I would love it if the Kimbrel signing gets announced about 1 minute before the draft officially starts, as a power move for MLB screwing him out of a job due its own ludicrous rules.
Tim Dierkes
2:23
It wouldn't be too hard to hijack attention from the MLB draft, because most fans don't know who most of the players are, and won't see them in the Majors soon.

You would pick Giles over Kimbrel???  What are you thinking??
Tim Dierkes
2:25
I'm not sure I really see the argument for a rusty Kimbrel over what Giles is doing currently.  Is there some kind of logical Kimbrel argument I'm missing?
Silly fan

Am I the only one that feels like getting a season and a half of jay bruce for 2.5 mil and a middling prospect is a steal for the Phillies ?
Tim Dierkes
2:27
Bruce is an acceptable enough bench/power guy to use against RHP, but I'm not seeing him as a difference-maker.

You're James McCann's agent: Would your client accept an extension offer for 4/22?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
Absolutely.  This is a guy who's never had a $3MM guarantee in his life.  As his agent I might consider a lifetime contract for $22MM.

Disgruntled Nationals fan here. There is a special level of frustration for following a team that gets so many of the seemingly difficult, big-picture things right but so many of the easy little things wrong. The Nats can sign Max, Corbin, etc. to huge free agent deals that actually work out, draft and develop homegrown stars like Soto, Rendon, Stras, Harper.....but they can't find a couple of decent relievers? Or not many every managerial hire into a huge drama?
Tim Dierkes
2:29
I've got no argument for that...pretty much the consensus on this team.  How do you have that much star power over the years and yet continually disappoint?
PL

Looks like your website's doing a lot of "original" posts lately. I like the approach. What's the reasoning for it?
Tim Dierkes
2:30
Steve, Jeff, and Connor have so much to offer beyond writing up the news, that I decided it made sense to block off time for them to write original posts without asking them to monitor breaking news at the same time.  I love to see what they're coming up with.

What is the 'games behind' number teams begin to sell off?
Tim Dierkes
2:31
I feel like the dividing line is usually around 7.  6 is not too crazy.  5 or less and fans might complain.
Jimbo
2:31
We need an explanation on why you would take Giles over Kimbrel.... I get that Giles is cheaper but his track record doesn't come close to Kimbrel's.
Tim Dierkes
2:34
Similar swing and miss stuff, better control, more groundballs, younger, not rusty, less expensive.  I think we are past peak Kimbrel and his dominance from 2012 or something isn't relevant now.

Is Stroman a logical target for the A’s?
Tim Dierkes
2:35
They're in the WC race, but you'd have to consider them a long shot for that last spot.  But since Stroman is under control for 2020, he's a nice target to hedge their bets if their struggles continue.  On the other hand, they could wait a month and a half and get a clearer picture of their year.

Why do I have a feeling that when all is said and done, the Giants won’t bring themselves to trade Bumgarner because doing so would end the charade if trying to compete with their “championship core.”
Tim Dierkes
2:36
I don't think Zaidi has that type of attachment to MadBum.  I think it's highly likely he is traded this summer.

Hearing anything about Kimbrel or Keuchel readiness?  How long until we see them in the majors?
Tim Dierkes
2:37
From Ken Rosenthal two days ago:
Both pitchers have been throwing regularly and are said to be in good shape. But both would require time in the minors to get into game condition, and teams are concerned about the potential impact of their layoffs on their performances. No healthy free-agent pitcher of consequence has ever gone this deep into a season before signing a contract.
2:38
Then there's this...
Opt Outs
2:38
If a premium free agent is going to require 10+ years to sign,  are GMs inclined to include player opt outs in hopes of avoiding those back years and be happy with a few years of prime play?
Tim Dierkes
2:40
Though it can and has worked out that way in the past sometimes, opt-outs are generally seen as greatly favoring the player and adding mostly downside risk to the team.  If a team includes one it should generally have to pay less money on the contract.

Can you convince Mike Rizzo that it’s time to cut losses and trade assets for prospects.  The rebuild needs to happen.
Tim Dierkes
2:42
I think the chances of the Nats winning 85 games and sneaking into the playoffs are higher than most people think, because they've been a sub-.500 team to date.  I imagine the Nats are on the more optimistic side of things and will wait as long as they can before selling.

White sox + Kimbrel AND keuchel, but no other moves: legit chance at playoffs?
Tim Dierkes
2:43
Unlike in the NL, that fifth playoff spot is pretty far out of reach for a team like the White Sox even with those additions.

Do you think we'll start to see the HOF threshold for SPs (which I assume to be about 250?) go by the wayside in the years to come, as more guys who have played the bulk of their careers in the "pitch count management" era will be up for votes?
Tim Dierkes
2:45
Absolutely.  I feel like a guy like Sabathia should not be a borderline case just because pitchers in the current era have been used differently than those in the past.

2:45
Odds of Carlos Santana getting just a single HOF vote once his career is done?  Co-workers (die-hard Indians fans) took on a bet that he would get at least 1 HOF vote, I (irrelevant but nonetheless mentioning a die-hard Reds fan) said there is absolutely no way... Thoughts/odds/which side are you on?
Tim Dierkes
2:47
That question mostly boils down to whether there is one HOF writer who does not respect the honor of voting, and will throw a vote to an old friend as a favor (as we've seen with Placido Polanco, Carlos Lee, Tim Wakefield, Garret Anderson, David Eckstein, any many others).
2:48
It's insulting to the whole process, but it's not as if there is a logical consistency to the HOF anyway.
Doug The Guest
2:48
Kimbrel over Giles in a vacuum, but I prefer Giles since he's actually been pitching in real games for two months
