Didn't Kimbrel asking for a 6 year, record breaking contract have more to do with him going unsigned than the draft pick?
Tim Dierkes
2:50
Unfortunately, so much of the info that gets out to us is false or misleading in some way.  I don't know that free agents always have an "ask" - they may have a number they want to see, but I imagine it's mostly just receiving offers and trying to decide when they've reached a point where the offers won't get any better.
So yeah, it definitely might be unrealistic asking prices for those two guys, but the only people who have perfect info are the agents, and if they went overboard in their expectations they will not leak that out.

Wait Giles over Kimbrel for 2019??? I can understand not wanting to overpay for an old Kimbrel by signing him to a 5 year contract, but Giles was bad as recently as last year.
Tim Dierkes

So was Kimbrel
Big Show
2:51
Fun fact: unless injury occurs, Kimbrel will be an elite 36 year old closer. Why is everyone acting like his career is over at 31? Why do so many pundits think that there are no elite players over 30???
Tim Dierkes

I feel like you and I have a different interpretation of what a "fact" is, Big Show.

Of all the rebuilding clubs, which has the brightest near-term future?  Is there another Houston lurking?
Tim Dierkes
2:54
I think you are right to be hopeful, because the Jays do have the brightest near-term future of the teams that currently have no shot at the 2019 playoffs.

Why aren't you putting Treinen in the traded closers list?  You think they'll hold onto him?
Tim Dierkes
2:54
I can see Treinen being dealt this summer, but the A's are within arm's reach of the playoffs and I believe the question was about who might be dealt first.
Will Madison Bumgarner get traded this summer?

Best minor league signing so far? My opinion is hunter pence for the rangers
Tim Dierkes

I think I'd go with Derek Dietrich.

If you are the Royals would you at least entertain the thought of trading Mondesi?
Tim Dierkes
2:58
If I were a GM I would entertain any and all offers coming in and would try not to close any doors.  But I imagine the Royals consider Mondesi part of their next contending team.

Will 3 American League playoff teams come from the AL East? Or will the Texas Rangers keep this up and steal WC spot?
Tim Dierkes
2:58
I do think the Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox will all make the playoffs.
Ken Giles
2:59
In defense of Kimbrel, I think you need to assess calling him "bad" last season. He did not perform at his peak, but he was an above average performer, who had some less than effective moments at the end of a season. I was a 0 WAR player. He was a 2.3.

One area where I always toss out WAR entirely is with relievers.  It's fairly wonky for pitchers in general, but especially bad when looking at 60 innings.  Not fair for me to say Kimbrel was bad last year - he was decent.  We're probably looking at a 3.00 ERA guy, definitely a nice addition for anyone.

Thanks Tim. Next time, pause for effect though. People love that.

Are you surprised to see me in the starting lineup today for Cubs and will I make a difference?
Tim Dierkes
3:04
CarGo's reputation has carried him further than it should have.  But I think he can be a  league average bat vs righties, not really any worse a hitter against them than Jason Heyward is.

Please stop answering questions about kimbrel vs Giles.  It’s officially a dead horse and is a pointless argument bc it’s based on opinions
Tim Dierkes

This entire chat is based on my opinions though.

Pretty lazy analysis on Kimbrel referencing 2012 Dierkes. Arguably his best year in 2017. You are slipping.
Tim Dierkes
3:06
Yeah, but the idea of Kimbrel being elite because his track record is elite is mostly based on 2010-15.  Over the last three, I think we've seen enough to suggest he's a 3.00 type guy (of course with the huge variance that can happen over any 30 inning stretch).

Do you know anyone personally who got drafted Tim?
Tim Dierkes

Like friends of mine, no...although I recently learned that my eye doctor's son was drafted by the Rays in 2014!  Also Eric Stout is a local guy, so some of my neighbors know him.  Does that count?
On that note, gotta conclude the chat.  Thanks for joining me!
