On Smith specifically:
If the Giants get a real auction mentality going, the ceiling is maybe a 60 prospect (Yankees getting Gleyber Torres) but I'd expect someone below that.

You meant only 1 of Ruiz, Lux, and May right, not all 3?  Also is Hand enough to get the Dodgers pen over the hump?
Tim Dierkes
2:16
I did mean one of them.  He'd give their pen a dominant element it does not currently have, but I'd probably add multiple pieces.

What big name position players can we expect to be on the move in the next month and a half?
Tim Dierkes
2:18
Anthony Rendon is possible.  We already saw Encarnacion moved.  Puig, Castellanos, Belt, Smoak, and Mancini make sense.  Starling Marte could be interesting.
Chris Taylor
2:18
Did you pay me to use my picture on your website?
Tim Dierkes
2:19
That's not Chris Taylor...it's a generic stock photo.  One time I was in Walgreens and they were selling those weird packs of baseball cards where they put together random cards from different sets in one pack, and it also had that same generic stubbled ballplayer on it.

How the hell are the Rangers doing this? That pitching staff is awful.
Tim Dierkes
2:20
Through a bunch of mashing.  But it's interesting, because even the Tanner Roarks of the world would make their staff a lot better, if they added several, so there's room to improve without giving up a ton.

I should trade Marcus Stroman et al. for which premier pitching prospect?
Tim Dierkes
2:22
I'd probably put Stroman in the same category as Trevor Bauer.  I'd prefer Bauer but the remaining control is the same.  55-grade prospects are usually toward the high end of what we see traded in July, though sometimes someone surrenders a 60.
Once in a blue moon, someone surrenders one of the ten best prospects in baseball (Cubs-Eloy Jimenez) though that was for an SP with 3.3 years of control.

What is the best trade for Clint Frazier?
Tim Dierkes
2:24
I don't think the Yankees HAVE to trade Frazier.  He's a post-hype type young player who hit MLB pitching well for 209 PAs and got squeezed out of a stacked lineup, but the Yankees can also just trade prospects who have not yet reached the Majors.

What would the cost of Madbum be?  Do I give up Medina?
Tim Dierkes
2:26
I think that's reasonable - kind of like the Yu Darvish package being led by Willie Calhoun.

What move do the cards make before the deadline?....top rotation arm seems like the most likely/need based. Your thoughts? Any specific targets make the most sense?
Tim Dierkes
2:27
I think everyone's looking at the same 15-20 available SPs.  MadBum, Bauer, Kluber all strong fits, but who knows if the latter two will be dealt.
Tyler Morris
2:27
Who is the Ryan Pressly of this trade deadline?
Tim Dierkes
2:29
How about Shane Greene?  Bit of a breakout reliever with 1.3 years of control who wasn't great in the previous year.
Brian
2:29
What is a realistic return for Bumgarner? Seems like the rumors are all over the place regarding what he will return for the Giants.
Tim Dierkes
2:30
We only have 7 rental SPs who were traded in the last two Julys, and two of those are Jaime Garcia.  MadBum matches up fairly well with Yu Darvish - above average SP, rental, possible difference-maker but perhaps not what he once was.
2:31
Darvish netted a 55 prospect, a 45, and an unranked guy.  Or maybe J.A. Happ from last  year - he got Brandon Drury (a guy with lots of control left who'd had MLB success) plus a 45 prospect.

Is there any truth to the Dodgers ‘interest’ in Brad Hand? None of the articles talking about it cite any sources
Tim Dierkes
2:32
2:33
But in a way, that's just common sense: a team with World Series aspirations and major bullpen problems is of course going to have interest in the best available relievers.  It would be weird if the Dodgers didn't go after Brad Hand, if the Indians are open to trading him.

Frazier for any of the guys you mentioned (other than MadBum) seems like a significant overpay. What comps can you site?
Tim Dierkes
2:38
I don't think there's a clear recent comp because we first have to agree on: What is Clint Frazier?  Excellent MLB prospect two years ago, with increased defensive questions since then.  Some MLB success with the bat this year, but not an extended sample.  I think the Yankees may find a wide range of opinions on him.  I guess let me know who you think the Yankees should be able to get for him and I can try to decide whether I agree.

Do you buy that DiPoto wanted to save money so badly on Encarnación that he passed on better prospects from the Rays and Astros?
Tim Dierkes
2:38
2:39
Based on Dipoto's past history (and this may be the fault of ownership), I'd say yes, I buy Feinsand's report.  I'm thinking of Dipoto attaching Cano to Diaz, when trading Diaz solo would have netted a stronger package of players but with much less financial relief.

Thanks for chatting Tim! What do you think is a realistic trade return for Matthew Boyd and Shane Greene?
Tim Dierkes
2:41
I was thinking about Boyd this morning and in my opinion, the Tigers would be justified asking for any prospect in baseball.  The precedent: when Jose Quintana had the same amount of control, the White Sox got Eloy Jimenez, one of the 8-10 best prospects in the game and a 70 grade guy, plus a solid 50 in Dylan Cease.
And Boyd is rocking a more impressive current season than Quintana was, and is making less money, though he does lack the length of Q's track record.
2:42
Point being, the Rays might not trade Wander Franco for anyone, but it wouldn't be ridiculous for the Tigers to ask.

2:42
What kind of a return could the Giants possibly get if someone were actually interest in taking Bum and Smith together?
Tim Dierkes
2:43
I think that's when the 60 grade prospects would be a justifiable ask.  Twins have a couple.
