Any bad contract trade we could swing with the M’s for White?
Mark P
5:56
Moustakas and Votto are the only real big contracts Cincinnati has left.  Votto isn't going anywhere, and there's already a Mariner Moose Moustakas isn't really a fit since you'd think the M's would want a better DH option

Is a Gleybor Torres for Marco Gonzalez swap unrealistic for the M's?
Mark P
5:57
I think it'd be more unrealistic on the Yankees' end
Slamtana
5:58
On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely do you think it is that Santana returns to the team next season?
Mark P
5:58
Pretty low, maybe a 2.5 at most?  I'd think Seattle would want a more productive bat
Alvin Davis
5:59
Do the Mariners have any interest in Masataka Yoshida if he is posted?
Mark P
5:59
I would imagine so, his numbers are pretty interesting.
Just wondering

Why didn’t you send a link for questions earlier?
Mark P

The day was so busy with news (contract options being declined or exercised, players opting out, etc.) that I wasn't sure when I'd actually have time to launch a chat.  I also wanted to wait a bit later in the day for a chat about a West Coast team, since starting at 9am ET seemed like a bad idea.

Can we get Michael Busch from the Dodgers since he's logjammed
Mark P
6:01
If neither of the Turners return to LA next year, Busch might suddenly find himself getting a long look at Dodger Stadium

Who is your favorite mariner of all time?
Mark P
6:02
Not the most original picks in the world, but Griffey or Ichiro.

Always a lot of time for Johnny O, a Blue Jays legend
Brandon Lowe
6:03
I’d look pretty good in teal wouldn’t I?
Mark P
6:04
I wouldn't expect Brandon Lowe to be dealt to the San Jose Sharks, but hey, the Rays are a creative team.

Could the M's look for Catcher depth? Tom Murphy's health and bat continue to be inconsistent. Catcher/DH option?
Mark P
6:04
Raleigh's good season eases some concern over the catcher position.  Rather than look for more depth, they might just keep both Murphy and Torrens and see what happens

How appealing are the M's as a free agent destination right now? In past years, the org had to significantly overpay for players like Cano. Is that still the case?
Mark P
6:06
The Mariners have a good core of talent led by Julio Rodriguez, who might be within a couple of years of being the best player in baseball.  They made the playoffs and gave the Astros all they could handle.

If I'm a free agent looking to win, the idea of signing with the M's would have a lot of appeal

What happens to Evan white?
Mark P
6:08
Get him back onto the field and healthy, and let White showcase himself at Triple-A.  That'd be the only way to drum up legit trade interest, since White's value is near rock bottom right now

Chris flexen and a prospect for rhys Hoskins. Who says no
Guest
6:10
What would it take from the Phillies end to have a shot at Flexen?
Mark P
6:13
This would be an interesting swap for both sides.  Hoskins has more value than Flexen, whose advanced metrics are shaky enough over two season that I'm not sure many teams see him as anything more than a back-of-the-rotation guy.  If I'm the Phillies and might need as much as a #3 starter depending on how confident I am in Ranger Suarez, I'm not sure I'm rolling the dice on Flexen.  At least not for the cost of Rhys Hoskins.

That additional prospect might have to be someone notable to make this deal work for Philly's side

What do we give up to get Teo Hernandez?
Mark P
6:15
The Jays are another tricky trade partner, as another fellow wild card contender.  Toronto also needs pitching, and in a more clear way than Philly does I feel, but the Jays would also want more than a Gonzales/Flexen type

What does a deal for Happ or Gavin Lux look like?
Mark P
6:17
If the Dodgers are losing Trea Turner (and maybe Justin Turner), I'm hard-pressed to see them move Lux.

Happ maybe as well could be tricky if the Cubs do plan on contending this season.

I can't help but relate Kelenic to Ackley....  What is your breaking point with Kelenic?  If he does start the season, how many AB's do you give him below the mendoza line?
Mark P
6:20
Kelenic has played basically the equivalent of one entire MLB season.  So it's too early to write him off, but if he's not producing by mid-May, it'd be time for another trip to Triple-A.

That's the difficulty now that the M's are clearly planning to win in 2023.  It's not like they've given up on Kelenic by any means, he's too valuable of a prospect.  But, a contender can't really afford to waste too many at-bats on a player if they aren't getting it done
What Lewis, Trammell, and Winker are also doing plays a factor as well.  If any of those guys are hitting, it'll be easier to sit or demote Kelenic

Should the Mariners try to pry Ohtani from the Angels?
Mark P
6:21
I have a hard time believing that the Angels will move Ohtani at all, let alone to an AL West rival
JB
6:23
Matt Brash and Trammel for Lourdes Gurriel Jr?
Mark P
6:23
Gurriel is only under contract for 2023, so that offer probably doesn't work from Seattle's end.
