Hey all, Happy Monday Chatday! Real games this week, more real news to come (much of it negative injury related, unfortunately—but that's the deadl), and you all brought the questions. Will get to as many as I can in the next hour or so.
12:02
First a quick plug: I'm hosting a "Brent Brent" league over at the NFBC website; 12-team mixed, Online Championship format. One of their overall prize contests, but winnings for the league as well. Plus, anyone that finishes ahead of me in the standings receives a copy of both of our 2025 books for free! Doing it this Wednesday at noonET, sign-up info here. Hope to see you in the draft room!
OK, let's get to it ...

Hey!  How many dingers for Duvall this year?  Rosterable in daily moves leagues?
Brent Hershey
12:05
We have him in the 15 or so range; and that's in limited playing time; planning on some platoon AB w/ Kelenic. I think it COULD be something to seriously consider in a daily moves league; right now I'd be skeptical in other formats. Of course with an injury or two in that ATL lineup, and his ABs go up (assuming HE can stay out of the trainers' room), there's some HR upside there, too.

Please talk me off the ledge about Eury Perez.  Trying to stay optimistic, but when does a young power pitcher have elbow soreness and it turns out to be ok?  Seems like almost never.  Talk some sense into me...PLEASE
Brent Hershey
12:06
Wish I could. Pitchers break ... it's just how it is. Assuming you have him rostered; all you can do is just wait like the rest of us. For those still to draft, a serious downgrade IMO.

Brent, Had my fantasy draft last night (5x5 OBP League) and realized I have a problem. Currently my OF is Nolan Jones, Jordan Walker, Michael Harris with Jarren Duran as a Utility and Henry Davis as a back-up OF and C.  My problem is I can't seem to let Kelenic go, who is currently on my bench, and keep thinking he will put it together.  Is it time to walk away? I'm lacking backup for Gelof at 2b and Jung at 3b. Currently available are Westburg, Brandon Lowe, Jeff McNeil or even a Tyler Black (if he gets called up soon).  If it's time to walk away could you rank those players in terms of preference?
Brent Hershey
12:11
Westburg is the only one of those listed that I'd consider over Kelenic. With the trade, I had talked myself into thinking  Kelenic could still turn it around, so I feel ya. If possible, I would still wait until Opening Day or so before I cut bait. If he actually IS only playing against RHP, then I'd consider a cut. But could be the Duvall signing/announcement has some noise to it, as well. But back to your Q, Lowe/McNeil/Black aren't better options for me right now.

12:12
In a holds league would you choose Ian Hamilton, Scott Barlow, Matt Moore, Jason Foley or Brock Stewart?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Barlow or Stewart based on team strength unless possible saves matter -- then I MIGHT consider Foley. But I'd probably go Stewart given his filthy numbers and relatively good team context.
Bob
12:14
Do you think a starting rotation of Logan Gilbert, Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, Bryan Woo, Aaron Civale, Yusei Kikuchi and Seth Lugo can be competitive in a 14 team league?
Brent Hershey
12:14
Yes, though it's a bit older pitchers than I'd like. Would be smartly searching for a Lugo upgrade, methinks.

Hi Brent! NL 10 team 5x5 Auction coming up. As I've posted on the forum, I think I can get T Turner, O Cruz & I have EDC. If I freeze A Riley at $35, I don't think I can get Turner.
Would you rather the 3 I mentioned (and target Burger?) Or keep riley and let T Turner go this year?
Brent Hershey
12:17
I'd rather keep those three (should be a huge SB base) and target Burger. Though you'll want to also be mindful of not getting yourself in a BA hole too. All depends on what else you're keeping. But power/speed/counting stats should be nicely set up.

If the BBHQ top 100 was based on OBP where would Justin-Henry-Malloy and Roderick Arias rank?
Brent Hershey
12:20
Not sure that even with OBP, Malloy breaks into the HQ100 — maybe in the 85-100 range. Arias probably gets into the top 50, but be careful of putting too much stock into rookie-level BB% rates; pitching is often control-challenged. But still, some insane raw talent there overall from Arias.

Will Cole pitch this season?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Yes, but at a reduced effectiveness. (Like anyone answering this question; it's a total stab)

12:23
Brent, thanks 4x4 al only keeper..cowser vs stowser long term and how concernedare you on stephenson
Brent Hershey
12:23
Cowser for sure. Stowers, if this continues, more of a short-term play (who could be helpful).
Stephenson - yes, latest news not so good for me. No big Estevez fan, but I'm not counting on many saves from Stephenson at this point.

Is it time to give up on E. Cabrera?
Brent Hershey
12:27
All depends on league context. Type of talent who gets held in deep keepers/dynasty leagues hoping that he figures it out someday ... but if you're in a redraft or shallower format, then the answer is a resounded "yes".

hiya, brent! quick question for you regarding end-game rp in my dynasty h2h league, where the SV category will become SV + H (1/2 point) next season.

how would you rank nardi, bender, megill (mil), seranthony, and berroa?

thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:30
Seranthony, Berroa, Nardi, Megill, Bender. Trying to balance good team, how likely they remain with team, proximity to saves, etc.

FWIW, I do think that Megill is not getting talked about enough for the MIL job.. but it's still so up in the air

Morning folks!!! Thoughts on Kopech as the closer option for the Whitesox this year??
Brent Hershey
12:32
From back in his prospect days, scouts long have said they expect him to end up in the bullpen. Stuff + mentality seem to fit the role. Team doesn't have a locked-in saves option. Lotsa positive boxes. I'm in on Kopech for a late flyer.

12:33
Please rank these guys for OBP - Cole Young, Sebastian Walcott, Colt Emerson, Roderick Arias, Kyle Teel, Lazaro Montes, Justin Henry Malloy
Brent Hershey
12:33
Assuming a keeper/dynasty situation: Arias, Young, Teel, Walcott, Emerson, Montes, Malloy. Trying to weigh overall talent level w/ their plate patience.

W hat is Jackson Merrill's upside for 2024? Is he worth adding in 12 team mixed leagues?
Brent Hershey
12:37
Like the maturity and overall game. Don't think he'll "WOW" in his first year, but he'll be fine overall. That said, his Upside (NOT a projection, mind you) would look something like .260 BA / 18 HR / 15 SB / 140 Runs + RBI

I do think he's worth adding in 12s, but don't get too attached. The failure/struggle rate for rooks w/ no MLB experience is high, and you'll have better options on the waiver wire if he struggles hard initially.

12:39
Is Jared Jones the real deal? And is it possible that he starts out on the major league roster?
Brent Hershey
12:39
Yes ... and yes. Though remember that second part — that it's POSSIBLE, though I wouldn't call it LIKELY just yet. BHQ subscribers can read a bit about the situation in an article today.

Welcome back, BRENT! I hope all is well with you.

We all have players we can't quite let go of, and for me, that guy is Jack Flaherty. His last ST start was spectacular and DET seems to be turning into a bit of a pitching lab. Are you in? I'm thinking of taking him late over guys like Detmers, Olson, Paxton, etc.
Brent Hershey
12:43
Thanks, Jud ... you as well.

Not sure I'm "in", but on the other hand if you've got a good mix of stability and upside on your staff already, JF is an OK shot to take late. He's of course not someone I'm building around/targeting, but will consider late among other options. As I'm sure you know, has the stuff, but consistency has always been a problem. Remember that the awesome outings like his last ST appearance are part of the whole package. That said -- you're right that DET has some interesting pitchers -- though let's have more than just Skubal have MLB success before we tab it as a destination "lab".
Specifically, I'd only take him over Paxton of the trio you list.

12 team mixed H2H categories league; are Joe Boyle, DL Hall, and Luis Gil viable late round SPs?
Brent Hershey
12:45
Probably not, right now. Hall is the closest if he makes the rotation. But in general you should have better options on the wire I'd think.

Is Ketel Marte being under drafted in redraft leagues?
Brent Hershey
12:46
A bit; yes. Though realize that staying on the field has been a challenge, even though he did that last year. But solid all-around skillset on a surprisingly good team all of a sudden.

More likely to pitch 180 innings this year - Chris Sale or Grayson Rodriguez?
