Reasonable enough.

2:36
Do you think the rays can sustain the pace they are on? They could sneak in and win the al east in 2019?
Tim Dierkes
2:37
At this point in time I'm more inclined to put the Rays down for a WC spot than the division crown, but it's pretty close.  The Rays can at least start to think they have a very strong playoff shot.

Marcus Semien is breaking out harder than anyone but no one is saying anything...why?
Tim Dierkes
2:39
Is there a particular commentator that you wish was talking about Marcus Semien, who isn't?  Dude's off to a nice start but he's not even top 30 in MLB in wRC+.

please get off your high horse about extention as you not know what is in the minds of the players or hardships they have maybe they don' worship the almighty dollar and hae other priorities in life
Tim Dierkes
2:41
Unless the player's priority is to lose negotiations to his employer, I think you're wrong.  I know gatorman's comment is kind of the typical knee-jerk reaction to a deal like that of Ozzie Albies, but in reality, Albies could have locked in life-changing money without sacrificing tons and tons of future earning power (see Jimenez, Eloy).
2:44
As Jeff Todd has pointed out, it's not like the Braves gave Albies a no-trade clause.  The type of deal Albies signed is almost predatory, which is weird to say when a guy gets $35MM.  The bottom line is that it's not binary.  Albies' choices were not 1) Sign a super cheap deal giving up 4 free agent seasons or 2) go year to year.
2:46
There is an in-between where the thing is not so lopsided.  And in 2019 and 2020, Albies is only getting an extra $425K compared to the MLB minimum.  If Albies needed a short-term $850K for some kind of noble cause, I wish he'd taken one of the other options available to him to get that.
Giants
2:46
We all know it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when... are any Giants trade values going up enough to fetch a top prospect? Or even get out from a bad contract  that looked impossible before (like melancon or samazidja)?
Tim Dierkes
2:48
There's a lot to like in the value MadBum has restored in just these four starts, and it's easy to picture the team extracting a top prospect for him in July.  Whereas that may not have been possible during the winter.
Seebs
2:48
So tired of people talking about $35MM like it is robbery. I will not see a fraction of that in my lifetime. Fans are delusional
Tim Dierkes
2:50
It's all relative.  If your talent was as rare as Albies', you might want to be paid fairly instead of your employer getting a huge bargain on you.
Albies Contract
2:50
I think gatorman is also neglecting the effect that this has on other players and the union as well. Owners have been aggrandizing their position at the expense of players and this is the worst case yet. Regardless of what we think about player salaries in an absolute sense, the fact is that its all relative to what ownership is and should make. I think the players deserve it more, no?
Tim Dierkes
2:51
Most MLB fans do not think this way, that the Albies deal means more profits for Liberty Media or more trade value for the team if they decide to deal him at some point.  They just think that $35 million is a lot of money, which of course it is.
2:52
When millionaires and billionaires face off, generally you'd think the public would take the side of neither (like perhaps in the 1994 strike).
Hmmmmm
2:52
How big of a year would Heyward need in order to opt out?
Tim Dierkes
2:54
He'd have to be positive he could top a four-year, $86MM deal, perhaps a bit less due to deferrals.  He will be heading into his age 30 season.  His 2016-18 was a run of over 1500 PAs of lousy hitting.
2:55
For Heyward and his agent to think that it's obviously better to hit free agency, in this climate, after three bad seasons and one good one...I'm not even sure an MVP award would convince them to opt out.
2:56
Even like a 7 WAR season with 30 HR and a .400 OBP, I STILL don't see teams lining up to give him something exceeding 4/100.
gatorman

it is not for you to determine what actions to take. you have missed the entire point that you dont know why he signed it
