More worried about his shoulder(s) health than positional grumblings. If still bothering him, that (injury) is not as easily fixed as winning takes care of the 2B/3B thing.

hi Brent, thank you for taking my question. Could you. comment on the prospect for Sugano for 2025? How does he compare to other Asian imports for the last few years?
Brent Hershey
12:30
More of mid-rotation (or maybe even back-end) guy than other hyped imports. BUT ... has thrown strikes in his past, so ratios have a bit less of blowup potential. Might be a sneaky value, in the right team build, where he is going.

In my 10 team AL-only Scoresheet league, I was offered Bleday in exchange for Ober.  If I trade Ober it would leave me with a rotation of Crochet, Castillo, Gray, Arrighetti, and Soriano (with Bassitt and Burke in reserve).  My outfield would end up with Bleday, Varsho, and Abreu vs RHP and Ward, Varsho, Adell vs LHP.

Bleday, being a 2.13, gives my defense a nice boost.  His OPS vs RHP is 765 after adjusting for the platoon split.

What do you think, Brent?  My bullpen is very deep.  I'm inclined to pull the trigger.
Brent Hershey
12:35
I would not ... Ober is more valuable than that for me. Ratios keep guys off base, and with Castillo/Gray's injury and age concerns, I'd advise keeping the younger Ober. Hear ya on his D, but that split is still not outstanding. I'm not in your league obviously, but would seem that Ober should fetch a non-platoon level OF if you feel like you have to move him. Would much rather trade Soriano or Burke (younger guys who have upside but not Ober's track record) for someone like Bleday.

If Kim (dodgers) was available in a minor league draft would you take him over Sproat, Thomas White or Augustin Ramirez?
Brent Hershey
12:38
I don't think I would. Both of the pitchers have really interesting qualities (White the higher ceiling) and Ramirez has BA/power profile who at least has a shot at staying at catcher. Kim strikes me as more of an on-base, bit of speed guy — just not the level of impact of the other three. And the fact that his swing 'wasn't ready' isn't helping, either.

Do you think the new contract signed by Justin Martinez is sign that he's number 1 closer for Diamondbacks?
Brent Hershey
12:39
Not right now, no. Long-term? Probably. Good arm and all who might end up leading that team in saves, but it won't solely be b/c of the contract.

Chances of R Hassell III getting a shot in DC this year?
Brent Hershey
12:40
As long as Wood/Young/Crews stay healthy, it's slim. Had a great spring, but still questions on whether he's strong enough to hit MLB pitching.

Is Max Meyer really back to his prospect status?
Brent Hershey
12:41
Yes, and armed with a new pitch, which helps. Always rookie caveats, but I'm interested, even with the surrounding cast.

Good afternoon, Brent.  In a 5x5 league scoring OBP, what 2B do you like most.  Don't care about SB.  Is this the right order?  Massey > Massey > Lux  >> Mead?
Brent Hershey
12:42
I think so ... until/unless we see evidence of Mead getting an everyday job. Which is always tough sledding in Tampa.

Will there be any more updates to DeCaria's draft level analysis?
Brent Hershey
12:43
Not 100%, but I THINK we may have another update the beginning of this week. Such a valuable tool.

20 team mixed league, more or less standard scoring. 26 active players, no reserves, and humongously large minor roster. I've been offer Victor Scott and Burkholder (Minor) for Max Mayer, SS BOS (minor). I've refused but am considering asking for Cooper Pratt, SS MIL (minor) instead of Burkholder. Thoughts? My inclination is to hold onto Mayer, though Scott would allow me to dump Brennan.
Brent Hershey
12:47
I'd actually more strongly consider it ... getting an MLB-ready (as far as we can tell) player with a huge category potential (SB) in Scott for a prospect who has been injured a lot and faces heavy traffic in breaking into the MLB roster. Frankly, I think I'd do Scott for Mayer straight-up in most cases, so the fact that the other team is willing to throw in Burkholder is a plus. Nothing wrong in asking for Pratt though, and taking Burkholder if they refuse.

Hi Brent! When a guy is on a 1-year deal, like K Tucker on the Cubs, is he trying to play his best to extend his contract with his team or to show his skills so every team can make a play for him?
In short, is Tucker just a one-year Cubbie?
Brent Hershey
12:52
Overrated angle, IMO. These are elite level athletes who "try their best" more than we realize. (Well, other than the rare exception ahemRendonahem.) Now, does this final-year pressure affect some players differently than others? And do they know they are in their final year? No doubt on both.

I've got no additional insight on Tucker ... Cubs gave up a lot for him, so would make sense that they make a big push. But ... players also know they have a limited # of times in their career where they can be the subject of a bidding war. Which means, $$$$$ in the right case. These are just the facts.

12-team NL only, dynasty format. Roster cutdown today @ 2:00. Sophie's choice --.50 AJSS in year three of his contract or .70 Birdsong in year 2. I have Alcantara and Woodruff and Holmes (.20) for SP going in. I can extend AJSS and hope he's a solid #4 by next year.
Brent Hershey
12:54
Would probably just let AJSS play out at .50. Better MLB team context, but still has to prove it at MLB level. Same for Birdsong ... but he's more expensive and feels like less experience.

12-team AL-only Traditional 5X5 $260 keeper - We had an interesting thing happen with our keeper submissions on Friday.  One team kept three (3) established closers.  I, like the majority of teams in the League, do not own a closer.  Draft strategy question:  do I overpay for one of the remaining closers (Williams, Clase or Hoffman) or do I try to piece it together with the best skilled arms in unsettled situations (DET, TEX, CWS) and hope for the best?
Brent Hershey
12:55
The latter for me. Overpaying for a top guy is probably playing into the hands of Mr 3CL. Be competitive in your bids, but set your limits and stick to em. And be ready by knowing who your DET, TEX, CHW targets are if you need to pivot. Good luck!

AL-only. SB not used so ignore their impact - think OPS only. Devers or Brent Rooker? Trout is an option but I am too worried about his "F" health score for my 1st overall pick. I assume the better other players will be gone.
Brent Hershey
12:56
Rooker, b/c I trust his health over Devers.

Will Quero be forgotten in CHW with Teel or how do you see that situation taking shape in the future?
Brent Hershey
12:58
Not forgotten, but does seem like Teel has a slight advantage right now. But seems like could go either way. This year big for each.

does trading Freeman clear the path for Brito (and eventually Bazana) or are there still too many cooks in the kitchen in Cleveland?
Brent Hershey
1:00
Bazzana is the long-term answer here for sure ... but you don't exactly know when that will be. Could be August ... could be next May. Short-term, seems like if they wanted Brito, they would have kept him up over Arias. That one is still murky to me.

*Sigh* who do you like for most value this year in the CHW infield?
Brent Hershey

Vaughn, then Vargas. Of the MIF, Meidroth is interesting.

Happy Monday Brent. Almost time for some real baseball! What are the chances that Drake Baldwin has an impact now and sticks for Atlanta? How would you rank him if you were drafting today? Thank you!
Brent Hershey

Late c2 dart. On the surface, seems that he's ready ... but catching in MLB is hard; so many things to process. Bat can take longer.

Isn't Smith Shawver an upgrade over Ian Anderson now?  and upon Striders return, do you predict Shawver to be doing better than GHolmes?
Brent Hershey
1:03
Yes to AJ SS > Anderson; think I still like Holmes a bit better to stick when Strider gets back but ... things change in an instant (injuries, early performances, etc)
Brent Hershey

Alright crew, need to run. Got to many of your Qs. Enjoy Opening Day; Ray will be back on Friday, and I'm here to help overreact next Monday! See ya!
