Hmm..

Does Wheeler bring back anything interesting?
Tim Dierkes
2:57
Yes - ERA aside, I don't think he's much different from what he was last year.  Good case to be made that you'd rather have Wheeler than Bumgarner.
If the asking price was equal, who would you rather trade for?

Zack Wheeler (39% | 196 votes)

Madison Bumgarner (61% | 306 votes)

Which 5 MLB pitchers, in the last 10 years, have pitched the MOST MLB innings for the LEAST amount of money?
Tim Dierkes
2:59
Fun question, but not a great top of the head one.  Maybe like Gio Gonzalez.  I'm not sure what the criteria are - the innings leaders have all made a lot of money.

Will Renfroe or Reyes be called on for HR Derby? Seems the Padres are under represented in all star game
Tim Dierkes

I'd love to see Ohtani and Vogelbach get the last two Derby slots, though I think Renfroe/Reyes are great picks as well.  As far as more Padres love for Cleveland, I'm hoping Tatis finds his way onto the roster.

When will MLB recognize that the Wilpons are a huge liability to the sport and force their sale? This is an ownership group that should never have been allowed to continue on in their large market when their spending ability was wiped away after Madoff. Having a New York team always act like a small market team is not good for the sport and the other teams.
Tim Dierkes

I don't think it's nearly bad enough for MLB to step in.  The team would probably have to be going bankrupt, not just acting kind of mid-market.

Everyone seemed to bail on Heyward when he slumped. His last month has been outstanding. He's only 29. Has he turned it around/figured it out? It seems like every year he was expected to be someone different than the year before. COuld it be as simple as leaving him alone and letting him be who he is?
Tim Dierkes
3:03
I think people bailed on Heyward because he was a below-average hitter for the Cubs for three years after they signed him.  I could see a 116 wRC+ holding up, but none of us really have any idea whether it will.

Even with only 200 plate appearances Tatis Jr. is at 2.7 fwar. Do you think he deserved to be on the all star team?
Tim Dierkes
3:05
Yes - though picking the All-Star team is a Frankenstein's monster and also a bit more art than science.  Sometimes you want the big first half guys, other times you want a longstanding star who maybe doesn't have the numbers this year, and other times you want the game's future stars.
But you can't go wrong with Tatis on that roster.  They seem overstocked with pitching, probably for fear of another tie or whatever.

If you dangle Royce Lewis, you’re fired.

RE: Tatis, Jr. SS in the NL is LOADED. He's great, but so is Baez, Story, DeJong, etc.
Tim Dierkes
3:08
Yeah, the NL roster doesn't have obvious mistakes like the AL.  Probably could have gotten away with Tatis instead of David Dahl or someone though.

I understand the players voting in Lindor, but David Dahl? What?
Tim Dierkes
3:09
Dahl's not the players' biggest mistake...that goes to Jose Abreu.

Speaking of the HR derby. Do you think players feel odd being in the HR derby, when they did not make the All-Star team? I'm sure they have fun either way, just curious if guy that made the team and didn't get invited to the HR derby (that could do it) feel annoyed by that.
Tim Dierkes
3:11
I doubt it - only eight players are chosen, and even if some of the game's stars decline, there are way more than eight who would love to participate (even before the cash prizes got much bigger).  I imagine a guy like Kyle Schwarber who was there last year was happy to be participating in such a fun event.

Biggest allstar snub? Voit!!!
Tim Dierkes
3:12
Voit > Abreu, sure, but Xander Bogaerts, Lance Lynn, Marcus Semien, Max Muncy, Max Kepler, and Chris Sale are bigger snubs.
AA=Arn Anderson
3:12
Braves need a Frontline starter could AA go after either Sale Scherzer or anyone who locked longer then 1year
Tim Dierkes
3:13
Well, the reason we talk about Boyd and Stroman so much is that they have a reasonable chance of being traded (esp Stroman).  I don't see Sale or Scherzer being dealt, and especially not Scherzer to the Braves.  I would bring the expectations down - Keuchel was a big addition.

Between 130MM for goldy and 76MM for Mikolas, which ll turn out better?
Tim Dierkes
3:15
A couple of aggressive extensions by the Cardinals...I have more hope for Mikolas earning his contract.  But I'm just a huge fan of the Lizard King.

Is it about time to make the ASG Youth vs. Veterans?  Or would the Veterans be afraid to do that?
Tim Dierkes
3:16
I love the idea in theory, though around the age cut-off there would be weirdness.  Mike Trout is 27, which does he play for?  Plus I don't know that there's any one voting entity that we can trust to make strong decisions.
Danimal
3:16
Yes/No do you see Goldy recovering from his horrid start and getting anywhere near career averages/norms?
Tim Dierkes
3:17
I'd expect like a 120-125 wRC+ moving forward in the near future.  That's light of career norms but a reasonable expectation from a guy who will be 32 in a couple months.  He's not toast or anything though.

Speaking of Wheeler, don't the big fastball and reasonable contract situation make him the perfect target for Houston??
Tim Dierkes
3:18
I imagine the Astros would be plenty intrigued by Wheeler.

Do the Cubs have a chance of salvaging the season? It just seems like they have too many holes.
Tim Dierkes
3:19
They're tied for first place, so it's not like this year has been a total bust.  I think we're just seeing the typical ups and downs of a 162-game season.

Most likely 2019-20 free agent to sign an extension?

I'll go with Jose Abreu.

What was the first MLB trade that really sticks out in your mind? Kevin Tapani to the Dodgers is the one for me
Tim Dierkes
3:21
One I remember clearly happened 8-8-97: Cubs got Lance Johnson, Mark Clark, and Manny Alexander from the Mets for Brian McRae, Mel Rojas, and Turk Wendell.  I found out several days afterward by reading a newspaper.  I was 15.
