Hi James,

We appreciate it may be difficult to gain chemistry related work experience during lockdown, however there are plenty of online resources available to help you make the most of this time.

Do you have any online work experience links for Chemistry?
Eliza
4:08
Hi Sara,

Great question. I think a combination of academic study and taking the time to develop new skills is best, especially if those skills link to a course you may want to do in the future. Ella and I have made a free online webinar on this exact topic! Click 'Making the Most of Lockdown' on the link below for our tips and advice:

Hi, do you think it is more valuable to spend time focusing on chosen A levels, having just left year 11, or focusing on developing new skills during lockdown?

Hi Ron,

Honestly, we just don't know yet. Some Universities like Manchester and Oxford have said their first term will all be taught online. However other Universities including Leeds have not yet reported what they will be doing. Rest assured Universities are working really hard to try and resolve this and work out what teaching will be like. Keep an eye on your emails and this website as it will be updated on here as soon as we know more: https://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/116000/undergraduate/802/coronavirus-info...

After the lockdown, will the university continue to teach by online learning?
Eliza

Hi Darshana,

I think the best thing to do is contact the Physics departments at the universities you are considering applying to, and ask if you could send a separate, additional personal statement for their specific course.

Thanks,

Eliza

Can I put down Physics as my fifth option when applying to medicine, or does it have to be a medicine adjacent subject? If it's the latter, which course would you recommend?

Hi Sierra,

Lockdown will certainly be taken into account as Universities know how tough it will be to gain work experience. However there is still lots of opportunities that you could look into for medicine.

•The Royal College of General Practitioners will launch their Observe GP online work experience scheme at the end of April. https://www.rcgp.org.uk/training-exams/discover-general-practice/obser...

• Brighton and Sussex Medical School have recently launched a virtual work experience scheme. https://bsmsoutreach.thinkific.com/courses/VWE

• The Medical Schools Council have an online resource which details activities students may wish to take part in for work experience. https://www.medschools.ac.uk/media/2331/relevant-experience-for-applyi...

• For further queries, our School of Medicine has recently published an FAQ page for applicants which we hope your students will find of use.  https://medicinehealth.leeds.ac.uk/medicine-undergraduate/doc/coronavi...

As our work experience has been cancelled, will this still be a requirement for courses such as medicine? thankyou
Ella
3:48
Hi Ron,

Universities understand how hard it will be to gain work experience so yes this will be taken into account.

However, there are still lots of things you can do to make the most of your lock down experience - take a look at this free webinar here where we talk about how to gain some work experience and boost your CV even during Covid 19: https://register.gotowebinar.com/recording/6170170490243232769?assets=...

Are there any resources that you would recommend to revise for the UCAT and BMAT exams for Medicine?

Hi Sahar,

It is always a good idea to try and get ahead with your studies. For medicine you can take a look at the programme catalogue which details all of the classes you might take at Leeds and any links to helpful reading: http://webprod3.leeds.ac.uk/catalogue/dynmodules.asp?Y=201920&F=P&M=ME...

Also take a look at our online webinars which are free and have lots of helpful resources on they are here: https://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130580/supporting_students/810/online_pre...

You can also sign up for free courses in subjects such as 'anatomy' here: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130580/supporting_students/816/health_scie...

Good luck.

Hi I was wondering if you recommend learning some basic content for the course I want to study (medicine) which isn't taught in the a level specification

Hi Sierra.

The best thing to do is check the 'Coronavirus - information for applicants and offer holders' website regularly. This has the most up to date information.

Eliza
3:21
Hi Ron, thanks for your question.

The Medicine degree at The University of Leeds involves lots of different teaching methods, one of those being lectures. Typically, Medicine students are in University or 9-5 Monday to Friday studying, although placements and exact contact hours vary greatly depending on chosen modules and year of study. This website lists the modules a student could study on this course in much more detail : http://webprod3.leeds.ac.uk/catalogue/dynmodules.asp?Y=201920&F=P&M=ME...
Ron C
3:13
On average, how many lectures are there a week for those studying medicine?
Ella
3:13
Hi Chloe,

Universities will absolutely take into account covid-19 when it comes to making offers. Universities wont just look at your predicted grades but instead will take a holistic approach. They will look at your personal statement, your academic reference, any work experience, your school data and your local community data too. You will all be in exactly the same position so all students will be treated fairly and equally. When you do go to University you may also receive extra teaching and training to make up for any teaching time missed due to the lockdown.

We have some really great resources for students  including webinars, free online courses and FAQs - here are some useful links for you:

Free webinars - https://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130580/supporting_students/810/online_pre...

What are Universities going to do to help out the Undergrads of 2021, knowing that we have missed out on so much school work and teaching from staff over the past few months and possibly longer? Will the entry requirements be lowered?

Hi

Hi Iman, thanks for your question. Myself and Ella are both staff at the University, and we work in Educational Engagement.

However we did both go to Leeds University! I have a degree in English Literature and Ella has a degree in Philosophy. We are more than happy to answer anything about what it was like to be a student here :)

Hi Eliza and Ella, what course are you doing at the Uni of Leeds.
Eliza
3:04
Hi James, thanks for your question. Yes, in terms of a year in industry you do not have to decide that now. You would apply to do the placement year at the beginning of your Chemistry degree in year two.

Yes, it is a very flexible program. Although you apply for either the 3 or 4 year version of the course, on the Bsc wesbite it says 'This programme can also be studied over four years to achieve an MChem, BSc integrated Masters degree' , link below: https://courses.leeds.ac.uk/3220/chemistry-bsc#section5

Furthermore, on the MChem website it says 'This course can be studied as a four-year MChem, BSc integrated Masters degree, or a three-year BSc.' link here: https://courses.leeds.ac.uk/f422/chemistry-mchem-bsc

I hope that helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Thanks, Eliza

In my first year if I changed my mind about the course and wanted to do an industry year or if I was doing a BSc chemistry course could I change to Mchem?
